  1. so what stops CMSD from making them available?---if there are no takers, can the district then lease them/sell them to other uses or does the law state they must be regular schools, charter schools, or otherwise destroyed? if this is the case, it doesn't make much sense.
  2. We can't let all those beautiful schools be demolished. What can be done? The Society Bank bldg on Public Square was also slated for demolition and enough community outraged not only saved it, but led to the current concept with Key Tower. Could the schools be turned into apartments (like in Ohio city many years ago), or artist studios (like Murray Hill School in Little Italy), or other uses such as community centers? Could they be tranferred to the city or the Parks Dept if the CMSD just wants to unload them? It would be such a waste of the city and its heritage to just tear down those beautiful old school buildings. Otherwise we'll soon into something like phoenix or some other boring place with no historical buildings or character.
  3. That sounds good--where on Buckeye?
  4. MD88PILOT -- good data and analysis--thanks!

There will be no change. Burke is a non factor. What leads you to believe there will or will not be impact at Burke. Continental owns or has control over the landing rights at Burke. There is currently no commercial jet service and with the merger there wont be any. "Continental owns or has control over the landing rights at Burke." Did you mean to add the 'neither' after 'Continental'? In any event, I think CO does actually have some unofficial control as to what competitive flights are allowed at BKL...off the record. Two things come to mind: 1. If CO's market dominance is reduced there would be greater chances for new carriers to enter the market. For example, Porter Air mentioned its interest in Cleveland--and probably to BKL as it mirrors their service at their hub--Toronto City Airport (and not YYZ--the Toronto equivalent of Hopkins). 2. If CO indeed calls the shots for commercial service at BKL, then any hub dissolution may take that power away, meaning the airport and its cheaper landing fees becomes an option for airlines.
  6. Thank God there's no streetfront shops/restaurants/cafes--true to Clinic form.

What are people's thoughts as to the impact on BKL of the UA-CO merger?
  8. Per OAG, CO schedule changes effective October are below. Note: This is NOT the drawing down of CLE or anything else--reductions below are only typical seasonal (post-summer) adjustments (and are done in CO's IAH and EWR markets as well). Read: current frequencies per day to future frequencies per day, and the effective date if not October: CLE-ATL 5>4 CLE-BOS 5>4 CLE-GSP 2>1 CLE-JAX 0>1 CLE-MHT 4>3 CLE-MIA 0>1 OCT CLE-NAS 1/WK>0 CLE-PHX 2>3 DEC- CLE-RSW 2>1 NOV CLE-SAN 0>1 DEC- CLE-TPA 2>1 OCT-NOV CLE-TYS 2>1 Not sure how long San Diego will last--it usually appears for a few months or less each year. No route/schedule changes from any of the other carriers at CLE.
  9. WN carries approx 10% of all passengers at CLE (the largest carrier after CO/CO Express/CO-Connection). WN is considered an LCC, no?
  10. Etheostoma Caeruleum (& rockandroller): You can take UA's 747 to HNL. "Only United has a direct flight to Hawaii" (Direct, though not non-stop--HNL via ORD). Actually, two--a 747 to HNL daily and a DC-8 to Hilo 4x/week. Oh, wait a minute, this ad from the PD is from '76. Cool ad from the past: http://www.opshots.net/gallery2/index.php?page=photos&id=2234
  11. Building a better FIS is not unrealistic--particularly if it will make a difference between reducing or growing the hub. Change can bring opportunity. But we must guide this change to make it benefit Cleveland. If building a new FIS at "C" is impractical, and a new terminal/concourse is the way to go (which I know would be costly), then perhaps spending a few dollars right now to somehow spruce up the existing one would be the answer. (Not sure if this possible as I don't know the specifics of the constraints. Haven't been in it in 18 years!)
  12. MD88PILOT--i agree, build a new, world-class terminal/concourse, complete with an FIS somewhere--NE of A or the site of the existing IX Center.
  13. One thing CLE could do--as alluded to in my post above (Reply 1225)--is to build a great FIS that will allow for the quick INS processing of people entering the city who can make timely connections to ongoing flights--like you have at EWR, ORD, ATL, etc. Asking CO/UA to pay for this at this point, would be a DISincentive to expand--at best--or stay--at worst--at CLE. Thus, as an incentive, CLE should take it upon itself to build a great FIS facility--perhaps under Concourse C. Perhaps as part of this, CLE could get some route guarantee from the new UA, stating, 'we'll build the new FIS and build it now, but you must keep a hub here and provide at least two int'l flights--maybe LHR and FRA'.
  14. CLE needs to build the new FIS NOW—at any cost. (I believe the earlier estimate was $35m—which is nothing for CLE’s general budget.) We cannot allow the new UA to use as an excuse the impossibility of using CLE for any int’l flights because of its inadequate or outdated Customs/Immigration facilities compared to other ports of entry. It gives them even more fuel to downsize the hub two years down the road after all regulatory approvals have been cleared. CLE must be proactive here and not wait for an airline to come along and pay for it. The city must make the city attractive. The money spent will easily come back to the city, but the timing is NOW. Please, everyone, write to Ricky Smith, Jackson, Kucinich, others, and push for this.

