Two Cincinnati Aerial Teasers
I mostly took film shots - shot six rolls, and got the main things I wanted to get with that - but did take just a couple digitals...should have switched it up a little more, but with ColDay covering the digital world, it felt...well, redundant, and somehow out of place! BTW, if you've never met someone who, from the air, moving at 100+ mph, can pick out landmarks in the distance like Downtown Frickin' Glendale and Reading's business district, come to one of the meets and say hi to ColDay...I know Cincinnati pretty well, and I had a hard time picking out Hyde Park Square - even with the Madison and the river and downtown for reference. But downtown frickin' Glendale? Christ... Also, as you can see from the relative picture quality, my shots are a poor, poor substitute for ColDay's - everyone should sign a "Post The Foockin' Aerials, ColDay" petition...maybe we should set up a poll question - "Should ColDay post his f'in aerial photos? Yes/No" Anyway, here's my unaltered, uncorrected pictures: Managed to get both a strut and my finger in this shot...it's embarrassing to post, but it's the only really wide overview I have: Licking River action... Cap that highway! It's well-connected with downtown with every N/S street crossing with really wide sidewalks, but still - cap that highway! Yeah, mine are untouched, uncropped, and unlevel! Intersectional Clusterfarg: I do like the Convention Center's "cincinnati" text: Blurry Christ Hospital, with Blurview Hill Park: Sorry for the blur and the crap, and trust me, I await ColDay's pictures with probably more anticipation than anyone!

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Kevmr25, you should find yourself one of these! EDIT: not meant to imply that you're a dumb-ass - on re-reading, I realized that implication might come across - definitely not intended as such! Just mocking Mr. Clarett...

Melan Arch Bridge Retaining Wall
Took these last night on my way home from work...not great shots, since I was driving and didn't have time to stop and walk back for pictures, but you get the idea. They did a really nice job... In this shot, the affected area is the section of slightly lighter wall past the bridge on the right: You can see the line and arrow on the left side of this image showing where the restacking began:

Columbus: Hotels, Conventions and Tourism News & Info
Cincinnati's hosted the Democratic National Convention twice - first in 1856, nominating James Buchanan - sorry about that - and then in 1880, nominating Winfield Hancock, who lost to Garfield (who is buried at the other end of Ohio!) The Republicans nominated Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876 in Cincinnati, and have held two conventions in Cleveland - nominating Calvin Coolidge in 1924 (who won) and Alfred Landon in 1936 (who lost by the most lopsided margin since James Monroe was re-elected in 1820).

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Man, watching the last couple of days, it's gonna be a long summer. We're 4-1, but the bullpen just cannot put out a fire, and worse yet, it starts plenty of them...go Reds, but I am concerned...

Yeah, dude should probably get a frickin' handle on his investments...I don't think it really means much, but it sure makes him look stupid, and it's easily fixed...(much more easily than changing his stated policies, at least!)

I've heard about hail...we're going to Columbus this weekend to visit the in-laws, and rather than leaving early, we're going to hang at work for a while and let it pass by...

Oh, gods...I really, really wanted to like Galvin when he and his brother had that radio show on WVXU, but sweet Christ, everything was a side bar, an interruption...he couldn't just tell a frickin' story, it was, "and by the way, _______, which meant - oh, before I forget, _______" It was painful. He's a bright guy, lots of interesting things to say, but please God, let him have an editor...

Pbase lets you zip the .jpg's and upload the zip file, then it unpacks them for you...also, you can load whatever size you like, then it creates small, medium, large and originals, and you can then link directly to any of the sizes you like...

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
Maybe residency requires being there for a certain amount of time? Like, if 150 beds are 30-60 day sentences, maybe they aren't counted as residents?

London, UK
Wow...just - wow... Very nicely done! Definitely gotta go there some day. My dad's been there two or three times a year for probably ten or fifteen years, normally a week at a time, for work. He keeps telling us that we need to go, and I know he's right, but man, this thread really cinches the deal!

Ohio unemployment numbers
The rate on the map is not the seasonally adjusted rate (which I finally figured out by seeing the captions - "US rate of 5.1% or lower" - the 5.1% rate is the US's non-adjusted number). So maybe we're just seeing a much more dramatic seasonal effect? I don't know the area, so I don't know if that's reasonable or not...

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
The Republic has survived far, far worse in the past, don't worry...and we've always had blowhards, and theocrats, and people who supported them. In the throes of Watergate, a bad economy, and appalling fashions, Nixon still had 24% approval when he was driven from office - 24% of the people still answered the question, "yeah, I think the dude's doing a good job." In the midst of stagflation, with old folks' life savings being devoured by inflation, super high unemployment, an energy crisis, Americans being held hostage, and frickin' disco, Jimmy Carter never once dropped below 30% approval. 30% of the people said, "go, Jimmy, you're doing a good job." Not "Reagan's going to eat my children, I'd rather keep Jimmy in office" - no, objectively, I'm happy with Carter. That's insanity. And yet, we survived just fine, thank you. And we survived far, far worse - far more devisive times, far more incivility (when's the last time cabinet members got into a fist fight?), far more theocracy, far more suppression of personal liberty, far more everything that's decried as abominable today. That doesn't mean we ought not fight injustice et al - just that we really shouldn't hyperventilate over it...it's assuredly not the end of the Republic...
