  1. The underground parking garage does not extend to below the foundation of the old Freiberger library.
  2. The problem with evergreens is the salt spray in winter; it burns the needles and pretty much kills the tree.
  3. The Hessler folks are notoriously anti-development. They've opposed just about every Case development project that remotely approached the street, including the Peter Lewis (Gehry) building, the George Dively (Weatherhead's executive education) building, and every attempted development of the vacant parking lot at 4th and Euclid.
  4. Hopefully they had insurance and can rebuild on location. I've always liked that stretch of Euclid; the contrast between the modern Clinic buildings and the historic churces provides some great urban fabric.
  5. There's a full dumpster in front of the Truman Building today, and construction lighting has been rigged up on the first floor. Looks like the owner is starting to demolish the interior.
  6. Walked by the Wyse space last night around 7 pm. The interior barns fit in well with the Cadillac Ranch down the street.

I miss you Banana Republic. :-(
  8. I'm glad this project is going forward, but still have a lot of reservations. Phase I just doesn't seem big enough to support any businesses that may open as part of the project. Moreover, Ernst & Young and Tucker's move is going to leave quite a void in the Central Business District, particularly coming on top of all the NatCity layoffs. (I work in the NatCity Tower at 9th and Euclid, and trust me, there isn't much of a wait for an elevator in the morning anymore). Here's hoping Phase II happens sooner rather than later. :-)
  9. lafont -- why don't you relax and allow the construction to progress. rome wasn't built in a day.
  10. I noticed this morning on the drive in to downtown that they have started working on the Tudor Arms building at Carnegie and 105th. Looks like they are tuckpointing and cleaning the stone on the eastern facade. It's cleaning up very nicely. I was surprised, however, to see work being done. I know that the Marons had bought the building with plans to convert it to a hotel, but hadn't heard that any kind of renovation was imminent. Anyone have any inside info?
  11. MayDay, great pics, but you're supposed to put dimes on Rockefeller's grave, not quarters. "John D. Rockefeller died in 1937, just months shy of his 98th birthday. The man who started his career in Northeast Ohio and who helped to fund so many Cleveland institutions returned to Cleveland to be buried at Lake View Cemetery under a simple obelisk. Following his habit of giving dimes to the poor, visitors to Lake View place dimes on his grave in hopes of gaining Rockefeller-like wealth."
  12. Well, I knew it was too much to ask to have Euclid not under construction for more than a few months. There's a whole gaggle of construction workers tearing up the car lane of Euclid this morning just east of East 9th. Anyone know what that's all about?
  13. The law firm Cavitch Familo was apparently the last tenant in the building. I'm told they moved out because the new owner wasn't doing anything to keep the building up and has no plans whatsoever to renovate the building. The problem with the building attracting tenants is that the floorplan is just too small, and everything is outdated.
  14. Agreed. With construction costs coming down as much as they have, doesn't it make sense to reevaluate whether the MVRDV design is now possible?
  15. Anybody have access to the article in this week's Crain's regarding the Clinic's development plans. The on-line caption indicates the Clinic is planning $2.3 billion in capital expenditures for 2009-2013.

    My chocolate lab, Molly.
  17. Anybody know what might be going on at the Truman Building? I noticed scaffolding was erected along the sidewalk in front of the building over the weekend.
  18. I can definitely appreciate more street traffic and wish we had more, but 14 minutes to drive one block is nuts, especially when you have an appointment to get to.
  19. Anybody else notice how bad the traffic has been at rush hour now that you can't turn right on red at E.14th Street to head south towards the freeway? It took me 14 minutes last night just to go from E.12 to E.13. I really hope the traffic engineers reverse that brilliant decision soon.
  20. It's not natural gas you're smelling. It's sewer gas.
