  1. ^I didn't say investments should not be made esp. if they're needed for current operations or for growth. And who knows, maybe the new rail line could eventually be used for a passenger/transit service for a new community built there 50 years from now....
  2. Does this investment make it harder to move the port eventually out of its current location? I know is not the plan right now, but should happen down the road.
  3. true. I never showed a percentage gain, just current numbers (though I did include the Holiday Inn Express though some say is no longer taking reservations as it will be rebranded) and known future numbers. The Crowne Plaza numbers were never included in the "Current" list cause its already closed.
  4. I think a downtown to downtown comparison between CLE and other cities is a fair request. If 20,000 out of 25,000 rooms are not downtown, can Downtown CLE support 20,000 extra parking spots less the offset from shuttle bus operations? If I were planning a convention in a city and it was in the Downtown of that city (not, e.g., the IX Center), I would compare how many rooms were DOWNTOWN--say within walking distance or an easy cab ride. If I were to stretch it all, I'd include the hotels at W. 150 cause they're on the rapid, but certainly not Beachwood or Lorain.
  5. ^For convention competition purposes, how does our 5300 rooms Downtown (and UC) compare with, say, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver?

  8. To me, CLE and NY are similar--so i shall pre-empt any such attacks on that assumption: there are two Sheratons on the same street---and even same block I believe---the "Sheraton New York" and the "Sheraton Manhattan" are both on 53 st---one at the corner of 7th Ave and the other at the corner of 6th Ave.
  9. Yeah, 20-stories would be reasonable. this thing has an 8-story parking garage--it almost dwarfs the office 'tower'---which is only about 40 taller. it will look kinda silly and will fill up so fast they're gonna wish they had built it taller. a tower here is not really in competition with downtown. if you're a bio medical or educational or cultural firm, you probably don't want to be downtown and if you can't get space nearby UC, you'll probably head east. Likewise if you want to be downtown, you won't want to be 'remote' in UC. they are different markets.
  10. Ok, perhaps not 80, but certainly more than a little 12-story building. this is the ONLY office construction in UC. At least 40-50 stories.
  11. The project is okay--certainly better than nothing. However, I think the office component should be much larger (while keeping the rest). There is really very little office space in UC, despite the incredible potential. I'd love to see a bold move here--maybe an 80-story office building. And to balance it perhaps a 40-50 story residential building. The offices and apartments/condos would create its own demand for all the street-level retail. Such an office tower would not cannibalize Downtown--if anything it would keep jobs in the city that would otherwise be heading to Beachwood or Mayfield Hts. And it would allow for all the tiny startups cooking in the areas--whether boosted by Case, the Clinic, or BioEnterprise--a place to grow in the neighborhood without moving out (or out of the region altogether). The project is nice. But a BOLD move would be really impressive and is ultimately needed in the city.
  12. as of this weekend, CO is no more....very sad. Looks like some major delays at ORD and IAD--UA hubs--as the integration was implemented. Farewell to a great airline.
  13. Where does CLE fall on the list, or are they only giving the top 10? (I looked at the link, but didn't see it.)
  14. "Dr. Cosgrove unveiled plans to create an addition to the Clinic's Taussig Cancer Institute on its main campus, which has outgrown its current space off Euclid Avenue. Likewise, the system plans to also construct a new building for its neurological center. " http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120229/FREE/120229802
  15. Just curious--why were they banned?
  16. Re KJP's post above, I know that image is from the report or somewhere, not by KJP, but its labeled wrong. Its not the "New York PATH Terminal" (PATH=Port Authority Trans Hudson), its the "Port Authority Bus Terminal". (The Port Authority is a bi-state NY & NJ agency) Its the main bus terminal in NY where buses from Jersey come into the city. (The Port Authority also operates a second terminal uptown, but much smaller, in Washington Hts.) This one is in Midtown around 42nd and 8th Ave. The image is of the roadways over 9th Ave. as they lead into the terminal, as they come out of the Lincoln Tunnel. The term "PATH" refers to the train operated by the port authority that connects NY and NJ. It runs nowhere near the Bus Terminal shown above, and is, on the NY side, completely underground.
  17. Interesting data. I agree that the 1880 to 2000 comparison isn't meaningful/useful, but the decade by decade data are. Sad to see that Cuyahoga, once a mecca for immigrants is no longer seen that way.....
  18. ^Okay thanks. Maybe I'll give the Mrki's place a shot in the dark. Eastlake is bit far, but how is Dubrovnik Gardens?
  19. chill, man. I never said they are in financial trouble. i simply asked 'should we be worried?' when a company starts selling off assets of the very same type we've dedicated $500 million to, its a valid question.
  20. ^ummmm....whether or not they own the buildings, the public has a sizable investment & contract with them. if they declared bankruptcy and disappeared, I do think that that would somewhat of an issue.
  21. Currently looking for as an authentic as possible Croatian place. Digging around online, I found 2 potential Croatian restaurants. Does anyone know which is better or anything about either of them? 1. Mrki's Place, 5379 St. Clair 2. Croatian Tavern, 3244 St. Clair
  22. With the closing of Holiday Inn Express--which was relatively new--and the closing of the two main Holiday Inns downtown ("Lakeside" and "Downtown" [21st and Euclid]), the brand is gone from Downtown. Is that true in other cities' downtowns as well? (I know we now have two IC's in Midtown we didn't have before, but I'm talking specifically about Holiday Inn.)
  23. Though Indigo is surely better than Holiday Inn Express, no?
  24. ^ah--its confusing. mrclifton88 asked about work that was to begin on January 1. I was there ONCE sometime in January---and so i said, i had been there 'since' the date in question---i did not mean I had been there 'continuously' since that date. That said, it would be cool to live there for a couple of months. I could check out Public Square at all hours of the night just by stumbling outside!
  25. Hey, can anyone recommend a good Croatian restaurant? Thanks.
