  1. ^good shots. from this angle, the slope looks pretty strange--like its a giant skateboard ramp or something.
  2. ^Do you have downtown employment numbers, currently and historically? It'd be nice to see the trend.

Obviously the mayor has to be a resident. but what qualifies as a resident, simply signing a lease within the city's borders? spending one night per week at the location? spending just a few hours there?
  4. ^Thanks. I guess, if there was some interest from the city, it could push it along. You'd think with Jackson's lakefront vision, they'd be all over this!

The election is less than a year away. Do we think Frank Jackson will run again? Assuming he does, do we want him to win? Jackson did a good job I think of keeping control of the schools from the state, but showed no (public) leadership during all the medical mart discussions, and more importantly, doesn't appear to be doing much on downtown development or bringing in new jobs. Ken Lanci is apparently considering a run. I don't know much about him, but this was in cleveland.com the other day: "CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ken Lanci, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist who spent hundreds of thousands of his own dollars on a failed bid for Cuyahoga County executive in 2010, is considering a run against Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson...." http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2012/12/businessman_ken_lanci_says_hes.html
  6. ^KJP---thanks for digging that up. Bypassing the lakefront makes complete sense. I'll read the report you posted, but must ask in the meantime---is it being considered by the railroads?

So its a contiguous area of built up area's of at least 1000 people per square miles? So, Akron is out because there is a tiny area in between the two metro areas, when Akron is clearly part of the Cleveland CMSA? Are people challenging this term or at least its definition. As is, does it provide an accurate depiction for anything other than places with one central area of activity (like maybe Boise, ID)?
  8. KJP---thanks for posting the link. I quickly scrolled through for a map to get a quick understanding of the issue, but didn't see any. I did see this on the table of contents page: "(note that all maps and figures mentioned in the text are collected at the end of this document)" yet, saw no maps at the end. can you post those or a link to them? at least an overview map showing the bypass options. thanks.
  9. MTS--you make that sound like a bad thing. mrclifton---okay, thanks on the name clarification.
  10. You got some great shots---thanks for the tour and info. A few things you said stood out: "3rd Floor will be displaying the health care of the future, Johnson Controls will be moving its national sales office here from Milwaukee" That's great to hear of activities/offices moving here. "The MM name will be changed." To what? Hopefully something decent sounding. I'm okay with "MM"

What does "Urbanized Area" mean? CLE plus Akron is about 2.8 million. the table above shows us at a weak 1.8 milllion.
  12. If it were turned into a hotel, how many decent-sized rooms do you think it could hold, after accounting for, say, 1 lobby, 1 restaurant, and 1 bar, and a gift shop?
  13. it was a good hotel. sad to see it go.
  14. Hotels around Hopkins are certainly within the 30-min perimeter, but I think of hotels at Clinic and at Univ Circle as part of the 'central city' (even if UC borders Cle hts) as its within the hub of activity in which people visiting CLE find themselves. That said, Downtown is still 'Downtown', so I think its important to break that number out separately. But speaking of places by the airport, are there criteria for what's counted as a hotel room or at least one that's appropriate for a convention? Do the hourly places count?
  15. ^With all the burbs, how many hotel rooms do we have based on those requirements (15,000 rooms within a 30 minute drive and access to another 15,000 beyond that)?
  16. ^inlovewithCLE, that's currently the discussion going on here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,11531.245.html

  18. ^3,800 rooms Downtown doesn't seem like very much....
  19. Okay, the updated list of rooms: DOWNTOWN Aloft - 150 Rooms Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center – 400 rooms Renaissance Cleveland Hotel- 441 rooms + 50 suites Ritz Carlton – 205 rooms DoubleTree by Hilton Cleveland Downtown – Lakeside – 379 including 5 suites Hampton Inn - Cleveland Downtown – 194 rooms Hilton Garden Inn Cleveland Downtown – 240 including 8 suites Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Cleveland – Downtown-141 rooms + 25 suites Hyatt Regency Cleveland at The Arcade – 293 rooms Radisson Hotel Cleveland-Gateway - 142 rooms Wyndham Cleveland at Playhouse Square - 205 rooms, including 32 suites Residence Inn by Marriott - Cleveland Downtown - 175 suites Comfort Inn – Downtown – 130 rooms University Hotel & Suites (36th & Euclid) – 161 rooms* Westin Cleveland Convention Center Hotel - 481 Rooms TOTAL (including hotels under construction – in italics): 3,812 *I know, its east of the Innerbelt boundary of Downtown [“suites” are counted as “rooms” for this purpose.] MIDTOWN/UNIVERSITY CIRCLE Tudor Arms (Doubletree) – 154 rooms Glidden House – 60 rooms Cleveland Clinic Guest House (Intercontinental) (96th & Euclid) – 231 rooms Intercontinental Suites (88th & Euclid) - 162 suites Intercontinental Hotel (98th & Carnegie) 299 rooms + 23 suites Marriott Courtyard—University Circle - 153 Rooms TOTAL (including hotels under construction – in italics): 1,082 [“suites” are counted as “rooms” for this purpose.] TOTAL: DOWNTOWN + MIDTOWN + UNIV CIRCLE: 4,894 POTENTIAL FUTURE Kimpton - 161 Rooms Potential Le Meridien? – (Euclid between 9th and 12th) - ??
  20. ^Other than a big (~800-1000-room) convention hotel, how many rooms do we need Downtown (defined as the river to the Innerbelt, Carnegie to the Lake) to a be credible contender for a the DNC or RNC? And how many rooms do we know we will have in 2016 including Aloft and the Westin? I did a tally once of all the downtown hotels on here once, let me see if I can dig it up. EDIT: Ok, just found my old list, its here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26395.105.html --it may need a little updating. it also includes UC/Cle Clinic hotels in the total.
  21. Why? Are you a fan of unsustainable and unsightly suburban sprawl? The more people in a given area, the more it can support conveniences of life (shops, restaurants, laundromats) and frequent mass transit service. I don't even know why this is even a story. Millions of people (take NYC and Tokyo for example) live in spaces that are smaller than your typical CLE apartment and its completely acceptable. Are we saying its okay for THOSE people, but not us in CLE? Higher density is what this city sorely needs. In fact, the city of Cleveland is not even the most dense city in the state, as one would expect it to be---its the suburb of Lakewood.
  22. <b>Demolition to start Dec. 17 on John Marshall High in Cleveland</b> Can this be stopped or does no one care enough (except the guy refusing to eat)? The Society Bank building on Public Square was also scheduled to be torn down---and enough people protested. It was not only saved and restored, but was the inspiration for the city's tallest building as well.
  23. This is good-I've been saying this for a while (and have gotten shot down here by some on UO). Smaller apartments mean more units/people per building, supporting density that can support 24/7 delis, restaurants, etc. plus more retail like dry cleaners, groceries, etc.
  24. Just heard that we--as a society---are tearing down John Marshall HS---a beautiful piece of architecture. According to this article, it's because it needs work and it would cost $1M MORE to fix it than to demolish and replace it with some crap. Likely, with cost overruns, it will end up costing a lot more---and it would have been cheaper to keep it. Its insane that we'd destroy a bldg for a difference of $1M at an estimate. Why not ask the Cleveland Foundation? They sit on over $1 Billion and would likely be happy to help. The landmarks commission folks should all be let go. A Cleveland man's hunger strike won't save John Marshall High School but it's worth noticing: Mark Naymik http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2012/12/a_cleveland_mans_hunger_strike.html#incart_river_default
