  1. The term "cybrary" must not take root...ick. Is that the back side of the statue? 'Cause...er...I'm not sure I'd want to be memorialized with something like that, especially if I'm remembered for my dealings with children... Hey, thanks so much for the updates, as always!
  2. Dude, do you post drunk? Because I don't understand a frickin' word you say.
  3. Drove past DeSales Corner yesterday, and saw scaffolding in the building at the corner of Madison and Moorman...no idea what's going on, but hey, maybe it's something good!
  4. Might be this is already a well-known spot, but I'd never seen it before...if you know for sure, maybe you can let other folks guess first!
  5. a) Where is the Lord's name mentioned? b) What the hell does the circulatory system have to do with anything? c) I think you've got your parts of speech confused..."ass" is a noun...
  6. Here's Monte's pictures: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=7880.0 ...btw, Monte, you did a great job tripod-free! Did you happen to get a shot from behind, with her hair flowing down like a waterfall? Oh, and regarding holy ass...I've definitely found I enjoy swapping curse words around into phrases normally associated with other ones...freshens them up...try it at home! Son of a sh*t!
  7. Jesus...I just took my parents (in from Cleveland-way) to the Rembrandt exhibit at the Art Museum tonight, and saw The Genius of Water up close, and holy ass...wow. I think Monte got some pictures of it a little while ago...trust me, folks, go to see it while it's still at the Art Museum...it's free, and OMFG, it's absolutely amazing. Gorgeous. You're right there, and can see all the detail...amazing, I go to see the prints of one of the, maybe, three greatest artistic geniuses in the history of man, and I'm fascinated by the shower-head-looking holes in the palms of this one fountain statue...
  8. No, it's a synergy. The more people you attract to downtown/OTR/NKY, the more people will want to come to downtown/OTR/NKY...at least that's what I've always thought - and hoped...

That's pretty cool...where'd you find it?

^Regardless of the numbers, super-props to Playhouse Square...doesn't really make any difference if there are 400 or 600 seats here or there or whatever...god bless Denver, and God bless Playhouse Square... ...and Cincinnati has something it can learn about preservation of theaters from our northern bretheren...I'd love to see "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" in the Emery...
  11. He'd be wearing what instead?

Well, the Denver Performing Arts Complex is a single complex, and appears to have more seats than Playhouse Square. Again, I worship at the altar of Playhouse Square, but it appears that it's not "the largest integrated concentration of theater seating" either. But honestly, who cares? 10K seats in five or six venues? That's fantastic. I was talking with my brother about Playhouse Square, and he told me some of the history, how the theaters were saved from demolition in part because a guy held a show in the lobby - a four-person vaudeville type thing with no set and just a piano. It got folks into the buildings and made them realize what they really had there. And I just had to think, god, I hope someone does that with the Emery... And then I thought, what if someone put on that exact same show that saved the [Ohio? State? I forget which] in the Emery - tie into that Ohio heritage, get it in the news, and get folks into the building...

The maps I bought only go as far west as Anderson Ferry, so I can't help with that...though I might drop another $5 on the next quadrant west to find out! Checking...actually, to cover the Ohio-Kentucky border from the Indiana state line to Anderson Ferry, you need to buy the following quadrants: Lawrenceburg, Hooven, Addyston and Burlington...Burlington covers about half that distance, and the rest is divided about evenly between the other three. So $20, just for the definitive 1985 ruling on the border, which Yahoo may well have accurately depicted already...hmm...debating...
  14. Your proximity to Cincinnati! (hahaha...sorry, about that! It was a joke, honest!)

Since the time that was written, the dilemma he outlines has been resolved - the Supreme Court in the 1980's defined the boundary as the low water mark as it existed in 1793, and established a commission to figure out where exactly that was. If you go to the tangential posts in the other thread (http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5800.0), there are references and links for that. That's a great description of the source of the debate, though...I hadn't seen the examples of islands and stuff in the other things I'd come across...definitely, thanks for taking the time to post all that! Is this a book you have on your own bookshelf? That's pretty damn cool...

