Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionVery exciting for Nicola's - a business that struggled but stuck it out in OTR through the whole post-riots nightmare, and is one of the best restaurants in the city (and my personal favorite!)...doesn't sound like 3CDC handled this as tactfully as they should have - there was obviously miscommunication somewhere - but it's great that it's Nicola and not some out-of-towners or a chain or something...

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionWow - this was a pretty involved update! Good to see at least some noise about that north-of-Peebles-Corner area...even if nothing comes of those two projects (Park at Chapel and Lincoln at Melrose), it's nice to see the interest...with time, and with the continued development sneaking north up Park and Kemper, hopefully it's just a matter of time. Few things would make me happier than seeing the revitalization of Peeble's Corner. Doesn't have to yuppify - just revitalize enough to get non-check-cashing/pawn-shop businesses in. OK, they can yuppify the Kroger's anytime they like, though...

Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery, June 10th, 2006
^What about it makes it so studied? Like, are there specific characteristics that are the "Spring Grove Look", or an approach, or something else?

cleveland indians at the ny yankees
I sent this thread to my brother, who's a die-hard Cleveland fan (every sport), who lived in NYC for five or six years, moving back maybe 12 years ago...he loved it, took him back! Many thanks from him!

Gaa...say, maybe the problem is that you and I are home team bad luck bringers...maybe we should try to catch games in other cities...

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Wow, that's great news. 2-5 so far on the home stand, and we still sell out...I'm sure a lot of it is due to the Sox being in town, with Chicago folks in following the team, but it's still cool...go Reds!

UrbanOhio Best of Cleveland 2006
No doubt, Longhorn's has by far the best steaks of any chain restaurant...you can do better at a steakhouse, but for at least double the price. I hit Longhorn's probably once/month - I hit a Juff Ruby's place down here maybe once/year, if that...

UrbanOhio Best of Cleveland 2006
I would choose Great Lakes or the Renaissance Hotel lobby bar, but they don't want my business. That sounds like it's got an interesting story behind it...did I miss it in another thread, or is it something you can share?

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Marty kept talking on the radio yesterday about how the Bengals were at the stadium before the game, taking batting practice, hanging out, etc...that with Castellini, and now that they're not playing in the same space, they're trying to work together to build a rapport and all that...thought that sounded like a great idea... (Hey, maybe the Reds can visit Henry in jail!)

Cincinnati: Oakley: Marburg Square
^Then perhaps the suburban apartment complexes my in-laws have bounced around for the last few years have all be semi-urbanist. As I said, I have a pretty minimal understanding of exactly what it means - I just know this reminds me of Dawson's Creek in Ft. Wayne, or Craughwell in Dublin, only plopped down in the city where acreage is too valuable to have a set-back. Though I didn't realize the front doors opened to the street - although one wonders how often anyone will use those doors, and that's only on the perimeter. Kendall, what's you opinion of the places across Paxton from Hyde Park Plaza? Those strike me the same way...if you think those are radically different from what's going to be here, then I obviously am not conceptualizing Marburg Square right; if those strike you as largely similar to Marburg Square, then I'm probably way off on what I conceive "urbanist" to be...

Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
Stop whining. When OTR is crime-free, then replacing you would be a slap in the face. But when it's a pit of crime (in many areas), you ought to welcome all the help you can get. That's a legitimate concern - and one best solved by working together with the sheriff, not playing some juvenile "turf war" nonsense. Though I've gotta say, Leis is really setting himself up for a lawsuit...the city bought its way out of various lawsuits with the protection of the collaborative agreement - now everything alleged against the city can be alleged against the county, and there's no collaborative to hide behind. I hope he's having his deputies keep scrupulous records...

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
Tarbell's idea isn't just to have a slot thing there at Broadway Commons, it's to have a destination there, with shows and restaurants and probably hotels and a whole Fancy Night Out thing...a throwback to times when casino's were illegal, but the nightlife was hustling.

Cincinnati: Oakley: Marburg Square
CiNYC, well done, your comments seem fair and accurate...I really don't see a whole lot of difference between this and the suburban apartment complexes my in-laws have bounced between over the years. This is nicer, no doubt, but it doesn't seem like an urbanist concept, at least in my minimal understanding of the term...

Cincinnati: Purple People Bridge
Actually, you've gotta figure if they're looking at 1500 people/week, that's gonna be closer to 500 M-F, 500 Saturday and 500 Sunday...maybe not that extreme, but maybe 150 each day M-F, 400 Saturday, 350 Sunday? Something like that... But, their hours of operation are from 4:15am to 11pm. So figure 5:30 for the first start, 9:30pm for the last start. Two briefing rooms (and it could even be one room with AV gear for a movie, and a second where they get their gear on), and they can start a new group every half hour. So 33 runs/day, 12 per run, that's about 400 people. And that's assuming they can only start groups every half hour. Start them every 20 minutes and you fit 588/day; every 15 minutes and you fit 780/day across. I'm sure they've figured out their raw volume - I have no doubt they can throughput enough people. I just doubt they'll keep up sufficient volume over the long haul to meet that number. However, this is just an economic impact study, not a business model. Since they're paying rent for the bridge, their overhead has got to be awfully low - so even if they come nowhere near 80K, this should still generate cash for bridge maintenance, and buzz for the city...
-
Cincinnati: Purple People Bridge
Yeah, I heard that on the radio and thought, 80K? 1500/week? I'm sure they'll have the ability to throughput that many, and I'm guessing the summer will look awfully good, but really, 80K/year? I guess we'll see... It would be interesting to see a level deeper on the assumptions. Like, 40% of the 80K people will be out-of-towners - fine, I'll go with that - who will spend one night here, buy food, ya de da. Does 100% of what they spend get racked up to the bridge? Because I'd have to guess that the majority of that 40% was going to come here for King's Island or a Reds game or the Rembrandt exhibit or a Harley Club Ride or whatever else, and this may have sealed the deal kind of thing, but wasn't the purpose of the trip... Well, I wish them all the best, and I'm sure I'll represent at least two of those 80K myself, my wife another two, and hopefully by this time next year another 79,996 will have joined us!

Isn't it possible to give it some sort of facade? Fake red stone would be so much better...

Cincinnati: Schoolhouse Lofts (E. Walnut Hills)
Could have been so beautiful...I understand not recreating the spikey roof thing it used to have, and I dig the fenced-in terrace thing, but why on earth did they choose that gray vinyl-siding looking crap? What a shame...

NFL: General News & Discussion
Ah ha, correction - apparently he has no such clause: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05163/520196.stm So yes, in theory, the contract can prohibit whatever behavior is deemed to be dangerous, even if it's perfectly legal - however, that apparently isn't the case with Roethlisberger. Regardless, all the best to him for a speedy recovery...hopefully the attention this brings can save some lives, without costing him his career...

NFL: General News & Discussion
My understanding is that there is specific language written into NFL contracts that prohibit risky behavior. It's perfectly legal to skydive, but your life insurance contract isn't going to pay benefits if you die in an accident; similarly, it's perfectly legal to ride without a helmet in Pennsylvania, but if you've signed a contract agreeing not to do so, you're bound by that contract. I have no idea how specific the clause is, or what dangerous activity would be defined to include, but it's definitely possible that riding without a helmet is included.