wow..i wouldn't want to be such a heavy bird landing at LGA... Air Force One uses BKL, doesn't it? Though I believe its been modified to use shorter runways than what it traditionally used for 747s, no?

Finally, some solid thinking of why BKL is important for Cleveland--a nice change from the more common arguments calling for its closure. (one technical point from the article: "Burke currently handles any kind of aircraft flown in the world." I don't think the airport could handle an A380 or an An225, but overall its a good article.) Burke's role in economic development and aviation is critical for Cleveland's future By Plain Dealer guest columnist April 19, 2010, 3:52PM Burke Lakefront Airport has opportunity to soar By Anthony J. Coyne Clevelanders should not consider grounding Burke Lakefront Airport before it is given an opportunity to take off. Recent articles and editorials have argued that the city of Cleveland and those charged with planning its future development have ignored the role and potential of Burke, possible alternative uses of its 450 acres and the transportation network surrounding it. Not so. Consider these facts.... http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/04/burkes_role_in_economic_develo.html

of course i want a cell carrier that works outside of cleveland as well, but if i were to be in cleveland more than any other single city, then the service in cleveland is what i would care mostly about. (for example, both verizon and sprint have national coverage, but in NYC sprint was HORRIBLE, but verizon was good, thus if i were in NY at least 51% of the time, i would not go with sprint.) thanks for all the input.

I've had verizon for years, but had to drop them as they were evil--they began to destroy my credit--unwittingly to me until i got a letter from a credit card lowering my rate for a 'delinquent account'. long, painful story, but after months of heartache and letters to all the credit agencies and verizon, they finally corrected it and withdrew their claim. i can now never give them another dime. otherwise, cell-wise, i thought they were better than all the others out there, unfortunately. thanks for all the advice. sounds like AT&T is the winner.

I was wondering--which cell phone provider has the best service (quality of call, minimal drops, etc) in metropolitan Cleveland? (Price, I assume, would be probably competitive among the carriers, and I'm sure customer service would be probably bad at all of them....) Thanks for your thoughts.
  20. Hey, anyone know anything about www.whattheforbes.com? I've heard about it --and that its a good site--but it never seems to load up. Did Forbes protest and was the site taken down? Forbes's 'most miserable city' crap is getting way too much airplay. Cleveland needs an equally strong positive marketing campaign that doesn't come off as typical city marketing, and that is targeted worldwide (which is how far forbes's silly list is making the rounds).

Thanks all for your input. Rockandroller--if you don't mind, just in case, what was the name of the great high-risk OB you had?
  23. Hello--was looking for a good obstetrician in Cleveland on either side of town. Anyone have any good stories/experiences/recommendations? Thanks. :-)
