  1. I don't think anyone here is advocating for widening university, only keeping it to not make Tremont into a suburb. What happened on the CLE-Shaker Hts border--what trail is that?
  2. Will the path be a transportation option, though? Can people turn off it onto all the numbered streets? Or will be isolated from the street grid, meaning its not transportation--just a pathway NEXT to it? Your post has a lot of things in it. I'll comment on one thing: "As more 'outsiders' with money move into the Ohio City/D-S/Tremont's they're going to have to learn to reduce their dependence on cars - and a dense neighborhood would help with this greatly." A big issue nationally---as suburbanites are moving into urban neighborhoods--is that they want that suburban convenience that they're used to---so that reduced dependence on cars---while i agree is a worthy goal---is about more than just eliminating streets, as you can't just force desires. Street closures, in general, make the city LESS urban. Giant blocks are what characterizes suburbs. Cities should have many small blocks that make it easy to walk. Forcing people into dead ends or circling back to where they just came from is silly, un-urban, and as smart as RTA destroying density to build giant concrete bus plazas in the name of supporting transit (like at 22 and Prospect).
  3. Legendary singer José Feliciano to headline this weekend’s Convención Hispana 2019. "The event, put on every three years by the Hispanic Roundtable, focuses on education, empowerment, health, and workforce and economic development. The convention includes a job fair, health screenings, educational workshops, community resource tables, food, and activities for kids. Feliciano, the Grammy-winning singer, is the keynote speaker and will be interviewed by Feliciano, the chairman of the Hispanic Roundtable. The singer will also perform some of his famous songs." https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/10/legendary-singer-jose-feliciano-to-headline-this-weekends-convencion-hispana-2019.html
  4. Icelandair just dropped SFO and Kansas City. There was talk earlier that they wanted to swap KC (on a 757) and CLE (on a Max8). Might this be the beginning of the swap assuming more delays in the Max8? Or does it just reflect other issues going on at Icelandair? Not sure.
  5. Halloween on the USS Cod---one weekend only! "Cleveland’s only submarine is open for Halloween. The USS Cod, docked on Cleveland’s North Coast Harbor, 1201 N. Marginal Road, will open Friday, Oct. 18 from 7 to 11 p.m and Saturday, Oct. 19 from 6 to 11 p.m. to share true stories of the Cod’s adventures. The stories are told below desks while the topside gun crew searches Cleveland harbor for the “Lake Erie Monster.”...." https://www.cleveland19.com/2019/10/03/halloween-tours-oct-clevelands-submarine-uss-cod/
  6. WTF?? What is it with people closing city streets? Every few days now there is another attempt somewhere. In the last few days--close W38 so resident and people can't get to Lorain, close University ave in Tremont completely, and now this--and in the center of Downtown no less?!? It is because the city is doomed to failure so it doesn't need streets and will never grow to need them again?
  7. ^Thanks for pursuing this. Democracy dies in Darkness as WaPo says. Weren't the renderings presented to the city for approval? In such case, aren't they already in the public domain?
  8. Northshore---thanks for the great graphic. So its not as bad as I was expecting, but it is still a street closure. The cul-de-sac at W6 is absolutely atrocious. Regarding your comment, "but I would prefer a beautified multi-use pathway with improved views of downtown than a one way road fronted by a guardrail with overgrown foliage." We could have both a road a beautiful multi-use pathway. The path could be built north of the University. If more land is needed, then just extend the "landbridge" at W5 westbound, though it would not need to be so wide (north-south)--just deep enough for the path. This way, the road stays open, residents are not screwed, and the path is built with a new, beautiful view.
  9. ^I hope you're right that's it temporary for construction. Otherwise, we'd have to close the path at some point to do more construction to replace the street so the residents of the City and of Tremont aren't screwed by this. We'll end up spending more money to fix this and money tied up in the courts as people fight this. The PD is not always right, but I hope they are in this case---in this article I found, it says: "The final piece of the trail will go west along University Road in Tremont and under the George V. Voinovich Bridge and winding its way through the Flats." So hopefully that means--as it says, "along"--and not "in lieu of". https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2019/04/final-stage-of-towpath-trail-construction-to-start-in-june.html
  10. That's REALLY a bad move. Do the residents of W 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 Pl, 11, and 13 Sts know that the city is removing their 50% of their ability to arrive at or leave their streets? A single route of access is like getting to a cul-de-sac in the suburbs? How much do we have to destroy this city? For those above who thumbsuped/loved this comment, why?
  11. wait, what? More street closures? So now W 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 Pl, 11, and 13 will all just dead end? Please tell me this is just a temporary closure.
