Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
And yet another organization moving Downtown! Documentary filmmaker sets sights on downtown Cleveland Small staff--12, but the kind of creative company Downtown needs more of. "Shawn Rech, president of Transition Studios, plans to move the documentary film concern to Idea Center, 1375 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland, from Berea in part because he loves the technological nuts and bolts of the place...." THIS PART (I underlined) is particularly notable: "...And by nuts and bolts, he means the computer network and switches left by the prior occupant of the fourth-floor suite. "It already has one-gig fiber. We have to pay for a subscription, but it's already connected to a high-speed fiber network, which could cost $25,000 to do in some suburbs," Rech said in a phone interview...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/documentary-filmmaker-sets-sights-downtown-cleveland

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
@KJP Hey, great article as always, thanks. And good, hopeful news that CBIZ ends up downtown somewhere. But did you have to end the positive article on a potentially negative/worrisome note? "Moen, now with more than 600 HQ employees, has outgrown its 1993 HQ building and has since expanded into leased offices on the other side of I-480 along Country Club Boulevard. With growth continuing, all site options are on the table including a move out of Greater Cleveland."

Ohio General Assembly
WTF!? such insanity. People like Mike Loychik need to be voted out! I don't care who his opponents are both within his R primary and the D in the general, I'll give money to both just to get #$!#%# like him out. This kind of stuff makes us looker dumber and dumber and certainly no one is going to want to invest money or jobs in ohio.

Was able to do a screen shot of the top corresponding MSAs: TO CLE MSA: FROM CLE MSA: https://www.cbre.us/research-and-reports/COVID-19-Impact-on-Resident-Migration-Patterns TAB 12.

Assuming this is accurate. Applying 2.1 persons per household, that means a LOSS of 1,274 people from the CLE MSA in 2020.

Man, that data is hard to use. Couldn't export it into excel---had to manually write numbers. Acc. to the data presented in 2020: CLE MSA moves WITHIN CLE MSA was 143,181. 2020-- to CLE MSA: 170,660; out of MSA: 171,219. To CLE MSA from anywhere in OH (incl CLE): 156,879; From CLE to anywhere in OH (incl CLE): 157,968 TO - FROM CLE and the following places (2020) Akron 5,598 6,422 Columbus 1,554 1,660 NYC 1,275 465 Canton 773 747 LA 673 747 Edit: hopefully @jonoh81or someone else can have better luck on the analysis and can post a table by MSA!

Personal View: Cleveland is poised to become the mecca for AI in medicine "A city once derided as the "Mistake on the Lake" has long since shaken off the pejorative and is now ideally positioned to become the national hub for research and commercialization of artificial intelligence technologies in medicine. Cleveland is poised to drive innovations, thanks to its robust medical ecosystem, access to required data assets, multitude of research centers, culture of collaboration, influx of funding and favorable cost of living...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/opinion/personal-view-cleveland-poised-become-mecca-ai-medicine

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
There was an announcement for a new Indian restaurant in Ohio City a few weeks ago--can't remember the name. Is this that same restaurant or is this a second Indian place to open up in Ohio City? I love Indian food, so I welcome the news and two is better than one if this is the case.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
That's cool. Had no idea what a "gondola-style (two seater) zip line" was, but found a photo about this here: https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2020/12/17/cleveland-metroparks-zoo-to-construct-zip-line-in-2021.

2022 Ohio Gubernatorial Election
^Pretty good video. Heavy on the "toughness" vs. a message of balancing "toughness" with "business growth". I don't know much about her, and in Cleveland, one never hears anything about Dayton. Is she a good mayor? Will she be a good governor? Its pretty early to announce for an election that is 19 months away--perhaps she's trying to ward off any Democratic challengers by doing so?

Cleveland: Population Trends
I never knew this was there (https://dys.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/dys/facilities/cuyahoga-hills-jcf/02-cuyahoga-hills-jcf). Did it move there after the place on 22 St closed? or was 22 St. Juvie Hall just the courts which has moved to 93 and Quincy?

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
I would hope so, as how many amtrak passengers were expected to be users of the landbridge! Most (which is at 3-4am) arrive or depart in passenger cars....

Cleveland: Population Trends
Agreed--interesting info. I love looking at stats--thanks for posting. Found this particularly interesting: Population density---always knew Lakewood was higher than CLE----but so are Univ Hts and Parma Hts--according to the book. CLE ranked 5th. Linndale has an unusually low %age of HH's with 2 people. 8% are 2 people HH. (p. 25) Every other community seems to be in the range of 25-35% on average. Linndale--45% of population speak Spanish at home--biggest of any community. (p.29) In terms of % of jobs in the county, Independence is ranked fourth (ha-ha!), beat out by Westlake #2 and Solon #3 (p.33) For jobs in the City of CLE, 60% of workers commute into the city (from the burbs). (My own commentary here: Some are office, some are not; but for those jobs that could be work from home, I hope those jobs return to the physical office, otherwise that will be a big financial income tax impact to the city if income tax rules let burbs keep that money.) (p. 39) Highland Hills (along the otherwise big money 271 corridor) ranks 3rd in terms of population in poverty (after Linndale and E. CLE) (p.47) (why is this the case?) In North Randall, 78% of Households are renter occupied (highest in county); for comparison, in CLE it is 58%. (p. 59) Map on p. 64 clearly shows--by census track--where housing most recently built around the county Only 72% of CLE's population lives with a 1/4 mile of a transit stop (That's WAY too low) (p.95)

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Richard Knoth, a partner at Baker Hostetler, who said he was running for mayor has yet to formally announce or put up a campaign website. He was interviewed by the City Club in Feb and I think he said he'd have a website up in a few weeks, yet he still doesn't. Is he getting cold feet? Here's the interview: https://www.cityclub.org/forums/2021/02/24/a-conversation-with-richard-m-knoth

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
I agree. I like Amtrak at Tower City for its central location and connections to the rapid. But the tracks and platform should use more of the space to the north like the original union terminal. The station itself could still "use" the river front--the station could have a nice outdoor food deck or something that anyone (passenger or not) could use and enjoy the river. Good place to hang between trains/connections. Lakefront Station would become Riverfront Station. Just kidding regarding the name. But a park/restaurant area would be a better use of the river front than a platform and a track. And future commuter rail to Akron/Columbus could use the station as well as the cuyahoga valley line.

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
Hi @Luke_S You seem very concerned about buses at the Amtrak Station. The Amtrak Station should be located at the best possible location for a rail station---which is in any central part of Downtown. Public Square (Tower City) is a great location. The location should not be driven by where there is space for a (giant) greyhound station. How many people actually take connect between a bus and amtrak, not counting buses that are operating in the service of Amtrak? Very few. So it should not be a driver. Regarding the idea of having a bus station and Amtrak's station at Amtrak's current location (or the new "North coast whatever station" people talked about) is a bad idea as its too remote for the benefits that train travel (and bus travel) brings--service into a city center. Even Greyhound would be hurt by this plan as E 13 and Chester is a much better location than South Marginal.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
from the crain's article: "Rick Buoncore, MAI managing partner, said in an interview that the company needs a campus setting and amenities such as an on-site cafeteria and auditorium to continue its growth. "We don't have that downtown," Buoncore said. "Add free parking and a survey that it will shorten the commute for 90% of our people, and it becomes a no-brainer." He could easily have that downtown. What a loser. I hope he loses a lot of clients and money over this.
