I would hope CLE officials would at least be throwing their hat in the ring as well--just in case Sears is really considering moving. We've heard talk now of Cincinnati and Columbus. Cleveland is a glaring omission.

^Robert---I love that shot of the train.

Hey that's great. I hope an airline does come through with service to DEN. Can it be any airline (UA, WN, or Frontier) or does it have to be Frontier?
  6. Unforeseen issues are common with any construction project--even home renovations. A service drive off W. 3 needs to be repaired/replaced... "Cuyahoga County may have to shell out another $1.6 million on its $465 million medical mart project, to rebuild a deteriorated service drive......Appelbaum announced the issue at a project update at Tuesday's County Council meeting, where council members also questioned a $200,000 request to design possible upgrades to the mall and a decision to offer free medical mart leases to Cleveland colleges." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/09/cuyahoga_county_medical_mart_h.html
  7. Its not the most user-friendly site. I'm looking at the population change 2000-2010 map, and its color-coded, but with no key for what the colors refer to. Capital improvements map is cool, though.
  8. Apparently out a few months now, but I just learned about this. Still exploring it. Its an official City site, but I couldn't find a link to it from the main city site. GIS maps for the following: * Crime Data * Accela Permits & Licenses * Census Information * Land & Property Status * Capital Improvements 2011-2015 * Routing & Drive Analysis * Proposed Congressional Districts (NEW!) http://www.clevelandgis.org/

No disrespect to Stephanie Tubbs Jones, but this is a perfect example of why transportation stations should have geographic names (like "30th Street" or "30th & Prospect") otherwise people have no idea where it is. I don't for one, though I know the city very well. An exception to the bad naming convention may be very famous places, like "JFK Airport". Otherwise, if you said "Hopkins" without "Cleveland" preceding it, most people wouldn't know what you're talking about. If you want to use a name to honor someone, it should follow the geographic marker, like "E 30th & Prospect Stephanie Tubbs Jones transit center". Long and clumbsy, I know, but at least you know where it is. I know the above doesn't answer your question, but its an important point and this topic set that off--sorry! congrats on your decision to move Downtown and getting out of the 'burbs! Another option, if you want to be downtown, but can't find a rental, consider buying a place with your friend as its a great time to buy and downtown is a good investment. After graduating, hold on to it, and lease it out if either of you don't want to stay there after graduation.
  10. ^I hope so: "The developers of Cuyahoga County's medical mart have offered rent-free space to [CSU and Tri-C] and possibly private companies, raising concerns about the viability of the tax-financed concept.....MMPI, which is under contract to build and operate the mart and an attached convention center, dismissed the concerns. Brian Casey, general manager of the complex, would not discuss specific deals, but said MMPI has sent 37 leases to prospective tenants." http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2011/09/cleveland_state_takes_free_space_in_medical_mart.html

^^I agree. Pissing off your neighbors is never a wise policy. Who here actively harasses/irritates their neighbor without expecting some form of ill will or revenge? I would guess that Kentucky probably has lower taxes than OH....so Cincy should now expect an active campaign by KY to lure businesses there. Why target Charlotte when you can lure a cincy company where companies don't have to find new staff or new homes? So if the move can really be credited to kasich, he may indeed have won today. but tomorrow's another day...

that's why i said 'no confidence' as opposed to a specific crime. Examples of no confidence to lead: a PUCO Policy that charges existing homeowners and business (some of which who are financially struggling) more money to subsidize discounts for others making Ohioans pay approximately $17m so other states can be more economically competitive against the state of ohio (by returning the 3C rail money).
  14. ^three years or six years (from 2008)? The way the article is written its not very clear: "Miskin claims his sublease for the property remains in effect for an additional three years subsequent to his exercise of his renewal option in September and that he has an option to renew for an additional three years at the conclusion of the current term."

Does Ohio have a provision to remove a governor for no-confidence?
  16. Pugu replied to a post in a topic in Ohio Politics
PUCO is proposing giving major discounts on utilities to some and making all other ohio users of electricity--like you, me, and struggling businesses to absorb 80% of these costs. Is this just another attempt by Kasich to destroy the state of Ohio? http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9POGKVO1.htm
  17. so how do we make this happen?
  18. ^I support the annexation of EC as well. I assume residents of both cities would have to agree, but its a campaign worth fighting for in both cities.
  19. Cool event: Tour of Downtown and Ohio City with the Mayor. Plus reception at City Hall. And only 10 bucks. Rediscovering Cleveland: A Retro-Ethnic Trolley Adventure Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (ET) "Please join Mayor Frank G. Jackson and Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 for a Lolly the Trolley excursion. The Rediscovering Cleveland tour will take us back in time and tickle our brains with little known facts about Cleveland's ethnic heritage. The evening will begin at 5:30 with a reception in Cleveland City Hall Rotunda and a special exhibit by the Western Reserve Historical Society featuring images and information about the City's early inhabitants. At 6:15, we will board the Trolleys for a 1 hour tour of downtown and the near west side. Our guides will share the history of the various ethnic groups that settled in these areas and discuss their migration patterns throughout our region." http://tourcleveland.eventbrite.com/
  20. A new $3m HUD grant for the city: "The City of Cleveland, Ohio will receive a BEDI grant of $3 million and a Section 108 Loan for $10 million for the cleanup and redevelopment of the former Warner and Swasey Facility. The project will transform the property into over 180,000 square feet of office, lab, warehouse and light manufacturing and post incubator space in support of the Health-Tech Corridor. HUD funding will result in the creation of up to 360 permanent full time equivalent positions. The total project cost is estimated to be more than $19 million." http://www.realestaterama.com/2011/09/08/hud-awards-133-million-to-bring-jobs-revitalize-brownfields-in-six-cities-ID011114.html
  21. Are you talking about the apt/condo building that was recently converted to residential about 5 years ago--http://www.walkerweeks.com/ ??
  22. ^What's good for CLE is good for Ohio!
  23. Five more movies coming to the state.... one of which (The Yank) will be in CLE and one of which (Confession starring Danny Glover) will shoot at a location yet to be determined. "CLEVELAND - The spotlight may be on Hollywood, but the Ohio film industry continues to grow as Ohio’s Motion Picture Tax Credit secures more productions. According to the Ohio Film Office, five new projects will bring in anticipated revenue of more than $17.1 million for Ohio. “Confession” starring Danny Glover will receive a $1.03 million Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit to shoot in an Ohio location that is yet to be determined...." http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/entertainment/movies/local_films/ohio-motion-picture-tax-credit-helps-secure-five-new-projects
  24. I generally support the Third Frontier program. In Crains today, they discuss $6.6m going to NE Ohio. But of that amount, $1m is going to a Pittsburgh company who "plans to establish a manufacturing business in Ohio to make the product." This doesn't seem right, particularly as Ohio companies may be struggling and they too would be working in Ohio.... From the article: "ChemImage Corp. of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with Kent State University, was awarded about $1 million to develop a commercially viable manufacturing process for a liquid crystal-based filter that would be used in sensors. The product could be used to detect chemical, biological or explosive weapons, for instance, or to analyze forensic evidence. ChemImage plans to establish a manufacturing business in Ohio to make the product." I realize it says, "in collaboration with Kent State University", but it still doesn't seem right. Thoughts? http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110906/FREE/110909933
