Any progress on Cinema City? For the best places to live and work as a moviemaker, outside of NY and LA, Albuquerque got the #1 spot, followed by Toronto, then Atlanta. CLE is #12. Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker in 2022 January 25, 2022: "12. Cleveland Cleveland continues to move up in our ranking because of increasing production activity in the area, thanks to the state’s $40 million commitment to a 30% rebate based on Ohio expenditures for projects that have a minimum $300,000 spend. Oscar-nominated director Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) filmed his latest feature White Noise locally in 2021, utilizing the surrounding suburbs as well as the downtown area to bring Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel to life. Nick Jonas was also in town for another Jersey Boys adaptation, and the World War II submarine thriller Operation Seawolf, starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Grillo, also shot in town. According to the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, approximately $140 million was spent on film productions in the area last year, and an additional $25 million was spent on television productions. The industry will further flourish upon the completion of Cinema City, the vision of local filmmaker Marquette Williams, who is in the process of developing a 150,000-square-foot studio, with four sound stages, that will also double as a fertile training ground for below-the- line talent." https://www.moviemaker.com/best-places-to-live-and-work-as-a-moviemaker-in-2022 [cross-posted in ranks of cities]

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Some CBIZ news from Kansas City: "CBIZ Inc., a Cleveland-based financial, benefits and insurance services provider (NYSE: CBZ), and Kansas City-based Mayer Hoffman McCann PC, an independent CPA firm led by President Andy Burczyk that is closely affiliated with CBIZ, have brought one of the nation's biggest accounting firms into their ranks. At the start of 2022, CBIZ and MHM acquired New York-based Marks Paneth LLP in pieces. CBIZ acquired the non-attest assets, and MHM acquired the attest assets. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, CBIZ will pay a minimum of $81.25 million and a maximum of $156.5 million, depending on the firm's future performance...." https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2022/01/24/cbiz-mayer-hoffman-mccann-buy-marks-paneth-cpa.html What are "attest assets" vs "non-attest assets"?

Cleveland: Population Trends
@LlamaLawyerIts a bit inappropriate as it suggests that their business is equally popular or used in both 2020 and 2021 in all cities and states in the country. "Moving data calculated from over 90,000 moves serviced in 2021 via HireAHelper.com and its affiliates contrasted against 2020 data." "MOVED OUT: By ratio 1. San Jose, CA -67.6% 8. Cleveland, OH -50.6%" I never even heard of "Hireahelper.com".

Willoughby is part of Cleveland. If it was Erie, PA, that would be notable, but Willoughby is certainly part of Cleveland.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
What's keeping this fire going? And couldn't running over live fire damage some stuff on the underside of the rail cars? And do they start and lay fires for miles and miles? Seems kindof crazy/irresponsible---what if wind picks up some embers and burns down some houses or something? What am I missing here?

Cleveland: Downtown: Gateway Megaproject
That's a good looking project. That Detroit tower is 685’-4”tall--at 15' per story, that's 46 stories. That (or something a little taller) would be very cool for the city. I absolutely HATED draft 2 and/or 3 of Stark's plan where the tall (and wide) building was not flush or parallel with Prospect, but instead at some strange angle, thereby killing the street wall and full urban effect. It wasn't lined up to Huron either--just outright ugly. This was it:

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
And how likely would this be?

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^I know its physically connected to the convention center, but the extra meeting rooms makes a lot of sense i think for conferences as well as smaller events. Does this mean the showroom concept---for which the Medical Mart was built--is dead?

Cleveland: Downtown: Gateway Megaproject
Great article as always, thanks @KJP. If the office tower is supposed to hold quicken loans mortgage folks and benesch and with room to grow, it be nice if they added some speculative space as well, so add say, 20-25 floors as the market always welcomes new modern space which we haven't had since the E&Y tower many years ago. Under this approach, it would be 50-55 stories sitting atop 8 stories of parking, for a 58-63-story bldg. In that way, it will be a height improvement over the Stark concept that got everyone excited. The two-25 story bldgs didn't do much---it was the tall tower that caught everyone's attention in Stark's initial plans.

