Cleveland: Brooklyn Centre / Old Brooklyn: Development and News
^Good to hear. What kind of "ambitious projects" are planned, if you able to share?

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Another company from the burbs heading to the central city: Digital marketing agency Fathom finds a new home in an old building in the Flats "A growing digital marketing agency plans to shed its suburban address next year, trading leased offices in Valley View for a newly renovated home on the west bank of the Flats. That company, Fathom, employs just over 80 people and aims to double in size over the next five years. And its executives are confident there's still unmatched value in bringing clients and employees together, face-to-face, despite a pandemic that has kept them apart since March...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/digital-marketing-agency-fathom-finds-new-home-old-building-flats

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
New apartment bldg slated on W. 25 between the Porco Tiki Lounge and bridge over Train Ave. Not technically Ohio City, but it is close and can be seen as a result of the booming development in Ohio City proper. Will likely be 4-5 stories and up to 200 units per the Crains article. "Mavrek Development, a Chicago real estate developer, has purchased the SASS Automotive & Wrecking Co. property at 2487 W. 25th St. near the West Side Market, and it plans to develop an apartment building on the site. If your first thought is, "What site is that?," you wouldn't be alone. While SASS has a street-level address, the bulk of the nearly acre site is several feet lower and currently serving as a repository for junked cars. The site's size is clearer from the West 20th Street side, which dead-ends nearby...." This is noteworthy: "That Mavrek, through Treo Development LLC, paid $1.3 million to the seller, a local investor group named Cle Vue LLC, is the other break from Cleveland development past. It reflects the run-up of Ohio City and Tremont land values: The site carried a fair market value of just $330,000 for property tax purposes...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/chicago-developer-has-apartments-planned-west-25th-street-site

Is Avon cheating the City of Cleveland out of money? And why isn't Cleveland demanding payment? "NOACA developed its new policy in part as a response to a bitter debate in 2007 over whether the agency would approve the I-90 Nagel Road interchange in Avon in eastern Lorain County, a project funded by the city, developers and local businesses. Avon overcame opposition on the NOACA board by agreeing to share income taxes from new businesses with Cleveland, which expected to lose tax base as a result of the project.....Yet William Logan, Avon’s current finance director, said in an email Friday that the city never made any payments related to the agreement over the interchange. “To date there have been no income tax sharing payments with Cleveland or any other community that signed the agreement,’' he wrote." https://www.cleveland.com/news/2020/12/if-approved-new-noaca-policy-on-highway-interchanges-will-face-quick-test-in-2021-over-sprawl-versus-regional-equity.html Was there an agreement made? If so, why hasn't Avon paid and why hasn't Cleveland city officials pursued what its owed?

Edgewater Cleveland Photo Tour (Nov. 2020)
Great photo set, thank you! So many nice homes in Edgewater. That little pebble beach to the west of that parking lot is Perkins Beach. Hard to find a photo of it anywhere; I found only one and its just part of the beach--and you can see Edgewater Beach in the distance to the right: https://www.centerforcleveland.org/donate

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
For all you people who want the WFL to be a loop---how would it operate? For example, would it be: one service clockwise in the loop with another service counter clockwise in the loop with the shaker trains running from shaker to somewhere along the loop and then turn back to shaker? where would that station be? Or would all Shaker Trains use the loop, say clockwise, while another train operated exclusively counterclockwise in only the loop?

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I think THOUSANDS would want to live there if it is made into a real neighborhood--not just a bunch of apt bldgs with nothing nearby. There has to be walkable bars, restaurants--both nice and cheap (chipotle, cheap chinese, etc), dry cleaner, drug store or two, a few 7-11's or something similar to buy drinks/beer/quick small grocery items, a few coffee shops, etc. An edit to my post, given the post that follows it: the "real neighborhood" i'm talking about should be just that---not one designed to be next to a stadium to accommodate stadium crowds---it should be a real neighborhood--not built for 8 days per year, but for 365 days a year that is COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT of the stadium being there.

I think the bigger questions are--are the warehouses on those docks no longer used or viable? certainly not worth destroying for a sporting event if they are. Also, isn't it strange that the sports commission will implement the demolition and removal?

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
^Thanks. I wish that got built.

Cleveland: Downtown: Skyline 776 (City Club Apartments)
I don't remember where--just remember it after reading it somewhere and it stuck in my head---probably because I thought the start of December in CLE is a strange groundbreaking date with winter just beginning...

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
^A one-way loop guarantees no one will take it. if the loop is station 1 to 10 in that order, one can easily get from station 5 to 6, in say 2 minutes. But if a one-way loop, to get from 6 to 5, you'd have to go 6-7-8-9-10-1-2-3-4-5--that makes no sense. And if no one takes it you won't get the ridership numbers KJP cited that you need to get the federal dollars. And even if you did, no one wants to take a system that goes only one way. I'm not sold on the loop to begin with---but certainly not if its only one way.

KJP--how much does it cost per mile two build a two track subway tunnel? And how much would an underground station cost?

City Club groundbreaking was supposed to be today, December 1st. Did it happen? Weather today is perfect for a groundbreaking ceremony!

Cleveland: Public Health
Good news--$42M donation to Metro! "MetroHealth is receiving a $42 million gift — by far the largest in its history — from JoAnn and Bob Glick to support programs that aim to reverse health inequities and improve community health in Greater Cleveland." https://www.crainscleveland.com/health-care/metrohealth-receives-historic-42-million-gift [cross posted in CLE Public Health and Metro threads]

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^I agree. But my point was, the money CLE and Cinci send to Columbus props up the economy which then grows jobs---everything from McDonalds and cleaners to university professors and lawyers--the demand in new jobs creates population growth. But I agree, I'd rather not open that can of worms again! This is a good discussion on domestic migration.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^Cleveland always had good international migration to the city which offset some of the losses to the burbs and outer counties. However, covid plus trump and his policies against immigrants (and his inaction on covid and his hurting America globally) likely hurt this.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^Oh, okay. It is true though that CLE, Cincy, Toledo, etc do subsidize Columbus--whether through OSU or state govt that props up the city, adding many jobs and growth. Many in Columbus dispute this though--they must not realize that everyone in the state pays state income tax, not just them.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
why will it lead to an eventual downfall?
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
No--not good. You want a strong central county, not a weak one. Movements from Cuyahoga to Lorain when Cuyahoga is not growing mean sprawl--and that's bad for everyone.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Will be interesting to see, if we ever can, the impact of covid on population migration.
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Looking at Metro Cleveland, here are the six outer counties for migration TO Cuyahoga: Not sure if Medina is so accurate.....
-
Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
More info. I added up ALL of the counties vs. Cuyahoga. Total migration was -11,791, MOE +/- 47,361. Of course, the other population factors are natural increases (births less deaths) and international migration. In those two categories, Cuyahoga should have positive numbers. (For 2020 and 2021, Covid could affect the natural numbers.)

More fun with the dataset. Curious to know where CLE stands with the main cities of the top 20 MSAs. I added the five counties of NYC into one line then re-ranked all the US counties to accommodate that change. Then listed the CLE-Top 20 in order of migration to CLE (Cuyahoga County). I included a 'total' line--this is the total of the top 20. Chicago is ranked 676---this is out of 689 lines.
