Thanks all for the compliments. I would like to keep this little exercise somewhat realistic, which will help keep the topic relevant. I could put an orange blob on every vacant parcel in the basin, but it wouldn't mean very much. For what it's worth, I think there is potential for some mid-rise residential north of Central Parkway, but not in the immediate future. We could model it, but Google Earth level of detail is more meaningful at the skyline or corridor level, not at the individual building level. There's just not that much detail yet in Google Earth. I will take up Prok's idea for something "crown-y" at FSW.
  2. There is now a new thread for Cincinnati Google Earth models. Enjoy! http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23513.0.html

I'm going to create a separate thread for this because it's hijacking QCS. Here is the last one you'll get for a bit. Every open parcel or building pad in the immediate CBD with a reasonable height limit, plus The Banks. Inspired by a (now infamous) WIRED Magazine graphic of Miami. I'd like to eventually model every blob, so any suggestions or inspiration would be welcome.
  4. Sears Tower at Fountain Square West: OK, that's all the requests I'm taking for now. Time to work on a model for The Banks.
  5. Even if the first of these three asertions were true given the cirumstances, and you're probably right, the last two are absurd. If the Streetcar induces a higher OTR population, and that population drives less than they would compared to their alternative - which in Cincinnati's case would be more suburban- then it is inevitable that air pollution and dependence on any oil goes down.
  6. Well, you've got to be careful what you ask for. There are a handful of spots downtown where a tower would be probable: Third and Vine, Fifth and Race, Fountain Square West (Fifth and Vine). If you get height-happy and call for a 700+ or 800+ now that we have a 600+, the rest of Cincinnati's buildings start looking odd. Because they aren't very big. Here's the same model brought down 50 feet (to 700 even) and flipped. Better, but still making all but QCS look like midgets. Just for shits and giggles, let's take the tallest in another medium-large skyline, Seattle's 945 footer, and put it at Fountain Square West: Cincinnati now looks ridiculous, even when you put the building in the center of downtown.
  7. There is no problem with his assertion. All things being equal, a streetcar reduces congestion. You could indeed make all kinds of problems for his assertion by stipulating various circumstances. Some may certainly be true.
  8. I was bored, and this model inspired me. So I plopped a 700 footer at Third and Vine.

What the what? How is this possible? It looks like it would be 25% of any system's needs, not a direct dollar amount, which means there would be no disproportionate burden on rural counties.
  10. That's an awesome picture Sherman. Too bad the Enquirer doesn't just contract you to do photog for their development stories.
  11. ^ If it means bringing the city to life, I'll take it.
  12. I love how Joe Deters alludes to this law firm bringing in county money and being accountable to nobody, when the man has been nothing but a local career politician since he graduated from his local high school and went to his local college and then his local law school. That's a dynamic, efficient businessman if I've ever seen one. Oh and look, COAST is involved in this whole thing, too. What a surprise.
  13. Ultimately tunnels will be needed for any fixed transit solution for Cincinnati. This whole "which hill do we trudge up" conversation is small potatoes in the long run.
  14. Since Caseyc watches it all day long and it doesn't sound like anyone else here is in that position, maybe he could take a little tally? Either way, nothing we can do about it now. I would assume that if there were significant truck traffic the patrons of the new park will notice and they'll re-route them.
  15. Cincinnati is a powerhouse when it comes to branding and consumer products. It also has a disproportionately large local restaurant and food scene that many residents assume exist in all 2-Million metros, but that's really not true. Except for maybe one national signature chain to bring in the tourists at first, I think The Banks restaurant and entertainment lineup could go all homegrown. And get away with it. An example: Chi-nnati's Pizza. It's not the best deep dish I've ever had by a long shot, but it's decent, and they have a great atmosphere. It's just buried in Kenwood and could totally fill up with the post-event crowd at The Banks.
  16. Re-posted for Unusualfire from the Cincinnati Streetcar thread: Don't let the Enquirer pick this up. http://clackamas.katu.com/content/sheriff-blames-crime-increase-max-line

  18. ^ The resemblance is kind of creepy.
  19. I dunno man. When you're shooting blanks you never run out of ammo.
  20. That interview was epic. Love it.
  21. It's turned out about as well as one could have hoped. Very nice.
  22. ^You are correct. I looked it up and its from 1/11/10.