Reported sequel to 'A Christmas Story' might not be filmed in Cleveland "CLEVELAND — Nearly 40 years after it first came out, multiple reports say "A Christmas Story" is getting a sequel -- with original Ralphie actor Peter Billingsley in talks to return. Warner Bros. and Legendary will be handling production. Deadline reports that the sequel will premiere on HBO Max. However, the sequel will be filmed far from Cleveland, in Hungary...." https://www.wkyc.com/article/entertainment/movies/reported-sequel-a-christmas-story-may-not-film-cleveland/95-bf776e70-e482-472a-926f-e41502f3221d

This can't be accurate re the amount of VC that cleveland gets is it? Cleveland - Venture capital funding: $19 million Columbus, Ohio - Venture capital funding: $573 million Austin - Venture capital funding:$799 million Denver - Venture capital funding: $709 million Nice we made this list of "10 best cities for entrepreneurs in 2022" but that $19M just looks atrocious. https://www.thezebra.com/resources/research/best-cities-for-entrepreneurs/

Cleveland: Hough: Development and News
So with all the new units added to Hough--say new stuff like Axis and bldgs at Chester and 101 already complete and the new projects like Addis View and the one @KJPjust announced, how many new units will Hough have, say in 2024 vs 2019? At its population peak Hough had 60 or 70k people I think; though the housing condition was poor, so that wasn't considered a good number. But if the housing conditions are good and there are amenities in the neighborhood including places to shop and eat, Hough could certain be home to at least 40-50k people.

Dept of Defense wants a refund AGAIN (last time was 2019) from TransDigm for excess profit: "The inspector general "found that TransDigm's business model is specifically designed to raise prices on defense contracts," House Oversight Committee chairwoman Carolyn Maloney said ahead of a Wednesday, Jan. 19, hearing on the topic." "An audit by the Pentagon's inspector general found the company's excess profit amounted to $20.8 million — or more than half of $38.3 million it collected on 153 sole-source contracts from 2017 through mid-2019 that the watchdog reviewed. A previous audit issued in 2019 found $16.1 million in excess profit on $29.7 million in contracts from 2015 to 2017, and the company eventually refunded that amount." https://www.crainscleveland.com/manufacturing/pentagon-seeks-refunds-pressure-piles-spare-parts-maker-transdigm-group-inc I don't know much about TransDigm if they're an upstanding company or not. Would love to hear anyone's insights here!

Lake Erie
Does the entire lake really freeze over to safe walking depths? Or was that the case in 78 but not anymore? I thought the Coast Guard regularly cuts up the lake in winter so it doesn't fully freeze over.

Take a zoomed in photo of Downtown from the river to the innerbelt and post it here - certain street changes there will give further clues to the date.

Cleveland Videos
I was told that verbally by one of the caretakers who gave me a tour of the tunnels back in the 1980s---just a fact that I had never verified. So thanks for your response 10 yrs later! I just looked it up as well and got this interesting tidbit: "The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument...finally opened on July 4, 1894, and it continues to be free for the public to visit. In its interior, a series of marble tablets list the names of brave residents that served. It was eventually discovered that the names of 140 black soldiers were omitted, an act which was corrected in 2013." https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/ohio/cleveland/civil-war-cle/

Cleveland: Random Development and News
"....Sustainable Community Associates plans to seek money to re-develop the former Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School at 3575 W. 130th St. in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Cleveland. The building sits on 2.2 acres and the plan is for about 40 apartments that cater to middle-income renters, said Josh Rosen, co-owner of Sustainable Community Associates. Rosen said his group intends to seek about $400,000 for asbestos removal and demolition and that the overall project will cost an estimated $8 million...." Can't really tell from the article, but I hope this planned project doesn't intend to demolish Nathanial Hawthorne school----its a beautiful old bldg. Its photo is in the article.

Cleveland: Mayor Justin Bibb
I'm not mad! I'm perplexed. Its probably not a legal issue, but it certainly just makes Cleveland look stupid---that we have a mayor that needs to be loved so bad he holds a fake swearing-in for himself after he was already sworn in. On more serious grounds, it begs the question, if this is how he thinks, what else is in store for us? Will he turn out to be Dennis the Sequel as some have called him (I never did)? I hope not.

Lorain County Discussion
I'm not sure what you mean. I know they're different municipalities. If Elyria starts booming it will spread into the geographically-advantaged city of Lorain. I mentioned the sign for the continuity of the discussion on the thread and as a joke--I don't really think a civic-pride Lorain sign results in economic projects in Elyria. What is the point you're trying to make?

Cleveland: Mayor Justin Bibb
If you mean on posts about meaningful things Bibb is or isn't doing, he hasn't done anything. But give the poor guy a break. He's only been in office for 7 days!
