  1. Exceptional: A massive conglomeration of human activity. Buildings break the horizon in all directions and at far distances. Multiple buildings taller than 500 feet. More than one skyline cluster. New York, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto Large: A visually stunning collection of large buildings that is too large to be assessed instantly from one vantage point and appears impenetrable. At least one perspective shows buildings at near and far distances simultaneously. Usually displays tall buildings with a strong low-to-mid-rise fabric. More than one building over 500 feet. Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle, Calgary Medium: A collection of buildings with a distinct skyline. At least one vantage point shows an impenetrable core of buildings. At least one building over 300 feet. Can be quickly assessed from one vantage point. Usually has tall buildings or a strong low-to-mid-rise fabric, but not both. Outlier buildings or long views are rare. Indianapolis, Orlando, Charlotte, Columbus, Dayton, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Austin Small: An urban core that is easily identifiable and breaks the natural horizon from some reasonable vantage point. Buildings rarely over 300 feet. Very common and highly variable in size. Canton, West Palm Beach, Madison, Lexington, Worcester, Topeka, Savannah
  2. Oh god he forgot Dayton. Kiss your forum access goodbye motherfucker!
  3. After coming back through Cincinnati via northbound I-75 yesterday evening from Atlanta, I have the following pronouncement: By the powers granted to me by the American Planning Association, I declare entirely arbitrarily and through no scientific or verifiable method, that the Urban Core of Cincinnati, Ohio be moved from "Class 3: Medium" to "Class 2: Large" on the Civvikian Urban Core Impression Index. The Index is summarized as follows: Class 1: Exceptional http://theorniphile.info/chicago_skyline_wallpaper/chicago_skyline.jpg Class 2: Large http://gettingbacktothepoint.com/graphics/photos/relocation_1.jpg Class 3: Medium http://farm1.static.flickr.com/139/395997389_3d9f929134.jpg Class 4: Small http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DowntownMaconGa.jpg

I am rather conservative, but: -OLED will replace LCD -Hydrogen cells will begin to become commercially available, powering things like laptops, cars, small vehicles -Photovoltaic paints allow passive power generation on any surface -USA, Europe or Korea will achieve a sustained Fusion reaction -Most media, including video games, books, magazines and movies, will be distributed online -CPU's and GPU's will re-integrate -Persistent, Massively Multiplayer games will be a common past-time and exist in enormously complex virtual worlds -Researchers currently simulating parts of small mammal brains cell-by-cell will achieve a quasi-conscious AI -Nanotechnology and cell biology begin to converge, medicine becomes increasingly personalized -Exotic materials, such as light-bending cloth, are a major driver of research and industry -India's population stabilizes, Africa becomes a major breadbasket and raw materials supplier for Asia -Climate change continues unabated, as does the destruction of the Brazilian and African rainforests -There are more Chinese in space than Americans, Russians or Europeans

  6. I wish Lavo was doing this to draw more people to the Gateway, but what I've heard from several people is they are simply trying to run Senate out of businesses before they can start up. The more casual, lower priced, street food concept seems to be exactly what Senate is about. I believe Lavo has even started doing a gourmet hot dog happy hour, which is certainly a direct steal from Senate. If true, I'm incredibly disappointed. I've heard the same

Very cool. Love the look of lighted storefronts on snowy nights.

