  1. ^good way to keep costs down: "New York City will become the company’s sole corporate headquarters, the company said."
  2. Industry on the move: Tech experiencing strong job growth in Cleveland February 3, 2020 "Cleveland's tech industry is experiencing strong job growth. Local employers posted 222 new jobs over the past week and 396 new jobs in the last month, more than any other local industry, according to ZipRecruiter, a leading online employment marketplace...." https://hoodline.com/2020/02/industry-on-the-move-tech-experiencing-strong-job-growth-in-cleveland
  3. Cleveland Marriott Airport at I-71 and W. 150 St. is set for auction later this month. It has 372 rooms. It was apparently hurt by all the new hotel rooms Downtown: "The property suffered as the Cleveland hotel market expanded rapidly the last few years, particularly with new hotels downtown. For decades before new hotels were built downtown in the 1990s the property was known for lodging visitors traveling here to do business downtown." Though hotel rooms were added Downtown, the economy picked up as well--which should have balanced things out. Not many non-Downtown hotels can claim easy rapid transit access to Downtown, University Circle, and Hopkins Airport. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/auction-set-month-troubled-marriott-cleveland-airport?utm_source=afternoon-report
  4. Nearwest side: Astrup Bldg on W. 25: "Construction workers are at work transforming the former Astrup Awning Plant to The Astrup Community Arts Center, 2937 W. 25th St. after financial experts hired by developer Rick Foran closed a $12.4 million financial package for it in late December with 14 sources of capital. As a historic renovation project, the work is most apparent from the Castle Avenue side of the building, where windows have been removed and dumpsters are filling with material from the building's interior. The structure started life in 1911 as the home of a sailmaker for ships, but was best known in recent decades as an awning-maker under the Astrup name. Foran hopes a law firm or other professional services firm may take some office space in the renovated building, but most of it is spoken for by a half-dozen organizations serving the Clark-Fulton area and its Hispanic community, from arts organizations, nonprofits and social crisis services to local businesses...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/stan-bullard-blog/west-side-continues-gain-more-realty-projects there may be some other projects in that article also of interest.

Also, Case has 1505 students from China (grad and undergrad)--13% of all students. How many of them went home for Christmas break? Certainly not all and not all are from Wuhan, but definitely some are or some bumped into others from Wuhan in their hometowns or in airports. Then throw in CSU, BW, Kent State, Oberlin, etc. Besides this there is lots of business travel between China and Cleveland.
  7. In response to UA dropping CLE-LGA, AA has, at least for the summer, changed their equipment from 44-seat E-140's to the larger E-175s. Will still be 4x daily, given that LGA is slot constrained, but the change of equipment means an increase to 304 daily seats from 176 on AA.
  8. ^Rocky River is not a "small town"--its a suburb of Cleveland. Why would the PD even say such crap? Wooster or Warrren may be "small towns" but an obvious suburb of the Cleveland. Also, the caption under the photo says, "Michael Chernus, born and raised in Rocky River and now a successful New York actor, reminisces about his hometown, life and career." There isn't a hospital in Rocky River--or one 30 or so years ago--looking at this age. So that means he was either born at home or more shoddy PD reporting.

Who cares? You should. There's no knowing where this is going. You can't trust the numbers out of China---plus even if they wanted to earnestly test everyone, or really understand the causes of deaths, they don't have the manpower or resources to do so. Read this really sad story about the current state of things in Wuhan: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/02/world/asia/china-coronavirus-wuhan.html Impacts to our health aside, this will be a major impact on the global--and local--economy. There are Cleveland companies that manufacture parts in China. And sell things in China. All kinds of supply chains will be disrupted. And then there is China as a market itself. GM, for example, sold more cars in China than it did in the US last year. Apple does most of its production in China. You think ipones and computers are expensive now? They may just be doubling prices. And on the lower end of things, isn't all the stuff in Walmarts across the US made in China? Regarding the pneumonia post you cited---with 170 deaths---I already posted that---its how I started this thread. If you wanted to minimize the coronavirus, though, you could have said that 600 people have already been hospitalized in Cuyahoga county this winter from the flu. That's also a scary number. Whole schools are closing, like the elementary school in Bay Village. But back to the Wuhan Coronavirus---I wouldn't be so dismissive about it. This whole thing is just getting started.

