Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
Thanks. I didn't know that. Digging further, it seems at the time of the ICI purchase, Glidden itself was owned by Hanson Trust, a UK holding company, which had purchased Glidden from a company called SCM Corp. "Imperial Chemical Industries has purchased most of the paint, coatings, resins, and adhesives business of Cleveland-based Glidden from the U.K. holding company Hanson Trust for $580 million in cash. The acquisition not only makes ICI the biggest single paint producer in the world but substantially increases the British giant's presence in the North American marketplace. Glidden, a former subsidiary of SCM Corp., was included in Hanson Trust's purchase of SCM earlier this year." https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/cen-v064n034.p004#:~:text=Imperial Chemical Industries has purchased, for %24580 million in cash.

For the record, I have no beef with Pittsburgh---it was more about a rival paint company. Then again, Glidden Paint---a Cleveland company--moved to Pittsburgh--and then became part of PPG, so maybe it is partly a Pittsburgh thing!

The PPG bldg in Pittsburg is 635 ft, 40-stories. From this perspective, I hope the SHW execs will recognize that and build their building at least 700 feet and at least 45 stories.....(at least someone who can reach them should tell them so!)

^Cool. Did they get conceptual approval from CPC?

Frankfort is not a narrow alley---its a three-lane street, one lane of which is used for parking. Please do not advocate for more street closures or the privatization of city streets.

^Did the bldg get approval? Looks like it was set to go before city planning today.

According to the drawing, the tiny bldg on public square is set back from Superior---that's quite horrible if it stays that way.

@KJP & others---regarding "Innovation Square" I thought it was the corner of Hudson & 105 per an earlier post and article by KJP. Or is it 105 and Cedar? or Carnegie? as suggested in the few posts above? Or is it not a street corner at all, but something else? Also is it an official city-designated square or just name given by its developer?

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Jackson has yet to say either way whether or not he will run in 2021, but at least he's being smart about Burke Lakefront and not jumping on the silly bandwagon that it should be closed: Q: Are you standing by your position that Burke Lakefront Airport should remain open as an airport? Jackson: Burke is part of our airport system and until such time as a development and developers can come and address all of the environmental concerns that would exist with developing that property and be able to build the structures in a way that would be stable, which means it would be very expensive to get down to bedrock and all that other kind of stuff… Whenever they come with that kind of plan that does not ask for government to pay for it, then I’ll consider it. Until such time, it is part of our airport system and to talk about it as anything other than that is just a fantasy. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2021/02/q-a-with-cleveland-mayor-frank-jackson-and-planning-director-freddy-collier-jr-reveals-thinking-behind-building-the-21st-century-city-symposium.html

The building is quite small. Don't let the wide-angle images fool you, its not a big buidling. I don't know why they built is so tiny. It's at most two stories above grade, so maybe 3 total if there is a one-level basement.

Ohio Ski Resorts
^In addition to natural landforms, the business case must be there as well. Ski resorts in CLE work because of the population even if the runs aren't very long. As there isn't much population in SE Ohio, the hills would have to be spectacular to get people to spend hours on the road to get there.

^Man, we gotta vote these Jesus people out. Portman, for example--who already said he wasn't going to run again--didn't have to worry about re-election, could have voted to do the right thing to convict trump, but he voted against it. Way to kill any possible legacy he may have had.

What's up with Ohio's funky winery-shipping-to Ohio laws? "Ohio Limited winery direct shipping. Ohio residents may have up to 24 cases of wine per year shipped to their home from small wineries making 250,000 gallons of wine or less per year. Retailer shipping prohibited." Look at Ohio on this map compared to the rest of the US: https://www.winespectator.com/articles/us-wine-shipping-laws-state-by-state-50258

Cleveland: The Term "Northeast Ohio"
Yes they are different geographies---greater cleveland and one that stretches from CLE to canton to Youngstown. The problem is people are now REPLACING Cleveland or Greater CLE with the term NEO. Look at almost ANY news story right now--you'll see stuff like "3 people shot last night in Northeast Ohio"---and ALL will be in Cuyahoga County. The misuse of the term is what is so dangerous. Wrongfully using NEO over "Cleveland" doesn't add weight and gravitas to us, it slowly destroys us.

Cleveland: The Term "Northeast Ohio"
ColDayMan--sorry--I did not mean to offend Columbus in any way---my jab and issue here is with Cleveland, not Columbus. Columbus--and everyone--would be right to think of Clevelanders as fools as they intentionally drop their own city name in lieu of the name of the state which is, in many ways, the opposite of itself--Ohio is considered rural and agricultural and conservative--and Cleveland is none of those. So Cleveland is only hurting itself by intentionally misrepresenting itself.
-
Cleveland: The Term "Northeast Ohio"
That is true. But our OWN paper, cleveland.com, belittles Cleveland by ALWAYS putting "Ohio" after "Cleveland".
-
Cleveland: The Term "Northeast Ohio"
But the problem is PEOPLE IN CUYAHOGA county---or "Greater Cleveland" say NEO when they are referring to cuyahoga or greater cleveland---as the NEO term has wrongfully replaced "greater cleveland". I've seen people--people in the 20s and 30s--say "I'm from Northeast Ohio" and if you press them----they're from a Cleveland suburb. No other city does that to kill their own brand. Columbus must be laughing all the way to the bank--because all that social media and advertising and all that---people hear "Ohio". so if they want to move the biggest place in ohio---they find Columbus and open an office or plant there. Columbus has been jealous of Cleveland for decades and now they must just think we're idiots.
-
Cleveland: The Term "Northeast Ohio"
We had that---it was "Greater Cleveland". "Northeast Ohio" to describe Cleveland and the suburbs makes absolutely no sense and just sounds really stupid and replaces "Cleveland" as a brand and identity with "Ohio" which most people outside of this region think of as Trump-loving farmers.

For anyone who missed Bibb at the City Club, know that all events are archived and free. I missed it at 12 today, but will watch the recording in a bit. Would be interested to hear what others thought of him.

Officially, you may exit the 14-day quarantine requirement if you get a covid test on Day 4 of your quarantine and the result is negative: "For any traveler to New York State from out of state, exempting the contiguous states, the new guidelines for travelers to test-out of the mandatory 14-day quarantine are below: For travelers who were in another state for more than 24 hours: Travelers must obtain a test within three days of departure from that state. The traveler must, upon arrival in New York, quarantine for three days. On day 4 of their quarantine, the traveler must obtain another COVID test. If both tests comes back negative, the traveler may exit quarantine early upon receipt of the second negative diagnostic test." https://forward.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory The bolding above is mine. Ohio is ALMOST a contiguous state to western NY state--I mean, we're only in PA on I-90 for 45 minutes or so, no?
