  1. My bet is that the fountain had to move to the north end of the square due to whatever other design ideas they had...once there, that decided which way she'd face. Face her north or east and she'd look like she was bad and had to go stand in the corner...face her west and she's ignoring the square... That's my guess...as for what it means symbolically, I'd go with her facing the river, in all its glory...connected to history, looking to the future, always in progress, but always rooted in the past...sometimes a little dangerous, sometimes a little stagnant, but always pretty if you're looking down on it all from Mt. Adams...

^I was gonna say the same thing!
  3. So the Academy of World Languages, Fairview K-8 and Kilgour K-8 are all scheduled to be finished in a year, but none of them even have finalized designs yet...doesn't that seem a little...I don't know...ambitious?
  4. And lots just west of the square - don't they tow if you park in those lots? When I was in the seminary up in Wickliffe, a sports bar opened up right across the street on Euclid. Their lot would fill up on the weekends, and here, across the street, sat tons of parking. The folks were a little loud, and often rather drunk, but that wasn't why they stopped letting folks park there - it was because our insurance told us how much our rates would go up if we offered free public parking - and it was a tremendous amount... So, I'd imagine keeping the lots private, only valet access, opens up a number of surface spots that might not otherwise be available for parking - or at least that it could...

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous...wow, did you had some beautiful light some of those days! Gorgeous pictures... So, how much optical zoom do you get from the new lens?

    WKRP In Cincinnati theme...
  7. How many downtowns are we supposed to have?
  8. 928 Windsor just dropped its asking price to $169,975.
  9. Hyde Park is elitist. An entire neighborhood of $350K+ homes? That drives old blue-collar Oakley into the $200K+ range, for what was under $100K a few years ago? I've got nothing against Hyde Park, and it's beautiful and all, but for it to try to pretend to be anything other than an elite community of the wealthy is just absurd. It's like pretending Mt. Adams is still a hippy's paradise - it ain't. I love Hyde Park - rich folks gotta live somewhere too, and they're gonna dump money into their homes, and with an old housing stock and money dumped into it, it's gonna be a beautiful neighborhood. I love that it's in the city. I love that it supports high end grocery stores. But honestly - Hyde Park and Mt. Adams are the very definition of elitist. Let's not play make believe.
  10. Regarding the Gilbert/Sinton/Nassau triangle (see above here) - they're painting the building right at Sinton and Gilbert now. Here's the Sinton side from this morning:
  11. Agreed...although regarding the junk in the river, there's really nothing that can be done about that - the river was up to 31'+ and rising, which is five feet above pool stage...so it picks up current, and picks up deadfall all along its banks... Now, as for the other Banks, I'm with you! Though at least it's not parking lots and warehouses anymore...hopefully soon, hopefully soon... Great pictures, by the way! Were your shots of climbers shots of a different group, or were you able to take a camera with you?
  12. The Chilean Sea Bass turned out to be phenomenal. Wonderful flavor, and broiling it was perfect. I pre-heated the oven to 375 or so with the pizza stone in it, then set a thin baking sheet with the fish on it, on top of the pizza stone, right under the broiler, to help it cook through while it browned, and that worked great. The salad was wonderful, and Issue430's dressing was tasty (Mark, do you remember what you put in it? Oil, lemon juice, dijon mustard, vinegar of some sort, a dash of hot sauce, and some honey...anything else?), the veggies were great, the pork chops were tasty (a little blackening powder on them)...tasty, tasty, tasty...everything was great but the plum...
  13. Just came back from there - got some Chilean Sea Bass and some thick-cut pork chops, some veggies, and some fresh figs (yay!), a peach that looks very good, and a plum that looked great but tasted awful - no flavor. Very helpful staff - the guy at the seafood counter chatted with me for a few minutes about dinner options, recommended broiling the sea bass...loads of selection. The plum was very disappointing, but we'll see how the rest of it is. The produce looked wonderful...Issue430 is mixing up a salad dressing right now for a salad of orange peppers, red peppers, cucumber, mushroom and onions...
  14. Very cool...definitely, one for every neighborhood would be great.
  15. Wonderful news. I already drive to Hyde Park for my weekend frou-frou cooking fest (my local Walnut Hills Kroger has awful produce and no selection...aargh), so this is great - I can go here first, then swing by Kroger's/Biggs for anything they don't carry...I already make two stops some weekends - I prefer Biggs for fish and wine, but Kroger for meat and produce (Biggs always seems to be out of what I need), so I don't mind the extra stop...
  16. Well, they were debating between a new place for Nicola, a new place for Jean-Robert, and a new place for Mr. Ike, weren't they?
  17. Newport's got you taken care of: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4257.msg106639#msg106639 (sorry...)
  18. Coolness - thanks for posting these! I'd guess the firetrucks are there because they're shiny, mostly...they're kinda filler, I guess, but they're still cool to see. Great buildings in the backgrounds of some of those shots too...what's that kick-ass building with the flag on it in this shot?
  19. You can even upload a .jpg or .gif! Any attorney-types know if the pictures could actually be used as evidence? Like, chain of custody obviously isn't possible, but could they have experts testify that the pictures wasn't modified? That good enough?
  20. Some Sylvania residents putting up a fight over golf-club plan for green space Toledo Blade, 6/29/06 A preliminary plan by Highland Meadows Golf Club to turn city-owned green space into a chipping area is teeing off some residents. Opponents of the plan contend that the green space is a city park, and argue that the wooded area, home to deer, fox, and other wildlife, should be retained by the city, not sold off and clear cut to make room for a chipping area. Councilman Mark Bula is recommending that a public hearing be held to discuss the golf club’s interest in the city’s land, but no date has been set. Early this year, J. Michael Searle, general manager for Highland Meadows, sent Mayor Craig Stough a letter asking about the availability of city-owned land adjacent to the golf club’s property. After Mr. Searle sent another letter to the mayor recently stating that “We are now ready to move forward and begin dialogue for land acquisition,” the matter was referred to council’s building and grounds committee.

Yeah, the Glorious French Revolution, resulting in...er...well, blood in the streets, confiscation of property, the massacre of priests, the Reign of Terror, the short-lived Republic, then...er...yeah, the Emporer Napolean, horrific years of war, then...er...the restoration of the frickin' monarchy... And the Glorious Bastille Day, when the rebels murdered some jailers and set a half-dozen criminals free... Hey, gaslight, I'm a big francophile - I love the French, their culture, their cooking (man, can they make some wonderful sauces...), even their obstinancy in world politics - it's a helpful counter-balance sometimes. I never find jokes about their supposed lack of courage to be at all funny - read a little about World War I and that'll suck the humor from any such jokes. But honestly, their revolution inaugurated decades of horror, and rivers of blood. I'm happy to celebrate France - but the terror of idealists was not their finest hour. But I guess for someone who probably get history lessons from 700 wlw, your ignorance is understandable Honestly, you have no idea what you're talking about. I'll happily admit I have a ton to learn about European history - but dude, basically all I do in my spare time is study Arabic, read history and surf UrbanOhio. I listen to 700 when the Reds are playing. They're up 1-0 right now, by the way. Go Reds, and Go France!
  22. Wow - that's a fantastic history. Thank you so much for taking the time to write it up for us! Very cool...

Happy Reign of Terror Day! Thanks for the thread!
