Ohio River is Rising...
The recent rains are predicted to push the river to its highest gage since last April: http://www.riverwatch.noaa.gov/forecasts/ILNRVDILN.shtml CCNO1:CINCINNATI 52: 31.1/: 1.1: 35.6 / 38.0 / 40.6 / 43.0 SAT PM Something new - this report gives station, flood stage (52), 7am stage (31.1), change since yesterday's 7am stage (1.1), then three days of predictions - 7am tomorrow (35.6), 7am Thursday (38.0) and 7am Friday (40.6) - but this is the first time I've noticed the addition to the end: "43.0 SAT PM". That's the currently predicted Crest, and the predicted day and time of the crest. I've noticed for a while now that the 3-days out predictions seem to overstate things most every time, so we'll see how this one stacks up - but again, a nice full basin with brown water and swift-moving flotsam and jetsam awaits us Saturday!

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
So here's the Reds blogs I've been following, in pretty much this order: Marc Lancaster, reporter for the Cincinnati Post: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/spring/ Redleg Nation, a group blog: http://www.redlegnation.com/ (the current post is a fantastic first in a series on Reds ownership/management history, reaching back to the 30's) JD Arney's blog: http://www.redreporter.com/ Shawn Weaver's blog: http://shawns.blogspot.com/ At least now, with about a post per day (maybe two or three tops), it's easy to follow, along with the Post's coverage: http://www.cincypost.com/reds/ Anyone else have a favorite Reds site? Anyone here write one? What indispensable Reds sites am I missing?

Yeah, I didn't get that call...but I do know that Polamalu (sp?) needs to learn to STOP SCREWING UP when he intercepts a pass...that moronic lateral against us last week, then fumbling this week... Go Denver. (man, it hurts to type that, after growing up watching Kosar for all those years)

Riverview East Academy
^Yeah, it was packed. They've got parking under the main building, plus a large lot immediately east of the building, and when I got there at around 5:40 or so it looked like the mall on the Saturday before Christmas...I spent an hour there, by which time the parking lot had probably half emptied, but it was still awfully busy inside. Very nice to see.

Riverview East Academy
Not sure if this should go here, or just be in the Cincinnati Public Schools thread...if it ought to move, please feel free... Anyway, Riverview East Academy held an Open House on Thursday, January 12th. Grasscat had hoped to go but couldn't and PigBoy wanted to go but was too hurried in his last day in Ohio (which I trust will result in a photo thread!), so it ended up being a mini-UrbanOhio meet consisting of...me! More like a nano-meet... Anyway, Grasscat wins...my first impression was that it was semi trailers on stilts - looked like storage units or something. Grasscat said it looked interesting, and after following the construction and now touring the facilities, he was right - it's really very cool. First, some orienting - the red circle in the lower shot is where the building is located. Actually, that's not quite accurate - the building is in the field immediately north-east of the circle. Those trees are still there: And a diagram, showing where things are. This is unfortunately oriented with north to the bottom of the picture. Anyway, here's the key: Blue Circle: Common areas, including the "Cafetorium", music classrooms, after school programs, some community programs, the gymnasium, offices and library (er...sorry, "media center"). Red Circle: Classroom Suites (my term not theirs). Green Square: This outlines a Classroom Suite (actually two, one per floor), which consists of four classrooms (Yellow Squares) surrounding one common area (Orange Square). The common area contains play space, a sink and a bathroom for the young kids, and lockers and a bathroom for the older kids. Also, there are big-ass TV's on the ceilings in all the common rooms, and in some of the classrooms. Light Blue Line: Points to the Library. Bright Green Line: Points to the main entrance. Now, without further ado...approaching from the east: Parking underneath the building: Looking west - the Library is above, classrooms in the distance: Classrooms - the ones facing the river: Cafetorium: One of the music rooms: Gymnasium: The Bengals donated a boatload of weightlifting equipment that will go up in the open area visible in the previous shot. It's not there yet, but here's the view from that space: Offices: The Computer Lab (part of the Media Center): The Spanish teacher, who was leading my tour, showing us the Library...they haven't unpacked the books yet! Library, from the windows looking back: An elementary classroom: Elementary common area, and two other classrooms: Sink, bathroom and TV...no more faking having to go to the bathroom then running around the hallways... First floor hallway...it's not as dark as this shot makes it look - it was flash = dark or no flash = blurry...should have brought my tripod... An older-kid common area - lockers, with the bathroom blocked from view: The Spanish classroom: There isn't a single chalkboard in the building (from what I was told, at least) - it's all whiteboards: This was one of my questions - what the hell do you do during a tornado? You get on the ground floor and you'll be outside! He said the plan is to get in the first floor hallway...I'm sure the inspectors know what they're doing, but still, I hope we never have to test their best judgements here...anyway, here's the first and tornado plan: The second floor connector hallway between the classroom suites and the main building: Overlooking the main entrance area from the second floor hallway: The art room: Computers were everywhere... Finally, here's a view out one of the portal windows from between the classroom suites...you can't see the river from the first floor, as far as I could tell, but you could from the second floor. Probably not when the leaves are out, but for a large part of the school year you can...hard to get a shot in the dark, but in this you can see two lights from across the river reflected in the surface: It's a great building, truly...always interesting, extremely well designed for teaching and for keeping track of kids...everything's open and light and airy, windows open, they've got technology, and all the staff and the kids were very nice and welcoming...I had a great time, and was very happy about how they're spending my money!

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment...just went there for dinner tonight...actually, we had drinks, three appetizers and one entre between the four of us. I always loved that place - great seafood, plus a flawless view...I was walking with a friend around Sawyer Point et al, and saw the sign on the building - I thought, "are they open again? I don't remember a sign there before..." Then we saw a billboard a week or so later, and after some googling found out it was open again... Anyway, the clam chowder is as stellar as it ever was...shrimp bignet (sp?) was fantastic...I didn't try the fish entree or the oysters, but everyone raved...it's pricey (unless you do the appetizer-based deal like we did), but it's truly worth it, unlike some other places I could name (Celestial)...

The Steps of Cincinnati
Wow - thanks for labelling them! Ask and ye shall receive! Well, as you come across them in further treks, I know I'd love to see new discoveries added to these sets...oh, and let me toss in a few as well: The steps between the Art Museum and the Elsinore Towers - this was closed, but I broke the law: Then these three are from the set between Elsinore and the end of Ida where that huge tree with the branches leaning on the ground is - also closed down, and for obvious reasons: And finally, these steps are behind the WW I Memorial in Eden Park, and connect the lower overlook to the upper overlook:

That's fantastic...thank you! Say, any chance you can label them? I recognize some of them, and a few have signs, but some I don't know...

What Kind of American English Do You Speak?
I use "highway" as specifically limited-access roads as well - probably in part because the difference between a county road and a state highway, at least where I grew up, is basically non-existent. If you were set down on River Road in Hinckley, the only way you could tell it was State Route 94 would be with a road sign...so if someone said, "take the highway," it always meant "take 71" or "take 77" or such...and if the Cincinnati traffic report says "the highway is backed up to Ridge," I assume they mean 71, not Montgomery Road...I know it's a misuse of the term, but that's my colloquial...