^If other cities have at-large seats, how do they do them? Are some seats for specific wards/districts and some are at-large? And what cities do this? I'm glad this thing was taken off the ballot. Lowering pay was just crazy (and sounds vindictive) and reducing seats also not a good idea. I remember when we had 33-members for Council. How would any committee work get done with only 9 members? everyone would be on the same committees. Makes no sense for a city the size and stature of Cleveland.

7th US case confirmed, in California. No word yet from CDC on the two students at Miami University of Ohio.
  12. Spirit adds CLE-Cancun effective 14Feb, 4x weekly. Also, they are adding additional daily flights to FLL, MCO, LAS and MYR. http://ir.spirit.com/file/Index?KeyFile=402528013
  13. ^Borders on a scam. I guess its okay if you WANT roommates but don't know anyone to room with---sounds no different though than living in official campus housing.
  14. ^Per that link---they are listing prices---whether 1,2,3,4 BR ---PER PERSON. Is this some kind of dormitory set up? If I rent an apt---i should be able to put as many people as I want in it up to any restrictions in the lease. I've never paid PER PERSON before.
  15. ^from the article: "Public filings list a Denver-area phone number for the company, 1900 East 6th Street LLC, and a tax-mailing address that turned out to be a mailbox at a UPS store in Fairview Park." All we have to do ---and we can do this in shifts--is hang out at the UPS store to see who comes in to check the mail and then talk to that person--even if its just a messenger going to collect the mail.

The guy who is 6th confirmed US case--the husband of infected woman who returned to Chicago from Wuhan--was just in Cleveland. "...Ohio Department of Health spokeswoman Melanie Amato confirmed to 19 News that the husband was recently in Cleveland, but he did not show coronavirus-like symptoms during his time in the city.....Amato could not immediately provide a timetable of his stay in Cleveland, and could not confirm whether or not he was contagious." Remember, CDC says, its contagious even before a person has symptoms. https://www.cleveland19.com/2020/01/31/man-infected-with-coronavirus-recently-visited-cleveland/

WHO officially declares a global health emergency. In addition to noting the severity, it allows access to funds to address the coronavirus. "The decision reversed the organization’s decision just a week ago to hold off such a declaration. Since then, W.H.O. officials said, thousands of new cases in China and clear human-to-human transmission in several other countries — now including the United States — warranted a reconsideration of that decision by the agency’s expert committee...." https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/30/health/coronavirus-world-health-organization.html

  19. ^maybe. but I thought the planned new buildings are much taller, granted they are slightly west of E9, they are further north so in direct alignment with BKL's main runway.

^cause if you thought you had the coronavirus, you could be dead within a week (and could infect many others around you). So calling for help makes sense. Fever + Cough + having just been in China = sufficient combination of factors to warrant attention/observation/isolation. CDC guidelines right now. First person-to-person transmission confirmed in the US. A person who had not been to China got it from someone (his wife) who just returned. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/30/world/asia/coronavirus-china.html
  21. Thanks. Seems strange to have bldg downtown that is for one and only restaurant. very suburban.... seems like it could have easily have had an upstairs with a least some offices/housing units.
  22. ^Wait---that whole bldg is Neuvo (and related)?
  23. ^Thanks. For a moment I was thinking it was the same bldg. Harbor Verandas are apartments. Is the bldg with Neuvo also apartments or are they offices?

1st case confirmed in India. Very crowded conditions there and they won't be able to take containment actions like China. In Ohio, we should hear by the end of week on whether the 2 students at Miami Univ of Ohio which are confirmed or not. Hopefully its just a flu.
  25. ^Is the Mexican place still there or do these replace it? I hope they are additions...
