Cleveland: University Circle: Circle Square
Was a joke. But there is a real "pathogen" project. Go to https://www.centerforcleveland.org/current-cle-projects#Midtown and scroll down to "Cleveland Clinic: Global Center for Pathogen Research & Human Health": "Address: On the Cleveland Clinic Campus, most likely around Carnegie and E. 105 St., Midtown."

Not the Possible Pathogen Tower! The Possible Pathogen Tower consists of 39 floors of horrifying possibilities of future pathogens that may be possible to attack and eventually eliminate humankind.

Cleveland: University Circle: Circle Square
This building will be the tallest building in University Circle. The bldg just completed, One University Circle, is 20 stories. The Artisan will be "23" or "24+" stories tall. Depending on the source, I've seen it listed both ways in terms of stories. Either way, its more than 20 stories.

Breaking, great news: Port of Cleveland will issue bonds for 298-unit Artisan apartment tower in University Circle "The developers behind the Artisan, a planned apartment tower on the rim of University Circle, expect to break ground within weeks for the 24-story building. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority's has agreed to issue up to $75 million in taxable bonds for the $109.6 million project, which will rise at the southwest corner of Chester Avenue and Stokes Boulevard. The port's board of directors approved the bond deal during a virtual public meeting on Thursday, March 11...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/port-cleveland-will-issue-bonds-298-unit-artisan-apartment-tower-university-circle Regarding the MLK Library and our discussion here on which must start first, the article says (bolding is mine), "...Steve Rubin, a principal with Midwest Development Partners, told board members that he hopes to come back in a few months to seek financing for Library Lofts, the second planned apartment building at Circle Square. That 207-unit project, with smaller units at more modest prices, will perch above a new Cleveland Public Library branch on Euclid Avenue. It will sit just west of Fenway Manor, a refurbished historic building that's home to low-income seniors. The developer and the library are working out the final details of their project, with the goal of starting construction soon...."

^I'd say the city. The Port Authority doesn't control/maintain any of the bridges across the cuyahoga---the owner does---so for all the lower level bridges, its the city or a railroad. For the high-level bridges (non-movable) its also the owner--so the city, county, or state (in the case of the Innerbelt bridge). I realize the water in this location isn't the Cuyahoga, but the same principle should apply.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
Some are predicting a new surge of cases in April from Spring break traveling/behavior and the new highly contagious B.1.117 (or something like that) variant that is spreading across the US. I read somewhere the number of cases of this variant in Ohio has tripled between Sunday and Tuesday of this week. While the state does NOT genome test every positive case, we don't know how many cases there are---but for however few they do test, it tripled---so that's a big deal. Off-setting this of course is the vaccine deployment. All this to say, I hope 5/3 is not too soon--I would have preferred to see a June or July date. Of course, if cases start spiking up in April as some predict, SW could just push back that 5/3 date---there's still time for such.

Ohio 3rd Frontier Funding focusing on innovation and technology (including advanced medical tech) awarded $48M to CLE area companies out of $73M statewide. That's a healthy proportion and nice to hear, esp as the bulk of medical innovation in the state is in CLE. Northeast Ohio gets a hefty share of Ohio Third Frontier Commission awards "Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, JumpStart Inc. and several other organizations and small companies in Northeast Ohio are among the recipients of a total of nearly $73 million from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission...." The article also lists local recipients of the the Third Frontier's Pre-Seed/Seed Plus Fund Capitalization Program. https://www.crainscleveland.com/technology/northeast-ohio-gets-hefty-share-ohio-third-frontier-commission-awards

Good!: Ohio appeals court upholds firing of Cleveland police officer who killed Tamir Rice CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An appeals court on Thursday declined to reinstate former Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann, who shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014. The city of Cleveland didn’t fire Loehmann for any action he took during the November 2014 killing of Rice, but rather for lying on his initial application about his reason for leaving his prior job at a suburban police department...." The bold above is my own emphasis/outrage, but I'm glad he's fired nonetheless. https://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/2021/03/ohio-appeals-court-upholds-firing-of-cleveland-police-officer-who-killed-tamir-rice.html

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
Did they miss the target due to early releases from County Jail because of covid? I'm joking, but I can't remember, does the DCA population number include people at the county jail? I think the census number does include them? @jonoh81may know the answer to that.

