Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
of course a mainline flight would be nicer, but its either this or nothing. AA pulled out of Cleveland around 5 years ago, so as far as AA is concerned (and their giant hub at MIA) its American Eagle and their small aircraft or nothing. CO Express also flies the route and uses the same type of bird--ERJ-145.

American Eagle is bringing back CLE-MIA service, 2X Daily, beginning 18 NOV. Its only an Embraer-145 (about 50 seats)--but its a new carrier on the route--and provides competition to the CO service. Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
A rare thing: A Forbes list that doesn't put Cleveland at the bottom. On a list, "America's Top 50 U.S. Cities For Working Mothers--A look at how the 50 largest cities rank for working moms, based on women's earnings, unemployment rates, crime levels, school systems, health care and cost of living," Cleveland's overall rank is 18. Columbus is 17 and Cincy is 26. Minneapolis is #1 and Washington #2. Memphis is 49 and Las Vegas is 50. http://www.forbes.com/2010/07/24/best-us-cities-working-mothers-employment-family-forbes-woman-leadership-parenting-table.html

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
You saying people in NE Ohio are a little dim that they have to see the word "State" in a college name in order to think its a place where they should apply? The school should be aiming high. If it can get students from all over the country and world all the better for all the students who attend there. Not only would be a more culturally diverse student body, but it would be more competitive, meaning it would go up in national rankings and it would attract even more students. Names matter. Of course, other things do as well (like quality of education, dorms/campus life, etc.), but the name is not trivial by any means. When people start a company or have a kid, many agonize and fight over what the name should be--why would it be different for this institution?

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
Actually, i think "Univ of Cleveland" sounds classier than CSU. Regardless of how good a state school is, the word "State" is never a prestigious thing, except maybe Penn State or Ohio State when you're talking sports. Of course, public schools are not necessarily less good than private schools--UC-Berkeley, for example, is an excellent and extremely competitive school. and it is public. then again, California has the UC system for its better schools and CSU--whatever town--for its lesser schools. (CSU here, being California State University). Names are important. The Jake to Progressive---was a naming rights deal for money--it had nothing to do with what people thought would be an improvement on 'the Jake'. Univ of Cleveland or Cleveland Univ (where Cle would then show up in alphabetical listing of schools on a national list) does sound a lot better than Cleveland State.

Tower City Shots (Observation deck and 18th floor)
I know--but it sounded like he had a special tour as it included the 18th floor as well, meaning it could have been anytime. (I hope it was on a weekend.)

Tower City Shots (Observation deck and 18th floor)
Great shots--thanks for sharing. When--time of day/day of week--were the images from the Terminal Tower shot? There is an amazingly small number of cars on the streets...hopefully this was a weekend, not a weekday.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
The Huffington Post is a well-known and popular site, particularly for political news. They also track and publish who in your community is giving to which federal candidate or party. However, Heilbrunn's rant is neither news nor insightful analysis, and as such, I just lost some respect for the Huffington Post. Its more like a Forbes-esque whine. Perhaps Heilbrunn was dumped by a girl from Cleveland or has some other personal issue; his article is clearly vindictive and without balance. Shame on the once-respectable Huffington Post.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
from Crain's: Long-delayed Cuyahoga County audits should be released soon By JAY MILLER 2:30 pm, July 8, 2010 The long-delayed audits of Cuyahoga County government should be released soon, freeing the county to issue new debt, including a $325 million bond issue for the planned convention center and medical merchandise mart. Cuyahoga County administrator James McCafferty announced at this morning's county commissioners meeting that the audits of county finances for 2007 and 2008, held up because of the federal corruption probe, should be released within the next week. “They are clean, and we are able to move forward,” Mr. McCafferty said.... http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100708/FREE/100709874

Cleveland: Streets in the City that are NOT part of CMSD
Okay--i've done the definitive research. the question was if there were any streets on the west side of the city that were served by a suburban school district rather than CMSD. i have found one LOCATION on the west side that is IN the city, yet not in CMSD. And i say 'location' because its not a street or block, rather ONE address on a street: 6511 Ruple Road with a zip code of 44142 -- not to be confused with the Ruple Road in South Collinwood. Google maps places this in the southwest corner of CLE airport, so my guess is that it came about as a result of some land swap for CLE expansion. However, i'm not sure that a house still exists there (per aerial photo) and land records show the house (whether or not its there) owned by the city of cleveland.

Ohio Navigable Waterways (non-Great Lakes)
Texas? How are ports normally ranked, by value of goods? I though LA/Long Beach was the largest port in the US, followed by NY/NJ.

Thanks. Anything on the west side?

Cleveland: Streets in the City that are NOT part of CMSD
Are there any streets in Cleveland proper, OTHER than those around Shaker Square which are part of the Shaker Hts School System, that are not part of the Cleveland Municipal School System, but rather a neighboring suburban district (like Lakewood, Rocky River, Euclid, etc.)? Thanks!

Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh Passenger Rail Service
Thanks KJP. I wasn't actually familiar with the statutes--which as written, as you state, makes its subject to interpretation as to whether or not it applies.
-
Cleveland-Youngstown-Pittsburgh Passenger Rail Service
KJP--very nice report. Nicely written and excellent graphics. One comment--service does not have to be operated by Amtrak. Your report seems to suggest that 'approval' or a commitment from Amtrak to operate more CLE-PIT service is a required step in the process. However, the tracks, right of way, and signaling are owned by CSX or NS, and though Amtrak, under contract, provides the operations for some commuter operations in the country, it does not have to provide all of them, including this route. I don't think getting Amtrak to commit should be part of the steps, as we don't really need their "commitment". If CYP will use their stations, then some form of MOA should be in place that 'if passenger service is built on CYP under the [KJP] alignment, then Amtrak agrees, upon a suitable arrangement for all involved parties, to allow the new commuter operation to use its stations at xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx." Amtrak may well be the best operator, but if getting their full approval to operate it today, without knowing how much they'll be paid for it, will be difficult and likely add months/years to the process.
