Just came across this petition website to bring the World Cup to the US in 2018 (or 2022?)--and to specific cities. 27 cities are listed. Is there a hotel/motel planned for this block on Rockwell (based on the photo)?

fallout with the Board? that's what it sounds like. Its too bad--it seemed Wasserman was a good, out-of-the box thinker who had a big vision for Cleveland--not the same business as usual.

anyone know what the Clinic plans to put at this location--or are they going to sit on it till they figure it out? Could it be the new national lab that was announced about a year ago?

I just read that the BKL master plan was complete in Jan 2008---do you know where I can find a copy? I checked on the Port Control's website, but didn't see it. (For the record, I favor the 55th Street location--and runway expansion at Burke.)

I was going through some old files the other night and found this 1992 vision for the harbor. Its all here--the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (currently under construction--planned opening 1995); Great Waters Aquarium (planned opening 1998); Mather Museum (opened in 1991); and the Great Lakes Museum of Science, Environment, and Technology (planned opening 1996). Good ol' Muny Stadium is present as well.

Haven't gone over the report in detail yet, but a few observations: 1. Nice to see that they're focusing on the most direct route (e.g., no Akron or Elyria) as this allows for better trip times and thus a greater chance of success (& funding). (I think Akron-CLE should be served by a separate line, maybe connecting CLE-PIT or CLE-Canton.) 2. Revenue is a key factor on whether or not this gets funded. The report does not detail how it arrived at its revenue number or whats included. $12.2m is provided. Is that just ticket revenue or does it include other revenue sources like food and beverage (which is a big part of revenue)? And what comprises the $29.2m in operating costs? As written, the report gives the line a fare box recovery of 40%, which isn't great even by Amtrak standards, though its not the worst state-supported Amtrak line, but towards the bottom of the list. Not seeing how the revenue (and costs) was (were) developed, makes it impossible to really assess. If ticket prices were raised 2% what would that do? 5%? Is food and beverage included or not? If not, the numbers would improve. (There WILL be a food car right?) 3. Assume revenue is maxed out (for example, raising the price 1% would result in a drop in ridership offsetting the revenue increase) and Amtrak cannot operate any cheaper, does the line have to be operated by Amtrak? (I realize that this was an Amtrak study.)

"move an additional 850 employees". Are these 850 jobs being moved from the Clinic's main campus to Independence???

Is it a done deal that if the line is funded, Amtrak would be the operator? from today's Columbus Dispatch: "Amtrak is finishing a study that's expected to show projected Ohio ridership, cost to passengers, how much of a subsidy would be required, and the costs of launching the service. The study is expected by Tuesday." If Amtrak's numbers are too high, could this kill the application for funding? Or does the application note that Amtrak is one potential operator (there are other contractor-operators out there)?

Yet another ferry idea across the lake to canada--this time between Fairport Harbor & Port Dover, Ontario: "Leaving the village of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, (30 miles east of Cleveland) the proposed ferry would operate on a year-round schedule (using ice class vessels in the winter) carrying 2,400 trucks, 1,600 cars and 9,000 daily." On the US side, any ferry should clearly be in Cleveland to maximize cargo/passengers and minimize truck miles, and not way out east. Whatever happened to the Cle-Port Stanley plan? Even if the port moves, this service could move as well. Last I heard, the hold up was on the Canadian side as a result of some inter-Canadian-government squabble. on our side of the pond, NOACA had already commissioned a study for a ferry terminal around W3 St. http://www.inportdover.com/ssm/m/content/article.php?content_id=396

I've never been to the space, so i'm not sure if this suggestion would work, but, could a fine arts cinema move in there? It could show both new (like NYC's Angelica) and old (like CMA's Cinemateque) films. We need a cinema like that downtown.

I would think it must be movable. I'm not sure if that piece of the water is classified as part of the US's navigable waterways, but if it is, per Army Corp of Engineer regs, you cannot build a bridge that will block a waterway, unless you operate that bridge (24/7) to allow access to vessels (just like we have in the Flats). Also--my favorite is Concept E--very classy looking.

we can build another bridge when that time comes, as its long time off (assuming the port does indeed move). this one is supposed to begin construction in 2012.

I was trying to stimulate conversation on the topic--that's all. Its an important topic and i'm interested in it, but personally do not have any insight into how Jackson is, or the other contestants fare. So i am grateful for the insight of clvlndr, above. For some reason George Forbes popped into my head....don't know why....

some initial thoughts-- pic 4--looks horrible---too much glass to fit in with the rest of the district. pic 5--the lower part of the building looks cool--great way to add an historical feel to a modern glass bldg. pic 3--its important to have a constant street wall--which i think is what is happening in this image, but its hard to tell--see W6 between Rockwell and st. Clair on the west side of the street where there is green showing---is that 'behind' the buildings currently existing on this block on W6? (based on pic 1 it seems so--like an elevated park). bigger question--is this project back on? new funding?

when is the cutoff to enter the primary? has it already passed?

To support restaurants, shops, and good/safe student street life, as well as capacity for future growth, i wish these building were much taller--say 12 to 15 stories. Some units could be old-fashioned dorms and others full apartments.
