doctabroccoli--this is what CO calls "through flight service". its essentially a marketing ploy. You wanna go to BCN from CLE? well it only requires a 'change of flights in FRA'. so one assumes 2 planes. the change of equipment at EWR is only in the fine print. But also, if you're looking for CLE--anywhere flights and, on the website you're using, select 'no more than one stop', then all the through-flights should show up, meaning CLE-FRA--rest of europe.... as stated above, it has nothing to do with whether or not a real non-stop to LHR, FRA, PVG, or elsewhere will happen. Here's an article on this matter: http://www.airlinecity.com/2007/11/24/continental%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Cthrough-flight-service%E2%80%9D/

Finance in U.S.
Having lost National City, I'm sure Cleveland fell significantly. It still has Key and, of course, the Fed.

ah, the good ol' days.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
so, if its part of the alt. analysis, its not so crazy. BRT is always thrown in there as an alt these days. what would be crazy is if RTA was pushing it behind the scenes so that the analysis favored it. but if not, its just part of the funding game. sounds like the PD though liked the idea and is trying to push it on their end.

according to the article, if Geis offered to sell the easement a year or so ago, that means he must recognize it as still valid an not defunct cause of lack of use.

is the rail extension plan dead or is this BRT crap just an alternative?

Not necessarily. A plane isn't going to land at an airport if all of its support services and comforts for the passenger (waiting area with nice leather couches, rental car office/service, decent food/business services) are at another airport. Air taxi services/corporate hangers can offer all of this---and do at BKL. I don't know what at CGF for the business traveler, but if none of that existed at CGF, then that does consolidate the market at BKL. CGF could stay open for individual/general aviation pilots for recreational reasons.

Info on relocating to Cleveland area
lopsidedfrock--thanks--a map is exactly what I was looking for. But that map is pretty bad! The benefit of using colors is so one can easily see the boundaries of a place. Whoever made that map uses distinctly different colors for outlying areas--for example, Mayfield and South Euclid, but the same colors for the city of Cleveland and communities that border it--e.g., Lakewood and Fairview. Furthermore, the map shows Shaker Square belonging to Cle schools, not Shaker.... the map also has some curious place names, like "Big Italy", which hasn't existed since the 50's or early 60's when the Interstate highway system took it down.

Residents around ANY airport in any city in the world don't want airport expansion. But the business community around Beachwood i would think likes the airport. I would favor consolidation of charter and air taxi services at BKL, but i would want to keep CGF open for smaller general aviation, as once an airport is gone its gone forever. But i would never drive out to CGF to catch a flight if i had a choice--choosing first BKL, then CLE.

doctabroccoli--each week airlines report to OAG any changes in routes or frequencies regarding what is for sale. i know 2 new frequencies to/from DTW isn't much--approx 100 seats a day, but its at least a little growth--better than nothing and certainly better than any cuts/reductions. This week DL announced a lot of expansion at DTW and MSP (the two big NW hubs). CLE was one of many cities from Detroit with increased service. Service from MSP increased in many markets as well, but not CLE.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Crain's is trying hard to derail the project and Crain's is an influential paper. We gotta fight this thing. The article includes people who have written in--supporting the author's main argument. "Well, my only advice is to organize a letter/phone/e-mail campaign urging your state and federal representatives to revisit this issue. Right now, it appears that Gov. Strickland and a handful of others are so desperate to create even a modest number of jobs that they don't stop to think about what it's adding to our country's long-term debt problem." He's missing the point completely as he says--the investment is OK for HSR, but not what we're building. He never states--or perhaps doesn't know--that the current project is the first step towards HSR. Here is the article, titled "Off Track": http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100205/BLOGS01/100209869

Businesses that are out east like using CGF--if they can--because its closer than BKL or CLE. Businesses downtown like BKL because of its proximity. So, the two airports serve two distinct markets. However, there are business in Beachwood etc that use BKL instead of CGF because it is a better airport and CGF cannot accommodate them--for example: CGF has only one runway and it is 5102 ft. long x 100 ft. BKL has two runways, the longer of which is 6198 x 150 ft. BKL has ARFF (like Hopkins or other airports do) (ARFF=Fire/Rescue), but I don't think CGF has any. BKL is a great airport and should have some scheduled service. (Porter Air's service at Toronto's Downtown Airport would be a logical carrier and they have indicated they were interested in serving the City of Cleveland.)

From Crains, below. Is this a way to drum up business and activity at BKL or just a way to help out the county? If CGF were closed, it may make corporate offices in the eastern suburbs less attractive as a business center and therefore give Downtown an advantage. While I think any strengthening of BKL is important for the city--and as an airport, BKL is far superior facility than the smaller CGF, there is no reason why cuyahoga county can't have 3 airports. Once an airport is closed, its gone forever, and houses and other uses take over the runways. Its getting harder and harder to build new airports anywhere. Article below: Cleveland raises idea of consolidating county airport at Burke Lakefront The city of Cleveland would like Cuyahoga County to close Cuyahoga County Airport in Richmond Heights so that general aviation traffic can be consolidated at city-owned Burke Lakefront Airport. Ricky Smith, director of the city's Department of Port Control, which operates Burke and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, brought that idea to Cleveland City Council's aviation committee this morning at a special committee meeting at Cleveland Hopkins.... http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100203/FREE/100209915

Before the change of presidents at CSU, there was talk of changing the name of CSU. One potential name, which I liked a lot, was "University of Cleveland". True--it makes it easier to attract folks from out of state--but as a name, i think it sounds better despite our familiarity with "Cleveland State" or "CSU". Any updates on this front?- Cleveland: Random Development and News

Public auditorium should come down? That's crazy--its a beautiful structure with a unique theaters/venues. Have you ever been inside? That's the same talk that almost put the wrecking ball to the theaters at Playhouse Square--and look at them today. - Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
