Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
That statement is exactly why I feel Bibb is very scary. His incompetence will do a lot of damage to the city. Thanks for your statements on Kucinich--I will give them deeper thought as I look at him, Williams, and Kelley. Who are you favoring?

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Of course, the older someone is, the more there is to critique about his/her life and work. Kucinich saved Muny Light. No question about that. No way in Hell Bibb or Basheer would risk everything for one cause, especially against such formidable odds--when all of the corporate structure of the city was against you. What has Jones done? or Sandra Williams or Bibb? Perhaps looking at the 7 candidates, Chrostowski feels that though Kucinich may not have done much in Congress--though he did stand against the Patriot Act and the invasion of Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11)---he is still better than the likes of Bibb or Zack Reed or Basheer. I think Bibb would be an absolute disaster as mayor--he doesn't really get it--and he would make earnest attempts at things and get steamrolled by private interests. He would hurt the city far more than help anything. Bibb can see and talk about the problems of the city, but won't be able to implement smart or lasting changes. He doesn't really understand how the city works--especially compared to Jones, Kelley, Kucinich, and Zach Reed. Bibb is on the absolute bottom of my list, right below DiBello and Basheer. I haven't decided yet who I'm voting for--but my top three are Kucinich, Kelley, and Williams--not necessarily in that order.

CLEVELAND UrbanOhio 2021 meet up - times?
Thanks for the call-out Boomerang_Brian! I'd love to attend but as of now, I am scheduled to be in Chicago for work next week. If my schedule changes, though, I'll be there. Otherwise, have fun everyone and I hope to make the next one.

Cleveland: Population Trends
CLE is listed as one of 19 cities for Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans and Iraqis. The State Dept provides a link to the city's website----Its certainly not very enticing when you have a list of 18 other cities' websites to choose from --- for CLE, no photo of the skyline, or the lake, or people walking around or anything! https://www.clevelandohio.gov/ Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans and Iraqis - Resettlement Options You have three options to influence where you will be placed in the United States: A. You may choose a city from the list of self-select SIV placement options in the table below..... https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/special-immigrant-visas-for-afghans-and-iraqis-resettlement-options.html

uh-huh.... BREAKING news--524pm: In a First, U.S. Declares Shortage on Colorado River, Forcing Water Cuts Arizona farmers will take the initial brunt, but wider reductions loom as climate change continues to affect flows into the river. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/16/climate/colorado-river-water-cuts.html such trends should certainly benefit Ohio.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Many companies in Ohio---at least in Cleveland--have a tough time filling jobs here because people--or at least qualified and decent people--do not want to move to Ohio with its red state backwards reputation. The discussion started here:
-
Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I never said people move because of state politics (though some might). I said was when people DO have to make a move for whatever reason--if they have a choice (e.g., not moving because they need to take care of an elderly parent who is already in a given place)--they move to places they agree with. That's why I'd never move to the south and why some backwards racist anti-abortion ultra-Christian might look fondly upon Ohio, but would not look at Massachusetts. Unless that's the kind of people we want to attract, we need to improve our policies and politics. But given the trend, it will only get worse unless we have sudden change of realization of values or an influx of new, blue-leaning people.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Centennial (925 Euclid Redevelopment)
"Millennia Cos. of Cleveland won final approval Friday, Aug. 6, from the Cleveland City Planning Commission for its conversion of the massive one-time Huntington Building, at 925 Euclid Ave., into apartments with renovated and repurposed bank rotundas and public spaces. Technically, the approval OKs exterior work on the 21-story building with more than a million square feet of space within its ornate exterior. As city planners unanimously approved the designs by Sandvick Architects of Cleveland, they required the developer to bring designs back later for signage and other minor details...." Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
%age of political donations that coming from within the city for each candidate--Jan-Jun 2021: Notable are Kucinich's (best) and Basheer's (scarily low)-and what's notable is that Basheer raised more money than any other candidate Jan-June 2021, meaning tremendous disproportionate influence coming from the suburbs and elsewhere. Also about Basheer, this is interesting: "Margaret Wong, a politically active immigration attorney, gave to every candidate except Jones." Data above and quote is from: https://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/2021/07/kevin-kelley-ends-latest-campaign-finance-reporting-period-with-most-cash-on-hand-of-cleveland-mayoral-candidates.html Interestingly, my top three favorites---even before making this table---happen to be the top three rows of the table. Bibb and Reed would be at the very bottom.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
That's a good point--our backwards increasingly conservative posture is turning away the wealthiest people which could pay a lot in taxes or, as many don't pay a lot of taxes, at least spend lots of money around town in restaurants, cars, stores, etc.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I don't have data or the time to dig for some, but I will say this: politics and quality of life are interconnected. Texas (outside of Austin) and all of the south is pretty hellish to me---backwards, close-minded, racist, etc. So though I have moved around in my life for jobs, I have never ever applied to any jobs in the south---no matter how tantalizing--because there's no way in hell I'd want to live in the south. So, in a way, MY MOVES were directly affected by politics. And I can be certain I am not the only person in the US who thinks this way. There's probably no data source for people who didn't apply to jobs. Decent people are attracted to good places and stay away from bad places. If we want more non-hateful, non-racist, non-backwards people in Ohio, we need better policies (and politics) in the state that will make decent people WANT to be here and apply for jobs here instead of staying away like I do with the south. My company has jobs to fill and can't get people, because so many people don't want to come here. For some, it may be they don't want to move to Cleveland as we have a bad rep as a city (though that is fading), for others, they don''t see "Cleveland" they see "Ohio" and don't want to be in a backwards, trump-supporting state (and that sentiment is increasing).

