Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
CAK's aggressive marketing in Cleveland to steal passengers from Hopkins (perhaps helping kill the UA hub) has finally come full circle as the last remaining AirTran route departs for Hopkins. Interesting comment above if Spirit will move its entire operation to CAK from CLE. Remember, the CEO of Spirit is the former CEO of AirTran which loved and built up CAK. That said, it was a different time--CLE had hub prices and resistance (price war) from CO/UA from any new entrants on their routes. That's no longer the case. The CEO of Spirit must be nostalgic as he's adding service to his old airport (CAK), but he'd be foolish to abandon CLE for CAK, as CLE is still by far more convenient to more people and a far more recognizable destination to travelers than CAK, and is a superior airport overall.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I understand about the grant agreement, but Washington should not dictate how cities operate outside of DC. For other cities, they would have looked away. Remember the same federal Dept--USDOT via the FAA fined the city $700k for a much more serious thing that could have killed hundreds---ice on the runways. They eventually settled for a $200k fine. This currently letter is a demand to pay in 30 days--not even negotiable. I guarantee you FTA would never send a letter like that---both tone and content--to the city of New York or other places.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
"At 1,700 to 2,000 square feet, the two- and three-bedroom apartments might rent for $3,800 to $4,500 a month. Each apartment will have at least two bathrooms and a large patio. The parking garage will accommodate 26 cars. The units can't be sold as condominiums because of the nature of Cumberland's underlying land lease with the city." (http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2016/12/cleveland_lakefront_developer.html) Re the clause about condos above---will this be true with all the lakefront development that Cumberland is doing? I'd readily buy a condo there (if there are other amenities like restaurants and shops), but I would not pay $4k a month to rent.

^If its Crains' that's reporting this story, they should have corrected it with a footnote, showing that Cleveland exceeds cinci and columbus. Surprisingly sloppy for Crains.

Cleveland: Buckeye-Shaker: Development and News
^most medical clinics and doctors I know are FOR-PROFIT. But either way, the market value of a building (or 35% of the market value, which is the "Assessed" Value) would still be the value of the building, whether or not its exempt from taxation is another story--or at least that's how I understand the tax code.

Cleveland: Buckeye-Shaker: Development and News
^If google streetview/earth is correct, its a giant and decent looking building, 3-stories, with interior court year--well worth $10M. the county tax records seem strangely (suspiciously?) low.....

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
^That schedule forces an overnight for both CLE folks and NY'ers---not the best business schedule. Will be tough to compete against the majors into LGA and EWR where you can fly in and out the same day to either city. Best of luck to them, but its not a real test without at least 2x daily per direction.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
"Lincoln is a seven-story building at 708 St. Clair Avenue that was built in 1917. The building is best known as the former home of the long-closed Pat Joyce's Tavern downtown, a popular restaurant and bar in the 1970s. The structure incorporates about 500 parking spaces as well as retail space on its first floor and a floor of empty offices on its top floor.." Are floors 2-5/7 offices or parking? The article says the top floor is empty AND it bldg has 500 spaces, but its not clear where the parking is or if there are other office tenants in the bldg on floors other than the top floor. If it is mostly parking, they did and EXCELLENT job of concealing unsightly parking--and certainly better than the westin did even though they just spent millions in their rehab.

^that's good news and will help convince ultimate to expand at BKL. Where can one find that list of largest commercial airports?

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
^Hopefully just poor writing. The article also says: "Four suburban hotels, which opened in 2016, amplify city center options. East of downtown, the $40 million Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic at University Circle offers 276 rooms and 13,000 square feet of meeting space; nearby Hyatt Place at Legacy Village provides 135 rooms and plenty of meeting space." though a total of four suburban hotels are mentioned in the paragraph, listing the Cleveland clinic hotel as the first hotel in the paragraph suggests that it is one of the 'suburban' hotels. the average reader will not count the total number of hotels mentioned in the paragraph to later deduce that the CLE clnic hotel is not one of the suburban ones.

That's a good proportion. Is there a study/data somewhere that shows transit ridership by company or its this just a lone fact from one company?

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
A Piada or Panera would be great additions downtown--especially if they are open til 10pm or so like they are elsewhere. We need dinner places downtown that aren't expensive/sit down restaurants.

Santorini will become a Greek-American style diner that will run 24 hours on the weekends. That's great news and sorely needed downtown. I wish it were 24/7, but i'll take the weekends for now.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
jtadams---thanks for your explanations and examples. Sprawl discussion aside, it certainly makes re-investment in the core city, which is critical for growth of the entire region, more difficult.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
how is this legal? And, assuming that is, wouldn't this be solved by the prospective owner doing a very in depth due diligence before purchasing the property? This, plus some public sources to convert brownfields to 'vacant land'?

^E Rocc--Please expand. Not familiar with CERCLA (other than googling it) but interested to know who contributes to the sprawl. It is because it is too stringent so developers seek greener (cheaper) pastures?

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
I was serious. I understand why folks from a small town would move to a bigger city for opportunities and a more interesting urban environment, but don't see the draw from Cleveland or Cincinnati to Columbus unless one is working or attending OSU or maybe state government. I know there are other companies in town like Nationwide, but the net moves weren't zero, they were positive for Columbus.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
What would compel people to move from these other place to Columbus? Are they attending Ohio State?