  12. Not really a question, but an interesting point. Regard the hot weather today, "At the same time it was 93 degrees at Hopkins, it was 81 degrees downtown at Burke Lakefront Airport." I know its generally cooler by the lake than inland--but 12 degrees is a lot. https://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/2019/10/topping-90-tuesday-is-the-hottest-october-day-on-record-in-cleveland.html
  13. ^I bought a coat there. Its a nice coat. Would it have cost less in Lakewood? I didn't think about that option at the time, but if I did and it was the same price, I would certainly buy it Downtown than Lakewood to support the downtown store.
  14. ^I hope the city is earnest with undertaking the master plan and really want to make improvements and really does invest in those improvements. Regarding this statement, "If all they expected to do was a buff up of existing facilities, they (City Council approved the RFQ) wouldn't have allowed the bidders 10-11 months to prepare their submissions." Sure they would--esp. if necessary to "prove" their commitment to the process. Happens all the time. However, the city didn't give vendors 10-11 months to prepare a bid that takes a month to prepare. RFQ was released on Jan 18, 2019 and they were due on March 1, 2019. Were there no qualified bidders? Its been 7 months. Sounds like a severe lack of urgency or care. Either that or incompetence to properly assess the bids and/or negotiate a contract. I don't think the airport director gives a #$#&* anymore and doesn't care about legacy. We see that in airport improvements and we see that in cities served by the airlines. And inaction Jackson himself doesn't give a crap enough to replace him.
  15. "The city will take a year (or maybe two) to solicit a master contractor to build the recommendation" No. The city HAS to do a plan. So it doesn't mean it wants to or is doing so in earnest because it wants to make things better. Its required to do a plan. And it is not required to implement any of it. Look at the giant new terminal and hotel built after the last master plan. I know there were changes like the economy and UA dehubbing, but there's no indication the airport was really going to do anything anyway. Even things they didn't even need a master plan to show---like cramped terminal conditions, poor FIS location, etc.--they didn't bother improving.
  16. Yeah. I wish they had more routes in CLE than just BOS and FLL.
  17. Who would rebuild the I-X Center, the city of Cleveland? If so, why would they build it in such a hostile to Cleveland place that is Brook Park? Or are you talking by some other group just building a place like the I-X Center so the region would not be impacted if the city tears down the IX center?
  18. JetBlue increasing CLE-BOS service to 5x daily starting in May.
  19. Another big retailer in trouble. They have four stores in Cleveland. Forever 21 will file for bankruptcy. The retailer helped popularize fast fashion in America, but opened too many stores as shopping habits changed. Sunday, September 29, 2019 9:17 PM EST The family-held company fell victim to the eroding power of shopping malls and said it would cease operations in 40 countries and close up to 178 stores in the United States. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/29/business/forever-21-bankruptcy.html
  20. ^I don't have an issue with the alignment of the runways or the location of the rental car facility. Before the consolidation, we had lots of little buses running around--avis, budget, hertz, etc.... I'm okay with the consolidation and would rather the space be used for either offices, hotels, more terminal, or more airfield, rather than surface parking for rental cars. We need modern terminals, better immigration processing (and process--no post CBP TSA), and BETTER AIR SERVICE. CLE-SFO is horribly under capacity, e.g., as are other key business cities, some of which have no service at all, and as we all know, CLE-Europe to a useful hub is non-existent.
  21. ^There's an easy solution: stop building giant retail spaces. have a bunch of small ones. Its a lot harder to find a tenant who needs 100,000 sq feet. --and that's less vibrant than 20 little shops/restaurants that are easier to rent and provides more interesting street lift to an area.
  22. ^JAT also flew this in the mid-80s at 1x weekly: JU566 Belgrade – Ljubljana – Cleveland – Chicago JU569 Chicago – Cleveland – Ljubljana – Belgrade Its not different cities per direction, but it shows a stop en route. Not sure of what the rules were back then (I think they were the same as they are now), but if this were operated today, all Chicago-bound passengers would have to deplane in Cleveland and clear immigration/customs, before re-boarding and continuing on to Chicago. (They could not carry new passengers picked up in CLE and brought to Chicago.)
  23. ^why would you want to close Frankfort? There should NOT be more street closures anywhere---this is getting completely crazy. Cleveland already has crazy long blocks--removing more streets makes things even worse.
  24. ^why, what happened? did they formally announce they're withdrawing?

Mayor Frank Jackson's great-grandson faces new charge for participating in a criminal gang "Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson's 16-year-old great-grandson has been charged for participating in gang activity over the past year.
