The Way Citizens Deal With Corruption and Civil Injustice
if giant mobs of people are rioting they must feel VERY strongly about their beliefs or their cause. Whatever...if giant mobs of people are rioting, some of them feel VERY strongly that leading an out-of-control mob will bring them a lot of political power; some of them feel VERY strongly that participating in an out-of-control mob will give them a chance to smash stuff up and steal from Deveroes; some feel VERY strongly that maybe being out in the middle of the mob they can have some influence to stop the morons from burning down their own neighborhood; and yes, some feel VERY strongly that their political beliefs are important enough to damage their neighbor's property over. But please - rioting is NOT a form of political speech, it's a form of terrorism. And the fact that most folks don't resort to rioting is not a measure of their lack of political will, it's a measure of their maturity. AND, one last thing - I completely reject the assertion that folks don't care about politics like they used to...used to be some people were hyper-partisan Whigs, some were hyper-partisan Democrats, many could be swayed either way, and many didn't care. And today, some are hyper-partisan Republicans, some are hyper-partisan Democrats, many can be swayed either way, and many don't care.

Cincinnati: Schoolhouse Lofts (E. Walnut Hills)
Looking at it, I don't mind the concept of having a large deck around the entire top floor - but you're right, it would have to be brick. As it is, "it's a complete disaster" is exactly the right description.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
"Is mayday going to come and try to stab me with a knife?" I believe it would be the other way 'round...regicide is killing the king, so homocide would be killing the gay folk, I guess...indeed, that's quite the typo...

Wow...that looks completely atrocious. That is so utterly ugly...

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I'd just add that the whole statistic is a false proxy for what folks are really interested in. For the most part, people want to know what the likelyhood of them or their loved ones getting raped, robbed or killed is, and the homocide rate, while a flashy measure that's pretty easily understood (er...maybe this thread is evidence that it's not that clear) really says nothing about how dangerous a city is. In Cincinnati, most of the murders are drug related, and the explosion in our murder rate is due, in large part, to the riots and the subsequent police slowdown that handed the streets over to the worst elements. That means if you're looking to cheat your dealer or your supplier, Cincinnati may be more dangerous for you...but if not, measures like robberies and such are probably a much better indicator...at least it seems that way to me...

Carew from 14 miles away?!
^There's a discussion of that in this awesome thread MayDay posted when he got to go outside the Key Tower. The diagram in my post is missing - old ISP - but it probably makes sense without it...I'll try to go fix that at some point...

The Great Cincinnati Conservatism Thread
^It seems to me this isn't someone irritated because you have a different opinion - this is someone irritated because you are simply wrong. There isn't a parking issue in Cincinnati. Let me try that again. There isn't a parking issue in Cincinnati. Sure, compared with Tri-County or Fairfield or Kenwood (any time except before Christmas), parking is little less obvious - but as everyone's said, nobody's ever had to go more than a couple blocks to find street parking, and in that time could have chosen a surface lot and paid a couple bucks. You're just WRONG about there being insufficient spaces - and pointing that out isn't a difference of opinion, it's pointing out that you're WRONG, that's all. Shall I be snarky? And neither do you know as much about Cincinnati as you seem to think you do. Dude, you cited the Maisonette as an example of the bad business climate downtown. And you complain about VOA vs. Downtown being apples and oranges, then say NKY is "leaping ahead of us" - as though NKY is analogous to downtown rather than analogous to Cincinnati's first ring suburbs...I mean, come on, talk about apples and oranges...would you also say Walnut Hills is leaping ahead of Cincinnati because it's building a 14 story luxury condo tower by Eden Park? Is Clifton and CUF leaping ahead of Cincinnati because of all of UC's investments?

Ohio: Foreclosure News & Info
Despite my ringing endorsement of sub-prime lending generally (I think it's the most empowering development for the working poor that I can think of - see this post above), I think this sounds like a good bill. Yes, it will raise costs across the industry, but that ain't unprecedented - every product we buy has lawsuit risk factored into the price. But this provides a huge threat to the unscrupulous, and that's exactly who needs to be threatened. I'd imagine Ohio has been a magnet to those criminal types for a while, and this could shut that right off (assuming it passes the House). And a background check, looking for folks floating from state to state hunting prey - yeah, let's find out who they are before we license them. I'm surprised that isn't already part of the process. And creating a legal fiduciary duty - that sounds like a great idea. It's not like these folks aren't selling themselves as "looking out of you" or "on your side" - that's always the sales shpiel anyway - I don't see anything wrong with making them back that up. One thing in noozer's article from 2/22 that just bugged the hell out of me: Then I'm sorry, Joy, your ass needs to be voted out of the goddamn Senate. Are you honestly saying you'd let your own hurt feelings impact your votes as a State Senator? Coshocton didn't elect you so you could feel good about yourself - Ohio's constitution didn't create your office for your benefit, you idiot, they created it and you were elected so you could enact wise policy. Now suck it up and choose what's best for Coshocton and Ohio, not what makes you feel better by sticking it to some group you're upset with. A**hole.

What is your favorite business district of Cincinnati's 52 neighborhoods?
Definitely Ludlow for me. And actually, the IGA is a key to that. I used to live right on Ludlow at Whitfield, and nothing was cooler than walking to IGA to get that evening's food, stopping at Ludlow Wines on the way back to get a new recommendation from John, then walking back and grilling something tasty on the front lawn while watching the traffic go by...or walking to dinner and a movie, seeing all the people...any nice day, it's constantly occupied with people - walking, hanging out, it's just people-packed, and so welcoming and beautiful. I've never had an experience like it any other business district...I guess Hyde Park and Mt. Adams, but it's so young and vibrant and eclectic...anyway, definitely my favorite...

My number one draw to downtown when I didn't live in the city was visiting friends and relatives who did...residents are a draw in and of themselves...

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionNo, Ink, I'd agree with you - well, not 100% - I could give up the second and third blue ones (the first is kind of cool from behind), but the brick ones are cool, and that pink one is fantastic - really gives that corner its character. But then it ain't my decision...

Check out Cincinnati density in this video from somone's apartment.
Yeah, Pigboy, you had the right spot, but it's not Vine there - Vine is the next block east (Short Vine). Thanks to you and moonloop! And here's confirmation - the houses that are visible at 26 seconds into the movie: 2930 Jefferson: 2926 Jefferson:

^Maybe I should rethink my objections to Cincinnati putting its jail in Broadway Commons...brings in the residents!
