Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Ah, I see, it wasn't earmarked for welfare, but just for helping the poor...and given that we still have poor, having unspent money means we're doing something very wrong, not something very right...

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
How can we just spend money on new projects when it was given for a different purpose? Why aren't we sending it back to the Federal government? I guess that's how it works, and I don't know that it's necessarily a bad thing if it's going to help the folks it was intended to help - I just wonder how this works...

urbanohio bumper stickers
Kinda funny - when I went into the framed pictures, Cincinnati Skyline at Night, and clicked to enlarge, I got what appeared to be an even smaller version of the picture in the pop-up window...actually, it's the same deal with the bumper stickers... What do the frames look like?

Black owned businesses in Ohio
According to the census, using data from 2000 combined with the business data from above, here's each city, the number of black-owned businesses, the total population, the percent of that population that's black, the resulting total black population, and then the number of black folks per black-owned business. The lower the final number, the higher the density of black-owned businesses: Just looking at Youngstown's numbers, this is obviously greatly impacted by the business climate...it would be interesting to look at this figure for white folks, controlling for when the businesses were started, so 50 year old businesses don't skew today's results. Looking at the number of businesses started in the last 10 years, compared with population, across races. That should control for the business climate and entreprenurial opportunities, and give us a better idea of what cities are actually doing the most to promote minority-owned businesses...

Newport, KY: Newport on the Levee: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionYeah, I'm definitely not on the NOTL-bashing team. It's fairly compact (considering all it has in it), pedestrian-friendly, garage parking (with more surface lots than I'd like, but I'd imagine those will be developed at some point), draws folks who happily mill around outside enjoying the views, it's the primary traffic draw for the pedestrian bridge (which is one of the greatest things we have on the riverfront today), and my wife and I can walk to a movie (with super-comfy stadium seating) and a bookstore and catch dinner, and we live in Walnut Hills...a cab ride home is $8, and it makes for a wonderful day. I'm sure NOTL is also a major traffic draw for the riverfront parks, and it'll be a great accompaniment to whatever goes in at the Banks.

Stained Glass in my home!
He can do anything - a straight copy of a piece, or something original but in a certain style, or something inspired by something else, loosely based on it...in our case, we really dug the Tree of Life from the Gamble House in Pasadena: When we decided to have a piece done, we remembered this from an Arts and Crafts style book - our house is Arts and Crafts, so it seemed an appropriate homage - but the more we looked at it, the less we liked the bulbous look, and it seemed pretty lifeless. That was about all Nicki had to go on to design it... Anyway, yeah, they could do whatever someone wanted...I can get their information to anyone interested...

Is that open to the public? I'm sure it would be...I'll have to check that out. These are cool too - earthquake roses - patterns made in sand when a pendulum that's tracing its path through sand is in an area with an earthquake: http://www.earthquakerose.com/

Stained Glass in my home!
Definitely does...I've only seen it at night one time now, and the photo is blending in my head with what I saw, so at this point I can't remember if that's actually what it really was or not...I think I do control the balance, and the exposure, and maybe the f-stop, but I'm not sure on that...

Ah, very cool! I had no idea...my in-laws are in Columbus, so I'll have to have us go there when we're up sometime...I've been wanting to go hang out with a Foucault's Pendulum for a long time now, and haven't made a special trip for it yet. Thanks for the heads up!

Stained Glass in my home!
My wife and I have some friends who do fantastic work - Rich has done everything from repairing burnouts in Baltimore to teaching sculpture at Dennison to making jewelry to fabricating tools to cabinetry to handiman work (electric, plumbing, foundation repair, carpentry, etc., etc.) to tattooing - there's just nothing he can't do. His wife is a fantastic artist, and a painter, and can do about anything that involves finishing work. They're really fun people, and amazing artists. They used to work on a house we were renting in, and when we bought our own house, we had them help us out with anything that came up. We've been wanting to commission some stained glass pieces from them for a while now, so we finally saved up some money and budgeted it in with a half bath we had them put in (our house only had one full bath upstairs, but we had a perfect spot for a half bath on the first floor). Yesterday I took the day off work to help on the install... Here's the half bath they just finished, pre-stained glass: And the stained glass...first the piece in the high window above the sink, from the bathroom side - it's a background of a black baroque glass, with green and purple leaves on brownish vines: ...and from the other side, in the sun room: This is Rich installing the piece in the transom above the french doors he built three years ago - clear baroque with green and purple leaves again, different pattern, with lighter vines: ...and this was the main piece. It's all opaque glass so that you can't see someone in the bathroom...we tested it out last night, and you can't see a thing through it - that was the worry, that we'd need a privacy curtain or something in the bathroom, but even if you get close to the window from the outside, the glass blurrs everything completely... Here's a shot with the two half bath pieces, plus a reflection of the tree in the mirror: Here's some shots I took last night after dark, with the windows back-lit. This shot definitely doesn't do it justice - it loses the greens entirely, and darkens all the brown-reds and splashes of yellows and such...any advice on how I can get a better shot of this? ...with the door closed:

Wow...that's so beyond anything I'd imagine doing...of course, I would drive to Indy to go to that museum with a Foucault's Pendulum, so I guess it's diff'rent strokes...

Ach, depends on what you do...we have both a mac and a pc, and I prefer the pc... But man are there some nice Macs out there, no doubt...my mom's boss just got her some huge-ass thing, looks like a flat-panel monitor - and that's it, that's the whole computer. Gotta be a 21" screen, maybe more, keyboard, mouse and power, and that's it. Very, very cool looking...

Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
The most shocking social contrast I've ever seen in the city has been at the intermission during an Opera - dressed-to-the-nines Opera-going smokers standing on the steps, then the folks meandering in and out of Washington Park, with a few cops to stop panhandling...man, one incident there could be devastating to the Opera or CSO... I wonder what some of the really big-name donors think of moving the CSO...anyone know the Rosenthals or Lindners or Corbetts?

The Kenwood Symphony Orchestra? F*** that...I'd far rather see the Bengals play in Blue Ash than have the orchestra move to some garbage strip-mall architecture nonsense off 275...ick ick ick... Yeah, I'll have to follow the Washington Park thread...sorry about that, and thanks for the heads up!

Wrong Numbers
^Yeah, having worked in the debt collection business, I would NEVER name my son after me...same name, same permanent address (at least for some period of adult life)...you're really risking trouble.
