  1. Yes UA will purchase as much landnear campus as possible. A new arena will be added and a few other buildings as well. Look for expansion south down Grant st towards I-76.
  2. A friend of mine told me that UA is exploring the option of opening up another campus similar to UA-Wayne and UA-Medina in the Cleveland area.
  3. I dont see a reference between what Akron is doing and the Dayton Downtown Partnership? Confused me a little there. I'm guessing you mean the Downtown Akron partnership (DAP).??
  4. The pictures are actually of the Lock 4 construction.. which is completed now and is host to evenings of Jazz music and such. Its quite a cozy atmosphere in the evening especailly with the sound of the water.
  5. Look alot better than I had hoped for. Browns had the 3rd team QB on the series after GB took out thier 1st team QB. Looked great against GB starting D. TJ Ward is a Beast! Bring on the next game.
  6. Audidave mentioned that 22 Exchange might be getting one. I could see a Coldstone there as well, or over in that historic building that is being renovated, where the Pita Pit is going. I guess Ohio Brewing is not going to be moving in there. Its actually a Nervous Dog Coffee Bar that is going in there.
  7. Its nice now. I was down there when the hamburger fest was going on.. I liked it.. Should become an Akron area niche scene if they put the right type of eateries down there.
  8. I heard on the radio that this area will have enough space open for concerts and such. Seems like this will be another draw for the citizens of Akron.
  9. There will be more apartments going up in DT Akron. I do agree there needs to be more retail added to the area. Chain retail stores in DT Akron would be nice to see. There will be offical news about a new arena in the picture within 5-10 years. Bank on it. UA is experiencing too much growth to keep the JAR. A new arena would generate funding through National acts and concerts of which wont go to the JAR due to seating compacity issues.
  10. ODOT shoved around some ideas of getting federal funds to connect rt 59 to rt 8 and creating a bypass of sorts. Would have also solved part of the interchange issue but nothing came from it.
  11. Like any major construction project it will be done in phases. Street realignment and utility placement are first. Construction of the Goodyear Headquarters and some retail space with a 4-star hotel is next. Last phase calls for more retail and possibly a second hotel. Construction on buildings should start mid 2011.
  12. The YMCA looks nice. Its refreshing to see all the construction going on. I hope something develops with all that empty space on the other side of rt 8.. seeing the summa garage from rt 8 makes me hope multi floor buildings start ;ining either side of rt 8 giving it a great urban feel.
  13. I wonder if there will be expansion on Grant st. It would be good to see UA build some buildings over there. Perhaps the city and UA combine efforts and create a walkbridge from Grant to Southern Downtown near the transit station. It would open up easier access for students to use the transit system. And if High Speed Rail comes to Akron on those tracks it would really boom.
  14. From what I know these plans are scraped. I have heard there is talks about redoing the parking deck underneath and resurfacing the plaza. Also creating a better streetscape there as well. Lock 3 is the entertainment venue as of now. If there ever is development created for the green space at lock 3, Cascade plaza will take over as the main entertainment venue area.
  15. I work not too far from the project. Its coming along nicely. Cant wait to drive down main st after its reconstruction (widening) and see a walkbridge from a parking deck to the new Bridgestone Tech center. The city is trying to make the neighborhood better as well. I've noticed they are boarding up some low income apartments in the area and I also heard something to the effect that they would like to see a hotel put close by. Not sure exactly where though. I wonder what will come of the old tech center. The firestone complex is huge and has alot of empty land. I'd like to see all that land turn into housing. perhaps create a new neighborhood or so.
  16. If you noticed its is the same building design slightly tweeked to accomodate hotel rooms. The hotel company didnt have to pay for building documents, topographical specs and such. These were already done by Testa. I'm not sure if it will be leased or owned by the parent company hotel chain. This is not the Hotel that the mayor wants. He wants one next to the convention center and He is still vying for that to happen. This wasnt the mayors push. Testa made this one happen. There will be other buildings going up over in northside at the same time or just after this hotel. and as for the tunnel idea.. very stupid. I dont even like the part of the towpath trail that goes into downtown when it turns into a semi-tunnel.. easy place to get mugged even in broad daylight.. I'd rather see a creative pedestrian bridge from two future buildings on either side of rt 59. One centered in northside and one where the summa parking lot it... or just make rt 59 a tunnel and connect it to rt 8 as a interchange bypass and build over top..
  17. Is there a new starbucks coming to downtown that wont be on UA property? Oh I also heard rumors of a cold stone having talks with some owner of a downtown building..

The area by Lock 3 has been done for months. I've actually been down there. You can access it by the cascade parking deck. They built automatic doors from the garagge to the patio area..Its wierd because the garage needs renovation and looks grubby but go through the doors and you see brand new stuff..
  19. I know the Art Museum attracts alot of out of towners especially on free admission sundays.. the Knight Center is innovative on events that attract visitors.. You talking about one of those or another? I've heard rumors of a Hyatt Regency trying to get into the Akron scene. It would def have to be somehow connected to the Knight center.
  20. I was surfing the web and found this company (MSI) that has drawings for an renovation of the Cascade plaza area. The project description states the following: The premier business and public center in downtown Akron, Cascade Plaza is a rooftop structure consisting of a 6-acre public square, built over a 5-level underground parking facility. The goal is to redesign the plaza, improve connections to the garage below, and strengthen the connections between the plaza and surrounding streets and venues. Surrounded by the highest density of office use in Akron, the plaza has a unique opportunity to become the civic gateway to the city.
  21. Havnt been on here in awhile..so heres my two cents.. I like whats being down around lock 3.. The new Key building is nice.. Akron needs more steel and glass structures.. (could have been taller though) I would love to see the area around gojo and spaghetti warehouse built up a bit more.. Oh..and when are we going to see that new downtown hotel? I would love to see an art museum hotel like the one in louisville,ky..
  22. 10-6... Wins in week 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 17. Yes, I say they beat Pittsburgh in the meeting late in the schedule.
  23. Recall to cost city $195,604.18 By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer POSTED: 06:58 p.m. EDT, Aug 27, 2009 The final price tag for the failed recall attempt against Mayor Don Plusquellic: $195,604.18. The Summit County elections board on Thursday approved the charge, which Akron will have to pay. Estimates had put the cost for the June 23 recall, which was rejected by nearly three-fourths of the voters, at $175,000 to $200,000. More at http://www.ohio.com