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
What a surprise! The conservative, corporate, and right-wing supported American Legislative Exchange Council "lauds states that follow conservative economic policies." And even if ALEC were credible, the red states are not just about conservative economic policies, but backwards social ones that are bad for the future of America.
-
Ohio: General Business & Economic News
We need job and population growth in the state and more diversity of jobs and talent in the state. I would not intentionally scare off people who earnestly inquire about the state. We're getting redder and redder and thus increasingly more backwards and will have a lower and lower quality of life. The only way this will change is with an influx of people that aren't backwards that can vote these people out and return Ohio to be a desirable place again. Tell people from Dallas and Arkansas and Alabama that Ohio is cloudy and cold, but not people from the coasts!

Yeah, whatever dude, maybe you should read what the link that you cite says, which is: "The differences between communism and socialism are still debated, but generally English speakers use communism to talk about the political and economic ideologies that find their origin in Karl Marx’s theory of revolutionary socialism, which advocates a proletariat overthrow of capitalist structures within a society; societal and communal ownership and governance of the means of production; and the eventual establishment of a classless society. The most well-known expression of Marx’s theories is the 20th-century Bolshevism of the U.S.S.R., in which the state, through a single authoritarian party, controlled a society’s economic and social activities with the goal of realizing Marx’s theories. Socialism, meanwhile, is most often used in modern English to refer to a system of social organization in which private property and the distribution of income are subject to social control...."

This is cool: "NEW YORK, August 3, 2021 (Newswire.com) - Product Collective, a fast-growing digital media company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, announced today the acquisition of the New York Product Conference (NYPC). Attracting hundreds of attendees each year, the NYPC is held at The Times Center in Manhattan. This year, the in-person event takes place on Nov. 11, making its return after a COVID-forced hiatus in 2020 (a successful virtual event was held in its place attracting over a thousand attendees). The NYPC has played an important role in serving the New York Product Management community for the past several years — drawing attendees from companies like American Express, Instagram, Warby Parker, Mailchimp, and others....." https://www.newswire.com/news/leading-product-management-media-and-events-company-acquires-the-new-21462394#ixzz72WPp30t5

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
If it's someone's nickname, there's no issue. The Cleveland Guardians is not the Cleveland Guardians' nickname---its their (legal) trade name, registered with the state of Ohio in 2017 and first used, according to the 2017 filing in 2013. (Their legal name is CLEVELAND MEN'S ROLLER DERBY LLC). See the official filing here: https://bizimage.ohiosos.gov/api/image/pdf/201700403198. Trade names are real. The TRADE NAME "Cleveland Indians" was just filed on 7/23/21 by the "guardians" baseball team--see here: https://bizimage.ohiosos.gov/api/image/pdf/202120402726 If trade names aren't "real" then you or I could just start using "Cleveland Indians" today (since the baseball team legally abandoned it in July 2021) and do whatever we wanted with it--and yes I know the team is still playing today with that name.

Look at the voter turnout for this election. A few immediate observations: If the poorer, inner-city precincts had a better turn out, Nina may have won; the best turn out (yellow and light orange on the map below) was in the wealthy areas--Bratenahl, Pepper Pike, Beachwood, etc. which probably mostly went for Shontel, being the more mainstream candidate. Downtown, with a generally more informed and more educated base of residents compared to many east side precincts in the city had a pathetically low 0-10% turnout. There's really disappointing. map is from: https://www.livevoterturnout.com/cuyoh/LiveResults/en/Index_15.html
