...I'm not sure I'd describe being in a plane crash lucky, but definitely, very happy it worked out well for you guys...Jesus, I'd have crapped myself...
  2. The appraisals from 2002 were generally in the $80K-$100K range. I'm not going to say the street looked like a stretch of Observatory or something, but they were perfectly nice looking Norwood-type homes. I was just saying that the current state of them isn't representative of how they were kept when folks could still live in them, that's all...just objecting to "That's like loving your car but not changing the oil in it." It's not fair to say that if you haven't had access to the car for a year!
  3. I always look forward to the "They're building such CRAAAAPPP!!!" feature, but I understand it seems repetitive...but just promise that when you happen across particularly egregious examples, you'll still throw them out for us! Wow...browsing through the homes on the auditor's site, that's almost $300K more than any sales on the street...wow...
  4. These people had to strip their houses bare, and then haven't been allowed to touch them house in a year...we probably ought not judge their housekeeping skills based on that example...and keep in mind, it's that Smith Road has been expanded to 5 feet in front of the house, not the other way around... But yeah, they certainly look a little lonely and run-down - and the big chain-link fence around it only increases the effect...
  5. ^I've noticed that people always say that, and that nobody I've met in the last 10 years has actually cared about any of that. Maybe I'm not running with the right crowd, but social status? Honestly? Sure, jokes and whatnot, but actual social status, whatever the hell that is? I think it makes for a funny joke, but it's neither sad, painful nor true. But again, maybe I just run with the wrong crowd...
  6. Ah, wonderful! Thanks for the visit!

I would offer sincere condolances, but I'm not sure that it would be appropriate...hmm...

^A-frickin'-men...of course, I have far farther to go to die from malnutrition than you! I added Nicola's, then realized the same thing as you...
  9. All of this has made me realize that I haven't been up there since I was a kid...would make a nice trip...
  10. ^Why do you think I think it's such a great idea?
  11. That's fantastic...let's hope it catches on!
  12. First vote! Gotta be the Reds for me...although if the Indians made it to the series again, I'd probably take time off work to head north and watch the games with my family, rooting for them whole-heartedly!
  13. Wow - 40% of roads not having a sidewalk seems awfully high to me - am I just unaware of what's normal in most places? $30/month over 10 years is $3600 (assuming they aren't charging interest). If the sidewalks would be 36" wide (the Americans with Disabilities Act requires 36" sidewalks at a minimum...I can't find that text in the act itself, but this .pdf says it on page 4), that would mean you'd have to have 120 feet of frontage to be assessed $30/month. I'd bet the average frontage for most residential city streets is maybe half that - though if anyone has data on that, I'd be thrilled to learn what that number actually is.

My mom would always nag me about cleaning my room when I was a kid and a young punk teenager - we filled the archetypical roles well in that regard - but dad's response was always much more staid and logical. He'd set a deadline, after which said he'd go in with a pitch fork and a wheelbarrow and solve the problem himself. Yeah, that was pretty much all it took to convince me to handle the issue myself!
  15. Update from Joe Wessels: Dear Friends, This, Monday July 31st from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The Urbanists -- an informal group of city-centered residents and professionals -- have agreed to help lead a discussion about the future of WAIF community radio. We hope you will join us. One of the only community-membership-based radio stations left in the country, WAIF holds tremendous potential to unite diverse urban communities and build on our urban assets. As the recent CityBeat article demonstrates, this potential is not being realized, so many would like to explore how an expanded membership could bring new life to this unique community-building tool. The plan put forth to help the station is pretty simple. Create a truly inclusive WAIF-FM community that represents and mirrors the residents of the City of Cincinnati. Work to create and institute processes that will insure open, fair and ethical dialogue and participation that is open to everyone. Implement professional and sound management and financial accountability. Come to Simone's restaurant, DeSales Plaza, 1544 Madison Road in Walnut Hills for this discussion. We'll provide free appetizers and great networking from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and then we'll use our small group discussion format to explore the WAIF opportunity--especially how and why to grow the membership. The discussion will be lead by Jeffrey Stec, a professional facilitator and leader of The Urbanists. If you have any questions, please reply to this e-mail or call my cell phone at (513) 315-9979. Have a great weekend and hope to see you on Monday. Best, Joe Wessels P.S. Thank you to ListRocket for donating the e-mail service used to send this e-mail.

I suspect the picture is from the moment right after the machine was set up...Rob, is your desk still that clean?
  17. ^That absolutely rocks, mark...
  18. [note - not sure if this is the right board or not...I figured WAIF is a non-profit "business," but please move it somewhere more appropriate if it should live elsewhere!] I was on the old Brian & Joe Show mailing list, and got an email on it today about the troubles at WAIF. First, here's a Citybeat article on WAIF's FCC violations: http://www.citybeat.com/2006-05-03/cover.shtml According to Citybeat, they don't seem to be keeping the required logs, aren't following procedures for providing those logs to the public, didn't make the necessary pre- and post-license renewal messages, use advertising language in their donor recognition spots (which violates rules for public radio stations), and apparently substitute a Radio Shack Weather Alert Radio for the Emergency Broadcast System - and then lock it up in a room that people don't even have access to. The Board of Trustees seems downright hostile to Citybeat, which probably makes sense, because this isn't the first article Citybeat's written about WAIF - they wrote a piece when the board installed a camera in the on air studio for "security reasons." (http://www.citybeat.com/2006-02-22/news.shtml) That set off a war in blogville, apparently (I'm coming to this late in the game, so if other folks have a better history of the dispute, please augment for me!): http://www.cincinnatibeacon.com/index.php/magaddiction/comments/media_wars_waif_v_citybeat/ So Joe Wessels is trying to organize a membership drive, to help elect a new board: http://joewessels.net/2006/07/09/waif-fm-is-in-trouble/ ...and apparently the board has countered by moving the deadline for new memberships up by a month, to August 1st, and meanwhile, they've been firing any on-air folks who have in any way helped Citybeat in their articles: http://citybeatporkopolis.blogspot.com/2006/07/controlling-waif-my-evil-and.html Very sad state of affairs...it appears to me that the Board of Trustees is a bunch of fools for how they've behaved, but we have yet to hear their side of the story - which is because they won't sit down for an interview, and haven't countered any of the charges publically. If they've published their side of things, I haven't come across it...say, if any BOT's are members here on UrbanOhio, we'd love to hear the other side of the story!
  19. The only positive is that, if it had to happen, at least it happened now. Much worse to have happened after the whole training camp and exhibition games and game plans were drawn up around him at center.

    ^And 7 in a row at one point, and retired 13 straight...6 2/3rds, 1 earned run...woo frickin' hoo.
  21. I don't mind not having the surliness of Sitwells...but then, maybe my experience was out of the ordinary. But a Kona Bean would rock!
  22. Yay, a puppy! A puppy!
  23. Out of towners think most Cincinnatians love Pete Rose, Marge Schott, and WKRP in Cincinnati. Oh, sorry, you wanted misconceptions...
