Sunrise over Lake Monona
Wow - I'm a big sunrise fan...thank you! Definitely gotta get up for sunrises more often than 3 times every 25 years! Definitely dig the colors - too bad there weren't some high clouds to give you some of those kick-ass effects as well...you'll just have to keep trying!

A side of Cincinnati that will be new to...well, probably nobody!
Actually, I used to play organ for Northside United Methodist Church, back before it shut down (I believe that was 2002 or so), and I'm friends with the former pastor. He's kind of bounced around with AME and some other sub-denomination, C-something? forget what it's called...very cool guy - he helps lead tours at the Freedom Center on the weekends, attended seminary in Tennessee, I believe, tried to get Northside's church revived, but it was the wrong church in the wrong place at the wrong time... Anyway, if you'd like to talk with him, PM me and I'll hook you up with him...

Melan Arch Bridge Retaining Wall
I'm sure it does bow out, but it's either not enough to worry about, or else they'll get to it as we move along...I'm guessing it's the first, though...

Melan Arch Bridge Retaining Wall
In an effort to way, way over-cover this, here's some shots from this evening...I went on a bike ride after work, and there was no tarp on the wall tonight - yay! As you can see, they've decided to use some mortar as they restack the stones this time. ...forgot my camera at work, so I had to use the old HP C200 1MP clunky camera...but it worked well enough, I guess...

The UrbanOhio Cincinnati Meet - SATURDAY!!!
Found out over the weekend that his graduation is also my new next-door neighbor's graduation...so for the sake of good neighborly relations, I'll probably skip the "friends in low places" tribute...

That's gotta go on a pamphlet or banner or something...or a t-shirt. "Be fascinated until death...in Hamilton!"

Newport, KY: Newport on the Levee: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionYeah, I've never had an issue there. Teenagers are punks, no doubt, and I may get annoyed because they're, you know, breathing and stuff, out in public - but I've never had an issue there.

David Justice owned it from 1998 through 2003...if it sold recently, the auditor's site doesn't have the information recorded yet (address is 945 Hill). Conover Court - I definitely don't want to be recruiting for Cincinnati at the expense of our sister cities - but if you're going to be leaving Cleveland anyway, Cincinnati's a wonderful option...you should come down to Cincinnati's meet on May 20th, see the UrbanOhio point of view, with some amazing folks leading tours and all that...

Melan Arch Bridge Retaining Wall
A couple shots from this morning, about 8:30, with the tarps off and work beginning on Day 2: Here's the operative section of the first shot at full size...I shouldn't have turned off the flash, I guess, but I thought it would be rude to drive slowly past flashing snapshots of the guys working...I know if I were them, I'd be annoyed. I should have parked and walked over, been nice to them, and gotten some close-ups...maybe tomorrow...

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I hate Blackwell as much as the next guy, but this just plain looks desperate. Dude's honestly going to steer state contracts in the hopes that maybe he can turn his $10K investment into what, $15K? When he's worth millions and millions? And has the extremely plausible explanation that, among the probably hundreds of companies he owns probably thousands of shares in, he wasn't told about this one? Look, I've got a 401(k), and if it was investing in the John Wayne Gacy Foundation's NAMBLA Fund, I'd have no frickin' idea. If Blackwell owned half a million dollars in it, sure - but c'mon, this is stupid. There's plenty to work Blackwell over about...if they decide this is where they want to focus, I'll be extremely disappointed...how about we beat his ideas?

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionDude, chill...I'm sure if you want to start hosting a Butler/Warren random developments thread, you'll get nothing but support and encouragement. But this is a bit rude, biting the hand that feeds you and all that - he goes out and researches it all, and tosses it in this thread for easy perusal, and you're complaining? Chill, man... Edit: Sorry, I'm not a moderator, I probably shouldn't be telling anyone to do anything...how about, "you might consider chilling, dude..." Apologies all around...

