The UrbanOhio Cincinnati Meet - SATURDAY!!!
^Woo hoo! I never got to meet you when I was still travelling to Ft. Wayne semi-regularly, and despite my dissing, you're still coming to my city! Of course, it's to meet the cool kids, not me, but I'm still happy! Pigboy, I think it's just a buck or two for the big surface lot at 6th and Race - the one I was parked at initially when we met up a month or so ago. Happily, the Reds are not at home that weekend, so the lots shouldn't be special-event-priced... And if a couple folks want to avoid paying for parking entirely, I'm sure we can arrange for them to partner up with locals, park free on the street in neighborhoods and catch a ride downtown. I might not be in the meet for the duration, but I can certainly get a couple folks from Walnut Hills down to the meet itself...Andy, you know where I live, if you're interested...

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
A) I think the meditating for peace is a bunch of hooey, but I also think it's very cool, and plan to get up in the morning and get some pictures of it. God love 'em, and I know it won't hurt. B) Ghiz should shut the fuck up. He's the chief executive of a city of 300K in a metro of what, pushing 2MM people? And it just takes one crazy idiot like the one who killed Kabaka Oba? I don't begrudge the mayor a bodyguard, and I suspect it sounds awfully petty to others as well. But then I wasn't a Ghiz fan in the first place...

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
There are what, 800K+ people in Hamilton county? 300K+ people in the city of Cincinnati? I suspect if you want to hold county-wide office, appealing to the anti-city sentiment of 63% of your constituents is probably fairly good politics... At least the pressure's still on. This is a much more encouraging time than, say, a year ago. Folks are really actually talking about it now, and the best posture is wanting to get it done (albeit in your own way), not wanting to obstruct it...

Which small Ohioan towns are worth visiting?
Actually, I'd say the community band is top-notch. If they're doing the Sousa bit, Marcus Neiman dresses up like Sousa, directs like him, and the band really nails it. Truly a great musical experience, right there in the town square.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & Construction^Folks to whom the outside of a house isn't very important...folks who pretty much want to be left alone, like to drive into their house and be surrounded by nice stuff, not have to walk through the rain or cold...folks who don't like the noise from neighbors, don't really care about neighborhoods one way or another, just like to go to their jobs in the morning, come home at night, and have a safe place to raise a family. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, as it were.

A new look at Cincinnati. Skyline, Architecture & Good Weather *Mega Thread*
Which Mt. Adams bridge? You mean the one on Ida? Hmmm...I always thought that was from a higher angle than that...but maybe I'm remembering wrong... The shot rocks out, of course!

A new look at Cincinnati. Skyline, Architecture & Good Weather *Mega Thread*
Where was this one taken from? The batter and catcher with PNC, National City and Scripps in the background - that's a fantastic shot! Especially with that back-lit and darker twilight lighting... Oh, and where's this one from? I'm not used to seeing the overview from that low of an angle: Definitely completely rocks out...thanks for posting! Oh, one more question, if I can...where is this?

Which small Ohioan towns are worth visiting?
Oh, there's also a lot of charm to Portsmouth. There are murals on their flood walls, lots of older (though many empty) buildings, and Shawnee State Park and Resort is just down the road, with hiking and swimming and all that. Makes a nice weekend...

Time for a SPRING pictures thread
None really from this year - but here's a Cincinnati in Spring thread from last year: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2837.0

Which small Ohioan towns are worth visiting?
I always dug Barberton, but I don't remember anything special about it - I got the tour with a native, and got to walk all over this great little small single-family neighborhood-feeling town...

Norwood: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe last clause in the 5th amendment just says, "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." But state laws can establish their own rules, as long as they only offer more protection than the 5th amendment, not less - Ohio couldn't say that takings are permitted without just compensation - but they could say takings are never permitted in the state. In Ohio, the law ("§ 163.09. Valuation of property taken; how determined." - you can go to http://codes.ohio.gov, go to the revised code, Title I, section 163.09...I don't see how to permalink, at least not on a mac) doesn't really give guidance: "the court, on motion of a public agency, shall declare the value of the property taken and the damages, if any, to the residue to be as set forth in any document properly filed with the clerk of the court of common pleas by the public agency." I'm certain there are guidelines somewhere for doing this, but I have no idea where to look.

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & Construction^The houses had small yards in part because some of the yard was stripped away by eminent domain in the first place...here's a summary I wrote up of my understanding of it, from this time last year.

Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
^There's a good bit of history that goes into why it is the way it is today. When I first moved down here, maybe I was just naive, but I'd drive through OTR any time of the day or night. But after the riots five years ago, there was a menace there I hadn't felt before - maybe it was just my perception. But then after the fallout from the riots, there was a police slowdown, and all hell broke loose. Drugs and gangs spread like mold - they'd always been there in the grout before, but now they spread everywhere - to extend the analogy, they took root in the drywall and the studs and the floorboards. And, to extend the analogy way beyond its useful reach, it looks like the police and the citizens and soon the county are finally starting to apply some serious-ass bleach... Very simplified version, and folks who know more should feel free to correct and upbraid me for it!

Cincinnati Aerials: Part II
I think we had to stay 1,000 feet above the highest object in a 1 mile radius. Figure 500 feet above sea level downtown plus what, 650 for Carew? Plus 1,000, so the minimum was around 2150...a few radio towers might have been higher, plus the pilot was very safety conscious (which was greatly appreciated!), so I think we figured on 2500. CVG cleared us up to I think 2900 and gave us a nice blanket clearance, talked with Lunken for us so we didn't have to a) do a hand-off and b) essentially exunt stage left from CVG's Class B airspace - we flew right over Lunken and then back over downtown. Air traffic control was really nice... Anyway, back to the question - I think we were at about 2500 feet, which means about 2000 feet above downtown, about 1700 feet above Mt. Adams, and somewhere in between for the rest of the area.

At one time, the second most dense city, next to Manhattan...
When I saw the following shot from ColDay and my recent flight, I immediately thought of the shot you just posted, David...not the same angle, but you get the idea: Poor quality, with a strut in the way, but you get the idea...hopefully ColDay got a better shot...

Black owned businesses in Ohio
Monte: Riverviewer, maybe if the newspapers in Cincinnati did half the research as you did we wouldn't have the misleading headlines we tend to have in our newspapers. I've always been disappointed that journalists learn journalism, and not actual, you know, stuff. Like, spend a couple years studying chemistry, and you'll not only understand how science works, you'll also understand enough math to explain election results. But study writing styles, and all you'll understand how to sound like you aren't utterly ignorant, whether you are or not. X: ^^Once again, we should be looking at metro numbers, not municipalities. Completely agreed. Wish the business data had been MSA-based... C-Dawg - I think for our purposes here (basically, how well is the average black guy doing vs. how is the average white guy doing), median income by race would be much more illustrative...like, the folks living in Indian Hill pumping up the average income for whites doesn't really do much to reflect how I'm doing. Unfortunately, I don't see it broken down by race anywhere...it is interesting how drastically median income varies by city - though again, MSA would be much more helpful... Median Income: Youngstown: 24,201 Cleveland: 25,928 Dayton: 27,423 Cincinnati: 29,493 Akron: 31,835 Toledo: 32,546 Columbus: 37,897