Wasn't there a Kennedy or something like that? Small theater...I subbed on piano for Flanagan's Wake back in 1996 in something, down on a lower level...that was a very fun show. OK, according to the Denver Center for Performing Arts, the Denver Performing Arts Complex has 11,260 seats in 11 venues in its 4-block site: http://www.denvercenter.org/faq/faq_list.cfm I couldn't find any numbers for Playhouse Square on their own website, but according to Downtown Cleveland Partnership, its capacity is 10K: http://www.downtownclevelandpartnership.com/pr/PR020304.html BTW, I think a 10K seat, six theater complex is absolutely fucking stellar - congrats and well done, especially considering the whole thing was nearly abandoned and razed. I feel bad even raising the point - but I was curious, and wanted actual facts...anyone have anything definitive? I can't find anything on the http://www.playhousesquare.org site...

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_Performing_Arts_Complex), Denver's Performing Arts Complex is #2 with 10,800 seats...anyone have figures on Playhouse Square? I definitely don't trust Wikipedia as a source for this kind of ranking, unless it's a strict list of venues...

Say, who remembers when Sitwells used to be the Cove?
  19. RiverViewer replied to a post in a topic in Urbanbar
Yeah, I was bitching about Sitwells. Not the quality of their coffee, just the surly nature of the owner, and the absurdity of trying to charge me $3.50 for a fill-up of a 20oz mug of regular coffee... What is that one on Columbia Parkway, maybe Koba Bean or something? Kona Bean? Tiny little place, but really nice folks, I try to stop there whenever I can...
  20. Three venues...that's what Stratford, Ontario has for their Shakespeare Festival. That town is built on that festival (and it's a gorgeous town, wonderful theater, fantastic way to spend a long weekend)...I wonder if they might get something like that going here - run a coordinated festival with maybe six shows running in the three venues...only issue would be hotel space nearby - in Stratford, you stay at a hotel or B&B in town, park your car, and walk everywhere. That wouldn't be very practical in Mt. Adams...but that's easily solved with public transit...

    That's fantastic...
  22. I'd guess that's what he got arrested in, and somehow ended up with a court appearance straight-off...but yeah, if he had a choice, he chose poorly...

I'll go through and look at the maps I got more closely, see if there are any other distinguishing elements, and compare/contrast...it was late last night when I realized I hadn't posted this, so I just went for the most obvious feature (the big jog by Coney Island)...

Over in Inkaelin's Favorite Ohio Bridge thread, PigBoy and I went off on a tangent regarding the Ohio-Kentucky border. I thought that rather than continuing to pollute that thread, I'd start a new one just about the border (BTW, if any admins want to split those posts over to this thread, it would probably be helpful! Here's a list of the message numbers: 56502, 56503, 56508, 56519, 56574, 56640, 56648, 56652, 56654, 56661, 56766 and 56778.) Anyway, picking up with this: I've changed my mind on this. I've decided that there's no compelling reason to suspect that the border as drawn on many maps (such as Google Maps) is not accurate. I forgot to post this, but back in January I went to the Ohio Division of Geological Survey and purchased five or six different maps - three or four of the 7.5 minute topo's, and then the two Ohio-Kentucky Border maps for the Cincinnati area (the Covington and Newport quadrangles). They illustrate that your earlier apprehension about trusting a map's border, at least in the case of Ohio and Kentucky, was wise. Here's the Geo Survey's map of the border between California and Highland Heights: ...and here's Google's map, which shows an obviously inaccurate border - it misses the big jog by Coney Island (red arrow), and misses the northward shift over at Mile 460 (blue arrow): However, not all maps are built the same! I checked Yahoo and Windows Live Local, and both of them seemed to have accurate border data. Here's Yahoo: ...and here's Windows Live Local: So I guess the moral of the story is that you can't trust everything you see on the internet!

I don't get it. They pay $10/hour...that's nearly double minimum wage. They offer a 401(k). They offer benefits. And that's exploiting them? I'm sorry, I'm completely off the boat on this one.
