Living Car Free
^That sounds absolutely heavenly. Working in Blue Ash (and happily so), I'm not able to dump my car, and my family in Cleveland and my in-laws in Columbus, we travel way too much to dump it anyway (unless we get the 3C rail going!) - but wow, I envy that lifestyle...may I ask why you stopped? Oh, I see your location is Ft. Benning - did you move there in July 2003?

Question about Cincinnati neighboorhoods/tour of living
Depending on your interest in improving a home or just living in it, I wouldn't rule out Madisonville either. Small homes, great starter home kind of place, in a neighborhood some folks are frightened of because of the name, but that's smack between Oakley, Mariemont, Indian Hill/Madiera, Kennedy Heights... For handy tennis courts, the Cincinnati Tennis Club is right at the East Walnut Hills/Evanston border - you could walk there from a lot of very affordable homes in Evanston (personally, I love that section of residential Evanston bordered by Fairfax/Evanston/Duck Creek/Woodburn - very neighborhoody feel to it, nice kept lawns, single family places, nice housing stock) or from $500K+ homes in East Walnut Hills. There are also public tennis courts on Paxton in Oakley, with tons of homes all around nearby. Definitely more pricey area, but if you can afford it, it'll certainly be a good investment... I'd also commend my neighborhood, Walnut Hills, to anyone and everyone! Diverse, convenient, great housing stock, the crown jewel of the park system (Eden Park), affordable homes - we've got everything! Really, I don't think you can go wrong in Cincinnati - it's just a question of matching your preferences to what's available. I'd highly recommend taking Cincy-Rise up on his offer - he'll definitely be able to show you everything you're interested in and answer all your questions!

Living Car Free
Oompa, I'm sure others know Cleveland's public transit better than I do, but I did spend two years riding it fairly often... The schedules only list major stops and estimates of when the busses will be there. Keep in mind that those estimates are just that - they may be early (especially during low ridership times) or late. But there are always a load of stops between those major ones. Your technique of "walking until you find one" is correct. Since the printed schedules come with a map, that's really pretty easy to do - and, by the way, one can always call the RTA and have someone help plan your trip over the phone. Be sure to pay attention to the signs by the stops - in some denser areas (like Euclid Avenue) they'll have two or three stops on the same block, just to spread out the riders waiting. Now, if there are two or three busses which may all serve your needs, I believe they put them all together (say the 9X, 6 and 6A to go from downtown to CWRU) - but pay attention to what stops where. As for stripped-down routes, I don't believe they do that, but if they do, it should be very clearly indicated on the schedule. Generally a route is a route, and they look for riders to pick up at every listed stop. If nobody's there, they'll blow through, but if you're waiting at a stop, they'll pick you up. You may find that if you offer to pay for gas, and make it an inflated offer, that your castmates may be thrilled to help out - like, if it's a $10 cab ride (I have no idea what it would be, by the way), and you offered a castmate $5 to take you home, you'd both make out on the deal. One thing to keep in mind - it didn't happen very often, but there were times when an entire run was completely missed. The worst was trying to get home on a weekend, when the 17X (I believe) would run every 50 minutes, and for some reason one of the runs got skipped. I learned patience commuting from Summit County to CWRU by bus for a semester, I'll say that! On longer trips, don't assume that a route that took you one place in the evening will bring you home in the morning - I learned that visiting a friend at BW one time - took the rapid to Brook Park, then some bus from there to BW - but by the time I got up and took off in the morning, I'd missed the morning rush hour runs, and was stuck! Anyway, please keep a cell phone and cab fare handy...between driver error and user error, something will end up going wrong - being able to handle that is far superior to being unable to handle it!

Cleveland! What NFL game would you watch?
From http://www.gribblenation.net/nflmaps/ How come these tiny specks in Nebraska are getting a different game? One of two reasons: Sometimes a popular player is from a certain area, so the local station there likes to show as many games of his team as possible. This is especially true in college towns. The other reason has to do with the Fox network. Since it's a newer, smaller network, it doesn't have as many affiliates as CBS, ABC or NBC. So there is a national satellite feed called FoxNet that is distributed to cable companies in the smallest markets and other remote areas, which usually carries Fox's national game. I've tried to show as many areas that carry FoxNet as I can on the maps.

ACBJ: Browns #1 in fan loyalty, Bengals #20
MrNYC, you're saying that Bengals fans are happily sated because they lost two superbowls. That's what you've got for me. Wow. Well, I think this is officially fruitless...how about we just agree on hoping the Browns and Bengals both become the great teams their fans deserve!

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Kauffman Brewery
The area north of the Central Business District - basically, the triangle outlined by Central Parkway to the south, then Central Parkway to the west, then McMicken/Mulberry to the northeast, then Liberty to the north... It got its name from the German immigrants from oh, what, the mid-1800's sometime, so I'm sure the name predates you! Here's a cool map that shows its various internal neighborhoods...maybe some of those names will jog a memory? http://www.irhine.com/index.jsp?page=map_intro

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
^I was appalled at that shot...then on one of the replay angles, it seems like he was pushed into the QB while in the air - like, without that elbow, he'd have sailed over his head...but then, I read Geathers saying he didn't see the QB was going into his slide - and I've gotta call BS on that, because if you didn't see it, that means you weren't looking, and you've just plain gotta be looking for that...

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Uncle Rando, I'm mostly with you, except for this part: OSU is currently the top-ranked team in the entire nation, in a sport that commands the abject adoration of tens of millions of fans across the country. This year, they truly are "sooooo great" - I mean, nobody is better than them, and tons of people are trying to be. Definitely a big deal. Plus there isn't any in-state competition for them - makes it really easy to cheer them on, even if the Buckeyes aren't really your thing...

Cincy Parks Vol. 2: Ault Park
^My wife and I were married in Alms park in 2002, and the company that books the parks (I forget their name now...Historic Properties or something like that?) - they'd switched software, and somehow didn't transfer our reservation over to the new system. So in maybe February or something we got a call from them asking if we wanted to use a different park...the other couple who had booked months after us was threatening to sue, etc., etc...we ended up moving the wedding back one week, staying at Alms, and they gave us the park nearly for free...so hey, see if you can get them to double-book your date...I know at Ault park, that could save you a ton of money! Oh, and premature congratulations, by the way!

ACBJ: Browns #1 in fan loyalty, Bengals #20
and I believe Browns fans are definitely the best fans there are. But saying they've been more frustrated than Cincinnati fans? That's just crazy. BTW, that statement only extends as far as the football field...obviously, Modell moving the team is just utterly beyond all comprehension...
