Suburbanites: what would draw you downtown?
GoTribe: I definitely see that - I work in Blue Ash, and I never go back up north for dinner, even though there are some nice places to eat in Montgomery and Blue Ash and Kenwood and all...I've only ever eaten there on the weekends when I haven't already been up there all damn day...

Cincinnati: Walnut Hills: Emery Village
Here are the buildings involved: 2202 Gilbert: 2204 Gilbert: 2208 Gilbert: 2210 Gilbert: 2212 Gilbert: 2220 Gilbert: If you look at the map Grasscat linked to, it's every lot in that triangle except the property that abuts only Nassau, where Andy's Mediterranean is. Could be exciting, and I wouldn't care either way about the three blue houses, but the pink one rocks, and the brick ones would be missed...I'd assume it will be all housing, since those places just down the hill are going for way more than I'd have expected, but I'd love to see another restaurant go in there...

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Michael - I don't think the eventual occupation of today's drug dealers is the issue - they're probably a lost cause, or else will have to be helped on a case-by-case basis. The idea is to stop tomorrow's drug dealer from ever embarking on the career.

Suburbanites: what would draw you downtown?
Great idea for a thread... I'm in the city now, but grew up in a far suburbs of Cleveland (Hinckley), so maybe I count a little! I'd add a category to your list: Visiting friends/relatives I'd say that was my #1 draw to the city, followed by seeing the Indians. As for the rest of your list - but answering what did draw me (and my family) downtown, not what would today: Shopping - never...I didn't shop much, and when I did it was the nearby malls. Dining - I didn't then, since I didn't have any money (though now my parents and my wife and I go somewhere nice in the city when we come to town). Museums - Very infrequently. I spent most of my Art Museum time when I went to Case. Theater - More the orchestra, but again, rather infrequently. Special events (festivals, etc.) - We never really went to these - if we did, they were Medina County events. Parks and recreation - No, only to local parks. Landmarks - Nope.

Ohio: Foreclosure News & Info
A couple points, commenting mostly on the first article: 8% is called a high interest rate? What? Does this guy not remember any of the years between, oh, 1973 and 2001? 8% is not a "high" rate, it's actually lower than anyone's mortgage rate up until the late 90's. Sure, it's higher than other folks are paying, but it's still a rate the best debtors in the country couldn't have dreamed of just 10 years ago. "Ohio leads the nation, by far, in the rate at which subprime borrowers fall behind and lose their houses. Nearly 10 percent were in foreclosure between July and September..." Another way to put that is, "10% of Ohio's subprime borrowers lost homes they never would have had in the first place were it not for the opportunity presented by subprime lenders." Or yet another way to put that is, "90% of Ohio's subprime borrowers were able to purchase a house and restore their credit rating, opening the door to refinancing at lower rates, while they built equity in their only major investment - an opportunity they never would have had in past years." Yes, people over-borrow; lenders sometimes care more about squeezing money out of folks, rather than making a good business deal, one that benefits both the customer and the lender. And prepayment penalties are nonsense, and I'd support outlawing them. But what is the solution? If you force these lenders to give bad credit risk customers the same rates they give good credit risks, then they'll just walk away - you can't force them to lose money. Outlaw subprime lending, and the only possible result will be to shut the working poor out of home ownership. That's an AWFUL solution. My answer? Expand the market, and educate the consumers. The more competition there is, the less able a company will be to gouge customers. Subprime lending has been a godsend for most of its customers and the communities they live in. But folks seem shocked that high credit-risk customers sometimes can't pay their bills - that just baffles me...

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
A couple points - the Maisonette closing had nothing to do with people not eating there, it was an issue of family members buying each other out and debts and divorce and all kinds of stuff - but the issue had nothing to do with how many people came in to eat. And you said parking downtown is a nightmare - please, compared to what? Compared to Fairfield, I completely agree - but compared with any other downtown, you're not even close. There's always something on the street within a few blocks, or there are garages nearby. I've never had trouble finding parking, during business hours, during special events, during any time at all, except for Labor Day fireworks.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm more of a legalize it kind of guy, but until we decide to do so as a nation, Cincinnati needs to fight tooth and nail against crimes that victimize innocent folks - and open air drug dealing does exactly that. Just my opinion... Just a question, Quimbob - you said, "Prohibition has failed twice before" - which was the second time? I know about the 18th Amendment, but don't know what the other time you're referring to is...

Cincinnati: Findlay Market
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI ate at Amaretto's once, but haven't been to Bella Luna - that is in the same spot as Amaretto's was, isn't it? I'll definitely be at Findlay Market before I get out to Bella Luna, so this will be a nice preview! And a nice place to add to the mix - up-scale restaurant (albeit an outlet version) near a person selling wildflowers on a card table...that's beautiful!

Zillow.com - Real Estate Valuation Tool
I checked my house and it shows a wacky value history - a huge peak around 2000 or so, then a dip, weird stuff...not related to 9/11, not related to the riots, so I don't know what the story was...couldn't get it to come up on my wife's mac or I'd be more specific...

Cincinnati: Walnut Hills - The Overlook at Eden Park
So I checked the MLS on these at the end of last month, and found only two units listed, both Sale Pending, so I emailed Chip Hunter to ask him about it: Chips answer: ...they're not on the MLS yet...I did see someone over at the temporary construction office stuff yesterday afternoon, locking up the gate...

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
St. James at the Park on Alpine, the Edgecliff on Victory Parkway at the S-curve, and Edgecliff Point, back off what is it, Upland? Then they're building the Overlook at Eden Park on Luray. Might not be "highrises" - I don't know when something goes from "midrise" to "highrise", but they're all 14+ stories, all overlooking the park...

Cincinnati: Downtown: Smale Riverfront Park
Ink: ^I think there is a lack of a connection with anything and Eden. What in the hell are you talking about? Mt. Adams? The Art Museum? The Conservatory? Playhouse in the Park? Tons of residential up Fulton and Sinton and St. James and Alpine and Luray? Tons of folks walking from Walnut Hills to the park every day? Three high-rise residential buildings overlooking the park (soon to be four)? Bikers, joggers, roller-bladers, dog-walkers? The overlooks are packed to the gills any nice day...they had to put in special traffic control rules on Sundays in the summer because so many people would pack in and cruise for parking. Eden Park used by tons of people, is in a fantastic location, very convenient from about everywhere...I have no idea where this meme came from...
