  1. Was curious what others' thoughts were regarding the new terrazo floor on Concourse C. Although I'm generally pro-terrazo flooring in airports, I think the Hopkins re-do looks pretty pathetic. The design and color scheme just seem really dated and cheap looking. Other airports have done a much better job. I'm thinking of Reagan in D.C. and Denver in particular.
  2. Same here. I go to Sergios and L'Albatros pretty regularly for dinner or drinks and never once have had trouble finding a spot on the street. I always laugh at the surburbanites who pay to valet. Same thing happens in Ohio City.
  3. Praise Jesus (so long as it's not for more surface parking)
  4. If they had to leave downtown, at least they could have built something moderately attractive. This building is a joke.
  5. Is the May Company Building a designated landmark, and if so, would the Landmarks Commission have any say here on removal of the glass? The more I think about this project, the more upset I become.
  6. I can't tell from the schematics, but are they taking the glass out of the windows on the Euclid side? That would be a travesty.
  7. I think Security Federal was already rehabbed a while back. As I recall, it's the two story building next door to the Truman Bldg. The dentist that used to be in the Schofield building moved into the second floor a while back. There used to be a First Merit on the first floor. Not sure what's happening with that space.
  8. I think he's asking about the Truman Building, which is being renovated in connection with the Schofield Building project. I think we have a separate thread for Truman.
  9. Anyone else notice the new jumbo-sized digital signage installed in front of Epworth Church? How the heck did that monstrosity get approved? :whip:
  10. “We're committed to Cleveland,” Mr. Mandel said. “We are pleased to make a fine investment in downtown Cleveland as opposed to the suburbs.” If only more people (e.g., Ferro and Eaton execs) thought this way, downtown would be the most amazing place. Thank you Mr. Mandel for your foresight and commitment to the urban core.
  11. It's probably time to commission another lakefront study. :-)
  12. Glover also said Phase II is definitely happening, although he didn't indicate a time frame.
  13. So true. That complex is a whore show. Just when you thought South Euclid couldn't sink any lower....
  14. Possible signs of progress: 1. On my walk through the Statler parking garage today, I noticed a new sign on the glass door that leads from the Statler garage into the building next door that is slated to be the garage entrance for the JHB project. The sign states something to the effect of: "The building has been sold. Any cars parked in this area will be towed." 2. A large van was parked on the sidewalk in front of the building closest to the Statler. Two workers were inside the building hanging large sheets of plywood. Here's hoping something is finally happening on this moribund stretch of Euclid.
  15. Not to mention decimated by the salt spray from Euclid Avenue come winter.
  16. The original post wasn't mine actually. But in any event, it seems you're still upset even with knowledge that the Clinic isn't planning to utilize any space downtown, but rather, an empty theatre complex abutting its main campus. While the Play House facility may well be an excellent theatre venue, I don't really think there is much need for yet more theatre space in this town. We already have plenty between all the theatres downtown, Karamu, Beck, and Dobama. And no other theatre company seems to be knocking on the door. Indeed, the Play House is abandoning the complex because it is simply too big and too much of a drain on their budget sheet. Frankly, the idea of having the Play House stuck in the dead zone between University Circle and downtown never made that much sense, and certainly led to a fair amount of confusion as to the difference between the Play House and Playhouse Square (as evidenced by your earlier post). The Clinic's anticipated adaptive reuse really seems to the best of what are undoubtedly limited options for the venue.
  17. lafont, Welcome to Cleveland. The "Playhouse" is a theatre complex located between Carnegie and Euclid near E. 82nd, abutting the Cleveland Clinic's main campus. It also currently houses the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art ("MOCA"). "Playhouse Square" is the nation's second largest theatre district located in downtown Cleveland on Euclid Ave. between E. 18th and E.13th. The Playhouse sold its building to the Cleveland Clinic about a year ago, and is moving to Playhouse Square downtown. MOCA is leaving the Playhouse next year to move into its new building currently being constructed at the corner of Mayfield and Euclid at University Circle. Once the complex is completely emptied, it is widely expected that the Clinic will move its medical school (the Lerner College of Medicine) to the Playhouse facility it now owns. The Clinic owns nothing at Playhouse Square and has no intention of occupying any space in downtown's theatre district. The Lerner College of Medicine was formed a few years back as a joint venture between the Clinic and Case Western. It is a niche medical school that focuses on educating physician researchers.
  18. South Euclid is also to blame here. They are so desperate for any development that they'll approve anything. I have to say I don't think there is a single redeeming commercial structure in that entire town. Just take a look at the main drags along Mayfield, Cedar, and Monticello. All junk.
  19. The GFS is a tragedy. What on earth was South Euclid thinking letting them build that thing so far back from Cedar?!?!?! What a missed opportunity to create some better density.
  20. Scafidi is hardly Savile Row calibre. I've had a few suits altered there, all with disappointing results. Never again.
  21. I think the 20% occupancy rate is based off the total number of rooms in the hotel (including the unuseable ones). 100/470 = 21%. So they're probably filling up most the 100 available rooms, but that obviously is not enough to be turning any kind of profit, given that 370 rooms are sitting there empty.
  22. I'd like to see the Soldiers and Sailors monument opened up to the rest of the plaza more, with pavers going all the way up to the base. The current landscaping seems to make the monument feel somewhat inaccessible.
  23. I'm so glad Crain's is taking on this knuckle-head. When people talk about the leadership deficit in this town, Johnson is case in point.
  24. Agreed. For all of Toby Cosgrove's talk about urban planning and design, the application has been altogether absent.
  25. Are you kidding me? The Clinic doesn't have enough vacant lots already? Let's hope this travesty can be averted. :whip: Cleveland Area History reports that the congregation of the Euclid Avenue Church of God in Cleveland "has been offered an unspecified sum by the Cleveland Clinic in return for demolishing the structure, a Cleveland Landmark, and providing the Clinic with a vacant lot." http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2011/02/threatened-euclid-avenue-church-of-god.html
