  1. This website is a good place to start. Lots of information about the Brewery District's history, and also about some development plans. http://www.otrbrewerydistrict.org/
  2. Yes, I noticed that too. By the way, this building has become very nice-looking since the awful fire escape and awning were removed. Funny how a few easy fixes can transform a building. I am a bit obsessed about hidden Cincinnati stuff, so obviously I have a picture of this sign . The quality of the shot is not that great, but you can see most of the hidden sign on this picture. The full text is "Dunlap Clothes Shop" and "Hart Schaffner & Marx Clothes". It almost seems like those were two separate signs used at different points in time. Does anyone know something about the store(s)?
  3. Nice set of pictures, as always! The Gateway Quarter in OTR looks spectacular.
  4. Here is another example of hidden history. Earlier in the 20th century (not sure what the exact date is), streets east of Main Street in OTR had names instead of numbers. This is one of a few places I have found where the original name still shows, engraved in a building: 12th Street used to be Abigail Street. This name change is not related to other name changes during the anti-German histeria of 1918.
  5. Here is the Clyffside Brewery sometime in the 1930s. Same building in late 2007. The house that used to be on its right side belonged to the owner; it was razed when the brewery was expanded. The building on the left side is the same as on the old picture, but it has been raised and its facade altered.
  6. If I remember correctly, that's just the top of the staircase leading to the roof deck.
  7. Here is a new thread where you can post pictures of your city (building, street, whatever) today, and back in the days. Feel free to use a drawing / postcard instead of a picture if necessary. This is a drawing of the office building where I work in downtown Cincinnati, back when it was the Crown Overall Manufacturing Company Building... making overalls for slaughterhouses in Cincinnati. Same building today, now producing services instead of goods, and with a 3-story addition on the top.
  8. What these folks are doing is admirable and it shows the development that is bound to happen when the streetcar comes. FYI, here is a picture of the two Chritian Moerlein Buildings the article refers to.
  9. It's great to see those ugly buildings gone, and the new construction will give more options for people considering moving into OTR. I think it would be great to organize a "clean up" day on Vine Street in the Spring involving both local OTR folks and people from other communities.
  10. I just got my tickets! Never had a chance to go before, so I'm really excited. I can't wait to see the Kauffman Brewery's tunnels!
  11. Here are some of my favorites: Massachussetts Avenue, Indianapolis Reading Road in Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati: McMicken Avenue, OTR, Cincinnati Race Street, OTR, Cincinnati
  12. "The Bicentennial Guide to Cincinnati" and "Cincinnati Observed" are both very good. They are available at the public library, at the Ohio Bookstore downtown, and of course online as well.
  13. What about the construction in the Otte Building? (Next to McAlpin, corner of 4th and Race). Anyone knows what's coming there?
  14. It was Columbus all right - it just started snowing and got very hilly when he took that shot
  15. IMO, the development of the riverfront is a big part of a city's character. Columbus is really far behind many other cities in this area, even though there have been a few good attempts (North Bank Park).
  16. I have explored very little of West End so far, but it appears to be a treasure chest for ghost signs. Here is one I captured:
  17. I just joined. I'm not used to geotagging my pictures, but I think it makes sense for this group.
  18. I wonder how many of those signs are still standing. I didn't see one on Republic, but there is a large history marker at Findlay Market that lists many of the streets that were renamed. Here is the list of renamed streets that I know of: German Street to English Street, Bismark Street to Montreal Street, Berlin Street to Woodrow Street, Bremen Street to Republic Street, Brunswick Street to Edgecliff Point, Frankfort Street to Connecticut Avenue, Hamburg Street to Stonewall Street, Hanover Street to Yukon Street, Hapsburg Street to Merrimac Street, Schumann Street to Meredith Street, Vienna Street to Panama Street, and Humboldt Street to Taft Road.
  19. I took a couple of shots of the Belmont Cafe sign when I found out the building was going to be torn down.
  20. Here are a few more pictures showing Cincinnati's hidden history in Over-the-Rhine. This is a picture of the top of the former office of the Christian Moerlein Brewery at 2019 Elm Street (built in 1878, expanded in 1904). The word "office" is easy to spot; the word "Moerlein" is barely visible below. This next two shots show Stonewall Street, right next to Clyffside Brewery off McMicken. Prior to the anti-German hysteria of 1918, this street was called Hamburg, as the sign indicates. It is the only street I have seen in Cincinnati that has such a sign. Finally, here is a shot taken at the corner of Republic and Fifteenth. The original name of Republic Street - Bremen - can still be seen engraved in the building. This is the only place in Cincinnati where I have seen the original German name of a street that was renamed in 1918 because of the anti-German histeria.
  21. Dubai? Do you know what he plans on doing there? Did he buy one of those country-shaped islands? And who is the new owner of Metal Blast?
  22. Does anyone know something about what's going on with the Jackson Brewery / Metal Blast Building? I heard that Denny Dellinger (owner of the building) is no longer in Cincinnati.
  23. I love the dining options downtown, but I couldn't agree more about the lack of shopping options. With the amount of foot traffic it is now getting, isn't Fountain Square ready for a few nice stores?
  24. So both of you are getting a place downtown, right? :-) I hope so... Welcome to Cincinnati!
  25. What a great thread! I've had so much fun reading it. Not sure if anyone is interested in resuming it, but I have a few pictures I wanted to share. The Clyffside Brewery on McMicken: hops shovel, sifter, and barrel ends. Christian Moerlein stable (down Henry Street, just past Dunlap) Sign on Vine Street sidewalk in OTR - Long-gone flower shop?