Completely random Street View neighborhood drops in Cincinnati and Cleveland: West Cincinnati: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=39.153142,-84.619877&spn=0,359.777012&t=h&z=13&layer=c&cbll=39.152862,-84.619915&panoid=SRhEXphQjgiawtw9v7cDiQ&cbp=12,224.32,,0,7.91 Central Cincinnati: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=39.17186,-84.45611&spn=0,359.944253&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=39.174758,-84.463022&panoid=j3VjUCk38n6EISyZ31XkSQ&cbp=12,232.38,,0,1.05 East Cincinnati: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=39.140413,-84.415727&spn=0,359.944253&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=39.142158,-84.428&panoid=tioCJvam7kNKk67pse5iYg&cbp=12,316.18,,0,8.26 West Cleveland: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.479221,-81.785383&spn=0,359.777012&t=h&z=13&layer=c&cbll=41.47941,-81.785353&panoid=PFxcftl0vKM_L3AN5PAecA&cbp=12,40.85,,0,10.13 Central Cleveland: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.432624,-81.623697&spn=0,359.888506&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=41.432324,-81.623729&panoid=6NHIXjGUmIihizP-VnPt8A&cbp=12,179.63,,0,5.35 East Cleveland: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.521495,-81.587477&spn=0,359.888506&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=41.528485,-81.600213&panoid=D4Khb_JzHbn0H8jofs-0_Q&cbp=12,47.16,,0,-0.27 I just looked for patches of neighborhood on the satellite view that were a medium distance from thoroghfares. I have never been to any of these streets. To me, they look...like neighborhoods. They could be anywhere, and they are not dirty or falling apart. Impressions of places from an interstate are pretty shallow, but that is indeed the only impression a lot of people see of a city. Imagine if our interstates turned into boulevards when they crossed over the beltways, and we invested the same maintenance dollars into them. THEN what would the impression of our cities be?
  12. I don't want to turn this into Enquirer bashing, but you'd think that their "ambulance-chaser content" philosophy would include this very headline-y Chris Henry story. Right now the photo headline is some story about the Ten Commandments. Do they really think the majority of the metro cares about this? This isn't Infowars.
  13. ^That is true to an extent, but really it's more a function of land costs and corporate ego. Bank of America is no exception (they have their Cesar Pelli e-peen), BUT their back offices in Charlotte are in an enormous mixed use development on the west side of downtown that is only 7 stories. It's pretty cool, feels kind of European. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=35.233553,-80.849515&spn=0,359.993032&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=35.232966,-80.849825&panoid=QHRDVlos-rJsWIeQUzlD3g&cbp=12,335.74,,0,-12.04 This is exactly the kind of thing that would look nice in those Broadway parking lots.
  14. Gotta love how this is on the front webpage of ESPN, NBC, CNN and Fox. But not the good ol' Enquirer!
  15. ^What does that mean? If they line up the funding, then it would be imprudent to NOT anticipate a streetcar.
  16. I have worked on a few one-way conversions (turning one-way pairs back into two-way streets.) Usually they were in small or medium sized towns, and the one-way pair was hindering commercial activity in downtowns.
  17. A garage is certainly better than lots. I just hope (because I have no idea) that once we get the streetcar established that there is some plan to slowly take some of those lots offline and build on them. That's all I'm concerned about. That all depends on how lending institutions view the streetcar. In cities with LRT or better, they usually view new development within a certain radius of a stop as "transit oriented" and will lend to projects with lower parking ratios. That usually leads to things getting built on parking lots.
  18. Oh god where could we go with this... YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
  19. Yeah man, I don't think these developers are so unsophisticated that they wouldn't know how to activate Vine Street. Good idea to make sure you're familiar with the whole plan before you criticize! The 3CDC site plans are pretty easy to find. Now the back of the Southshore Tower...THAT is something to criticize.
  20. What's wrong with the parking garage?

Because urbanists don't like back yards?

The Gap Cheerleaders aren't the folks who deserve a FAIL! Sweetie, I'm sorry to say this, but I need you're gay card. [glow=red,2,300]Immediately![/glow] We'll also need to deprogram you and put you on the FAIL/DIDN'T STICK (PUN INTENDED) list. You will also need to relocate from sector 2478254. It's a privileged be gay and I don't think you have what it takes to be apart of such an elite society. Atlas will be in touch! Thanks for all your hard work. We can't relocate him from that sector until April 15th, 2011. I know, I know. It's such a bureaucracy. I think that sector is in Bette Midler's district. You could try to petition one of her interns for an emergency relocation.
  23. He is apparently quite the character. I have heard him compared to the main character of the book "A Man in Full." I suppose you have to have some sense of self-importance when you're making multi-million dollar real estate bets.
  24. We don't know how 21st century Cincinnatians will behave towards fixed transit. Let's give people the benefit of the doubt that they aren't lazy, eh? Within reason? Chicagoans have horrible diets and winters similar to Moscow, but they will walk further than practically any other American city to transit stops, something like 3,000 feet. If you were to take away their rich transit history and try to predict their behavior based on personal observation and regional stereotype...well...you wouldn't. Because it wouldn't tell you anything.