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
"53 businesses ATTRACTED/RETAINED" I get that retention is important, but more meaningful is 'attraction'. too often these civic groups like teamneo and downtown cle alliance bury the real number of companies attracted by saying "xxxxxx companies attracted/retained." per the report "The center city's residential population kept growing, though it didn't break the 20,000 mark the alliance hoped to surpass last year. At the end of 2020, an estimated 19,645 people lived downtown, up from 18,800 at the end of 2019, Deemer said." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/downtown-cleveland-added-residents-2020-despite-disruptions-pandemic

Regarding Michael Stanley, "Why couldn’t the guy who outpaced the likes of Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones by setting attendance records at the old Blossom Music Center ever become more than a blip on the national music scene?" Uh-oh.... Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel is on the verge of closing, lender says in receivership petition "The lender seeking to foreclose on the Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel is asking for a court-appointed receiver to step in to avert a looming shutdown of the 484-room property. Late Monday, March 8, the Cleveland International Fund filed an emergency request for an outside expert to take control of Optima 777 LLC, the company that runs the hotel. In a filing in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, the lender says the Westin is "in imminent danger of closing on March 19, 2021, unless a receivership is put in place." Judge Cassandra Collier-Williams scheduled a hearing on the matter for Wednesday, March 17...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/westin-cleveland-downtown-hotel-verge-closing-lender-says-receivership-petition?utm_source=breaking-news-alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20210309&utm_content=hero-readmore

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
So the Report about the new jobs (in the environment of losing 90k jobs) is posted on TeamNEO's website. You can see/download it here: https://teamneo.org/news/team-neo-annual-report-showcases-regional-recovery-and-success/ from their site: "Team NEO released its annual performance and impact report today, sharing that the organization, in partnership with JobsOhio and the Northeast Ohio Economic Development Network, worked on 84 projects that will generate more than 8,500 jobs, $449.1 million in annual payroll and $3.35 billion in capital investment for the region. The network also focused on offsetting pandemic-related job losses by working with organizations that chose the Northeast Ohio Region for their expansion. These efforts resulted in the retention of almost 11,500 jobs." The part I bolded above is interesting. Many of the 88k lost jobs may be in hospitality/restaurants. They'll eventually come back. But $3B in new capital is really new, so is a real success despite the net loss of 80k jobs.

Renaissance Cleveland Hotel owner plans substantial renovations at historic property "The owner of the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is preparing to launch a substantial makeover of the 102-year-old landmark in the heart of downtown. Skyline Investments Inc., the Canadian hospitality company that has controlled the hotel since 2015, revealed its intentions in a recent filing with the Ohio Development Services Agency. The company expects to apply for $2 million in state historic preservation tax credits this month to help finance the $20 million first phase of a larger project...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/renaissance-cleveland-hotel-owner-plans-substantial-renovations-historic-property

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
For fun, shall we start taking bets on the 2020 Ohio number? Let's see who can get the closest! For reference, here are the historical numbers: 1970 10,652,017 9.7% growth from previous Census 1980 10,797,630 1.4% 1990 10,847,115 0.5% 2000 11,353,140 4.7% 2010 11,536,504 1.6% 2019 (est.) 11,689,100 1.3% (2010 to 2019 est growth) (Official estimate) It would be great to break the 12 million mark, but that would mean a growth rate of 4.018% from 2010. I'm going to be a little optimistic and put as at 2.78% growth (meaning the 2019 estimate is too low), so: 2020 11,857,219

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
The justice center---for court rooms--is in a good location. And the block is huge. Could a new court tower be built in the same block (along with other bldgs)? If so, where would the court of common pleas and CLE muny courts conduct business during this time---is there a temporary facility that could be used or built? Old juvenile court on E. 22 is still there and vacant. Anything else? The Cleveland Playhouse? The courts must be downtown. "Opportunity" corridor makes no sense for the courts.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower at Erieview & Galleria Renovation
This is a practical and market comment not a political one---with full respect to X's warning above. When I see "Trump" signs on a business or facility, I avoid that place as I'm sure others do as well. So, in the case of the Galleria, putting up such signs only means that businesses in there will die faster. Then again, who knows, maybe that is Kassouf's intent. Putting up "Trump" signs may be good for business in Alabama or Arkansas, but not in Cleveland. While there are Trump supporters in Cleveland, there are many more on the other side of the fence. Hence, such signage in Cleveland is bad for business and bad for development.

Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
True and I never said any group didn't deserve or shouldn't have quality healthcare, nor that the demand for medical care doesn't exist. I simply stated that its not surprising that top-ranked hospitals are not in the South given that the South is the South. True as well--that's probably why Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic have opened up outposts in Florida.
