  1. "The city of Cleveland is asking police departments across Ohio to send officers to help during the Republican National Convention in July. While the Cleveland Police Department has 1,521 sworn officers, as many as 5,000 will be needed to provide security for more than 50,000 visitors, journalists and politicos expected for the convention...." http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/news/news/cleveland-puts-out-call-for-more-cops-for-republic/nqLS9/
  2. ^interesting. After weeding out little places (like Saginaw, MI), Cleveland is actually the second city on the list, after Honolulu.
  3. New brewery coming called Goldhorn. At 55 & St. Clair. http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2016/02/goldhorn_brewery_eyes_march_op.html#incart_river_home
  4. This is good news indeed. Currently there is no place at Hopkins that I *want* to eat at. But with this I will actually build it into my schedule. Anyone know where its going to be?
  5. ^It was the office space that was exciting about Intesa. Very sorry to learn that its gone. (And I hate ground floor offices like the new version is proposing.)

^So if the productivity output by a council member is 5.3 times that of a typical city worker, we should ignore that metric and do what Pittsburgh does? That makes no sense. If you want to cut 15 city employees (so we have 2 council people), you could probably cut such dead weight in any department or just wait for 15 to people to retire, rather than get rid of folks who actually do stuff for the city. Further, I wouldn't classify Pittsburgh or Columbus Ohio as peers of Cleveland. Think small=Be small.

^why the constant obsession with council? There are only 17 members. For a city as big and diverse as ours, I think we should have MORE council districts, because a good council person can actually get things done for residents. Currently They make up 0.3% of all city workers and they, in general, work a lot harder than your typical city worker and are not paid that much more on average.

Kasich is able to claim a huge budget surplus at the state level--but its because of gigantic cuts to cities. Doesn't look like any city mayor wants to take the governor on. Failing that, a 2.5% income tax isn't unreasonable.
  9. ^The maintenance worker was, rightfully, fired. With all their other FAA issues, they did the right thing moving swiftly.
  10. ^^Re the post two above this one, which said, "[the new med school]is in line with the Clinic's 30+ year master plan developed by Foster + Partners". I thought Foster + Partners was supposed to be some great firm. Obviously they're destroying the fabric of the city of Cleveland. So, are they just an incompetent firm or just following orders from their client, the Clinic? Either way, they certainly deserve to have a blemished reputation for this crap. I would never recommend them to anyone.
  11. ^What is "the pit"? Are you referring to the parking under the mall that connects to the Marriott?

^I looked at a few sample cities--LA, Detroit, SF, Chicago, NYC, Washington. No overlaps in any of them except in NY--both HPN and TEB--and in Washington--IAD--have both Signature and Landmark operations. So its bad for those airports (less competition). Likely no impact to BKL, though may make it harder for a second FBO to come in operate, especially as a big one (Signature) just bought a smaller one (Landmark). Burke used to have two FBOs operating there simultaneously.

^Why? I can't imagine a NYT endorsement hurts him, especially as he's been at the bottom for so long. From the article: "... The hope among some Republicans is that the Iowa caucuses on Monday and the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 9 will promote a candidate who can appeal to the half of their electorate that doesn’t support the two current front-runners. Those two, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, are equally objectionable for different reasons..... ...Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, though a distinct underdog, is the only plausible choice for Republicans tired of the extremism and inexperience on display in this race. And Mr. Kasich is no moderate. As governor, he’s gone after public-sector unions, fought to limit abortion rights and opposed same-sex marriage..." http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/31/opinion/sunday/a-chance-to-reset-the-republican-race.html?_r=0
  14. This part of the article is curious to me: "...Violand struck the North Olmsted man in the chest with a baseball bat, police said. The victim left the apartment and called Cleveland police, thinking the apartment was in Cleveland. Cleveland police contacted Lakewood police, who arrived a short time later and arrested Violand and Rivera...." These days, don't people just call 911 and are automatically handled by the right PD? it says he CALLED CPD----does that mean he knew the number directly and called it, thus not using 911? If so, is such a practice still common?

A recent Crains article states Ultimate Air has chosen "New York" (actually Morristown, NJ) over Chicago, though I haven't seen any official announcement from the airline and its website doesn't say anything. The article says: "Ultimate Air Shuttle intends to expand its ticketed public charter services from Burke as early as this spring, starting with nonstop flights to New York City." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20160124/NEWS/160129924/is-there-a-better-way-to-get-to-nyc
  16. ^even if it were closer to Euclid, there's STILL a huge lawn on Euclid---even if the "front" of the lawn is on E. 100. I agree with KJP--the Clinic hates Euclid Ave. Its really unfortunate that such develop is allowed codewise....
  17. is that horrendous setback on Euclid? what a horrible physical layout. they could have created a very cool building with an incredible interior space instead of place emptiness on the street.
  18. I definitely won't take one of the apartments, but I WILL try to get one of the condos if it 3br or more. For-sale space, especially other than 0-1-2 bedrooms, is sorely lacking in the downtown market.
  19. wow--Washington's old Greyhound station looks almost exactly like ours.
  20. A Cleveland Hopkins Airport airfield maintenance worker drove a city vehicle across an active runway Sunday and passed beneath an aircraft that was taking flight. http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2016/01/cleveland_hopkins_airport_work.html
  21. ^no mention of hotel in that CMD list of uses. hopefully just an oversight by that source.
  22. ^or maybe his statement was aimed at her, if she forced him into it!
  23. ^I can't image a hotel that size that doesn't have a restaurant open to the public--business breakfast meetings at hotel are very common. Would be a stupid mistake of Drury not to have a restaurant.