Melan Arch Bridge Retaining Wall
Folks have probably noticed the cones in the right lane of southbound Eden Park Drive under the Melan Arch Bridge of late - well, I guess they started work on restacking the wall today:

MLB: General News & Discussion
So you can't listen to baseball games online anymore unless you go through MLB.com. And I'm fine with that - it's their product, and while I'd prefer they thought of internet servers as just really strong radio towers, I can deal with it. They want you to pay $14.95 for a full year of MLB Audio. Not commercial-free audio, mind you - you're paying $15 for the privilege of listening to damn commercials...but you also can pull in any broadcast, either team's station, from anywhere in the world. So I'm fine with that. Don't like it, but I can deal with it. But when the fucking audio goes dead in the 3rd inning, right before the Reds rally, and when their phone number is nothing but a busy signal, and their online form is busted, won't take your comments...yeah, I'm basically despising them right now.

A couple gloomy days along the OHIO River.
Very cool...I really, really dig your second shot - all the angles and curves and textures and depth...very nicely done. And your Roebling shots are definitely keepers - nicely framed, and you even got the keystone!

No matter how you spell it, Cincinnatti's the enemy - ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
^We ran into a girl who made the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge a pedestrian bridge yesterday after her car broke down on it, so actually you were right!

^It doesn't take much! Take a week's vacation, stay a couple nights in a B&B in Clifton's Gaslight (there are at least two to choose from, maybe more), a couple nights downtown, a couple nights somewhere near Mainstrasse in Covington, and we'll have you hooked! The only thing that could drag you away would be the siren's call of Cleveland and Lake Erie... OTRFan - actually, my wife's the one who saw it...asked me if he was doing what she thought he was doing...er, yep! You know, don't you think you'd find somewhere a little less conspicuous? There are bridges everywhere around there, and while they've done a good job getting rid of places folks could hide, still, you don't have to stand on top of the Serpentine Goddamn Wall...jeez...

A side of Cincinnati that will be new to...well, probably nobody!
Took a walk through Eden Park, Mt. Adams for lunch, down the Celestial Street Steps, across the Purple People Bridge, and thence to Newport on the Levee for ice cream and a movie...and a cab back home! It was gorgeous this morning, a bit less so during the walk - we got caught in a squall in Eden Park. But a beautiful day. Any idea what's up with the luau theme? Fr. Quinn didn't seem to mind... The bush has been wacked...good to see - as long as the hillside stays where it's supposed to. New construction in Mt. Adams...they shoehorned this one in there, but man is it gonna have some killer views... These are doubtless some of the coolest steps in the city. Not the prettiest (my vote for that currently goes to the ones between the Elsinore Towers and the Art Museum), but the bridge over 50 makes these the coolest... Mt. Adams sign, and downtown behind. Median sidewalk...some day I'll go exploring... The nascent Captain's Watch or Captain's Landing or Captain's Crunch or something... See the car in the middle of this shot, northbound on the bridge, far right lane? It was broken down. As my wife and I were checking out the view back up towards Mt. Adams, the girl who had been driving it walked up the steps - there was no break-down lane on the bridge, and she didn't feel safe waiting with it, didn't have a phone, etc., so she went walking to get to somewhere to call AAA. We let her call them with my phone, they said it would be an hour or so, and then we saw a cop pull up. So we called the Newport Police, and they said a tow truck was on the way. She didn't have a phone, didn't have cash, and we were worried about her walking back there on the bridge, offered to pay for a cab for her (they're always standing out front of Montgomery Inn), but she decided to walk back. It's actually not as far as it seems - we saw her get there a few minutes after she left. Lesson? Always carry at least a little cash, and an emergency cell phone is a pretty cheap investment. Oh, and include breakdown lanes whenever you build a bridge! Anyone know the story on this house? There's not a lot of Islamic-looking architecture in the city (the only other thing that comes to mind is the crescent and star at the top of the Eden Park Gazebo, which I've heard is a Basque symbol of some sort)... Spring is on its way... The Great American Broadcasting Company River Overlook, L&N being overlooked: I love the evolutionary timeline (sorry, the Dr. Frederick A. Hauck Geologic Timeline) in Sawyer Point...this couple had walked the whole thing, reading every block with text... The L&N again... Oops... The used car lot. This will make a good "before" picture in a week or two: This mud is from two weeks ago, when the river dropped down after reaching almost 40 feet... Apparently public restrooms just aren't public enough for this guy: The Elijah Scott Fishing Pier: A storm drain on the Purple People Bridge - wish it were this easy to drain my gutters! Fat Fish Blue didn't last long, I guess... I just liked the image of a horse carriage, with the driver on a cell phone: Oh, and one last shot from earlier in the day - I thought this looked like a roller coaster:
