  1. ^ I agree. Its also too difficult to figure out the number based on the article--- "Attendees at these three conferences are expected to fill more than 2,575 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland in a Thursday-Sunday" Assuming check in on Thurs and out on Sunday is 3 nights, so 2575 divided by 3 nights divided by 3 separate years would be 286....that doesn't seem right...if they meant 2,575 room nights, then it would be 2575 / 3 conferences which is 858 which also seems low if 9,000 people attended the last one...
  2. Another conference slated for the CCMM. "The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) has agreed to hold its Professional Development Conference in Cleveland in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Attendees at these three conferences are expected to fill more than 2,575 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland in a Thursday-Sunday pattern during January and February, according to a news release. This will bring a direct economic impact expected to exceed $2.8 million. More than 9,000 people attended OMEA’s 2012 conference...." http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/cleveland-medical-mart-and-convention-center-books-large-music-education-conference
  3. Looking at this agreement 4 years later, has anything materialized from it? Did the Costa Rican government ever open their 'midwest trade center' here?

  5. Not new to CLE, but new to the MMCC: Ohio Optometric Association to move conference to Cleveland's new convention center By JAY MILLER 2:04 pm, August 27, 2012 "The Ohio Optometric Association's annual EastWest Eye Conference will move to the under-construction Cleveland Convention Center in 2013, 2014 and 2015. 6. ^I don't like the giant street signs either--anywhere in the city....makes the city look stupid.
  7. Apparently the old familiar name "Auto-Rama" will cease to exist. The I-X Center bought the show and will merge it with their Power Piston show, though the surviving dates of the show (March) will be Auto-Rama's. http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120813/FREE/120819956
  8. This is a cool event -- and is open to the public. Airliners International 2013 -- Cleveland June 26 -- 29, 2013 Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel The World's Largest Airline Collectibles Show & Convention! The Airliners International Collectibles Show and Convention, now in its 37th year, makes its first Cleveland appearance in June 2013. The three-day annual event will draw commercial aviation enthusiasts from around the globe. http://ai2013cle.com/
  9. All--I would like to propose this new topic. I know we have posted convention news under the CCMM thread, but that is supposed to be more about construction. Also, there are other venues for events in the city. As such, this topic could be for all future convention announcements. And I'll start with the next post.....

Too bad this not for a runway extension...... "The City of Cleveland, Department of Port Control will conduct a Public Workshop and Hearing to present the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Runway Safety Area (RSA) Improvements at Burke Lakefront Airport from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at Burke Lakefront Airport, 1501 North Marginal Road. The Department of Port Control has completed the Draft Environmental Assessment Report and the report is available for review as of Monday, August 6, 2012. 11. From what I've read on here, the staff was rude and indifferent. If true, it serves them right. Also, according to the article, the store was 4,500 sq. feet. That's a huge space. If we want bustling retail downtown, we need smaller retail spaces--then we could have a whole bunch of interesting shops -- Think East Village in New York----instead of 300-400 sq foot shops if you had dredger-sized spaces, the streetlife would be completely dead. We need SMALLER retail. I know, landlords like big spaces--less headaches due to few tenants. But if we want vibrant retail, we need small spaces. For example, look at VOLKS and Mike the Hatter that are soon to be wiped out. those are little shops. If they were 10-15 times bigger, they never would have lasted.
  12. ^Why is it such a big deal--just one chain restaurant, no? I'm not that familiar with it. Personally, I'd rather see Volks and hatter over another restaurant---those places--amongst others---gave Prospect its soul, which, sadly, it is slowly losing....
  13. To me, being adjacent to the runways IS tranquil. Re conservation efforts, keep in mind we must have airport-compatible uses. You don't want more wildlife next to the airport, particularly, birds. Also, boardwalks north of the runway, although a very cool idea--imagine a bike/walking path north of the runways along the lake---would likely be fought by FAA, TSA, etc on security issues....
  14. UA is bringing back CLE-SAN over the holiday season again this year.

  16. Question on the graphic above (in post 1092): It says, pointing to the terminal, "Reuse and Preserve Existing Terminal". What does that mean? Reuse it as an airport terminal or reuse it as something else? If the latter, will a new terminal be built? It'd be a great time to build a new terminal with a secure area, screening area, jetways, and baggage carousels---to be like other airports in the country....perhaps such a building could be further east on N. Marginal if not in the same location....
  17. Where's Megadeath's stop/station in CLE these days?
  18. ^Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

They're both horrible. And this one though says "Northeast Ohio" in bold letters instead of "Cleveland" which makes no sense. Like the old site, the 'news' leaves much to be desired. Right now the top four stories: free hearing tests, live chat with cleveland.com, an obituary [that's fine], and some MTV crap. However right now, the latest news in the world including Cleveland: there is a power failure impacting MILLIONS in India, the Fed is considering a 'pre-emptive' stimulus package, and new 'boldness' of militants are threatening US-Pakistan ties. Cleveland.com makes the city look like Hicksville, USA--a small town that is clueless the rest of the planet.

  21. Crain's headline today: MMPI shows off progress at convention center site, says showroom space is 40% leased "...Mr. Johnson, public relations director for developer MMPI Inc., is leading a dozen tours a week of the $465 million trade show complex..." (I don't have a subscription, so don't have more info!)
  22. I know we now know that she wants to be near CLE as that's where her husband works. But, in general (to future requestors), I wouldn't sell CAK as a comparable airport at all to CLE. The options in terms of cities and frequencies/times of days of flights, Akron-Canton is no comparison to Hopkins. Unless the person is commuting back and forth to a city that is easy from CAK, I wouldn't recommend it as an alternative to Hopkins in terms of where to live in Cleveland. Furthermore, if UA leaves Hopkins, Southwest would drop all their legacy AirTran flights from CAK in a second and move all operations to CLE to jump on that opportunity, as its a much larger and higher yielding market. To the OP, i'd second the recommendation above for western lakewood--just 20 minutes from CLE, or West Park, which is closer to the airport, and though in city, feels more suburban than that part of Lakewood.
  23. Interesting. The rock and roll hall of fame recently opened a 'branch' of the CLE museum in NY in SoHo a while ago. It lasted only a few years ago, then it, too, closed.
