Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
^I know how airlines and routings work. My point was that if other cities that are smaller than Cleveland can get service, then the largest US metro (4M) without service should be able to figure it out as well. That falls on the Airport Director who can't figure it out or doesn't care to. It may that he doesn't care. Remember, Kennedy tried to quit, but Jackson wouldn't let him--it would have looked bad for the election. So perhaps he's just sitting around collecting a paycheck. https://www.cleveland.com/naymik/2017/10/cleveland_hopkins_airport_chie.html

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Can we please transfer ownership and management to the Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority?? I don't disagree with you that the current airport administration is less than competent--no service to Europe while smaller and Cle-competitor cities are getting it, ridiculous handling of ground transportation (making old people with luggage walk 1/2 mile to a taxi in the garage while taking away parking spaces), insane handling of passengers that need to go through CPB (having to then wait 1-2 hrs in line at no-pre-check available TSA screening) when there are other options (build a secure corridor or put passengers on buses after clearing customs which was the case a few years ago). The solution? Get a better airport director. And if the mayor appoints only duds, get a new mayor. But don't give away the airport to another entity. The city has so few major assets left. The suburbs try to steamroll the city all the time and happily steal jobs from it. The airport (and water) are the last big items the city has in showing its weight. The suburbs were dying to control the Port as well. So, the port may be doing some good things, but that's no reason further hurt the city. Remember the Board of the port has 9 members---6 of which are appointed by the Mayor and 3 by the county (which we can say are the suburbs here as they seem to have control of the county). The port only exists cause Cleveland exists. But the suburbs wanted more. So they said THEY should have 6 members on the board and the city should only have 3. That was a few years ago and luckily that never came to be. The greedy suburban nonsense was put to bed. So, yes, we need much better leadership at the airport, but never at the price of giving the airport away.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^At last--a positive population change for Cleveland! Thanks jonoh81 for compiling. Could you do the same cities above, but using their counties instead of municipal boundaries? Also, 125k Columbus is big. How many of those are students at OSU?

Cleveland: Population Trends
"SEPT. 26, 2019 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released its most detailed look at America’s people, places and economy. New state and local statistics on income, poverty and health insurance are available in briefs, detailed tables, data profiles and more. The American Community Survey (ACS) also produces statistics for more than 40 other topics." I haven't had time to explore the data yet, except for one set. But it is all here: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/guidance/subjects.html The one set I did look at was on citizenship to see the number of non citizens and naturalized foreign born to get a sense of ethnic diversity of Cleveland. Our numbers are really low, unfortunately--only 5.7% of the city at 22,000 people. I then also added PR (US citizens) which contribute to the diversity and helped our numbers a bit.

^Does it happen in cities like NY and Chicago and Miami, too, that have stronger/healthier economies (though Pittsburgh is probably pretty healthy)?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
For every project in CLE, we hear about--usually--how it takes years--whether Nucleus---or the timber bldgs at 25 and Lorain---or Huntington Bldg---or others-- as developers go back and forth with the city, county, state, and other public entities to get tax abatements and/or other financial deals. My question is---is this unique to Cleveland? Does this happen in NY, Chicago, Philly and other major cities? And if it is unique to CLE, why is this the case? Is it because construction costs are out of alignment with rents or that developers know the city wants new buildings so can leverage this desire?

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Someone just sent me this photo, guessing it was 1935. Great shot. Check out Muny stadium, the Warehouse District, future Burke Airport, the road from W9 and Huron down to the Flats is there, as is the Eagle Ramp, Lakeside east of E9 is empty---the Cleveland Press would later be built there (North Point is there now), the docks at the port are less defined than they are today, Scranton Peninsula looks pretty busy, lots of other little details.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I don't think is just the number or size of buildings, its the farm town/college town/small town culture of Columbus that make it feel as a smaller place than Cleveland or Cincinnati. Two posts above someone said Columbus 2020 is now "One Columbus". That's just an outright copy of Cuyahoga County from 10 years ago which has since abandoned such branding, which was "One Cuyahoga", which didn't make sense anyway---it sounds like a unity platform or something, not about growth.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Lumen
If there were for-sale units, I would be interested. But I'm not interested in paying money in rent anymore as I had done that for years.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Lumen
Cool time lapse. on average, how many weeks does it take to build one floor, with a concrete pour and all before building the next one? I remember seeing a show once where they were building one floor per week for some skyscraper, but I think it was show-worthy as that was more accelerated than normal.

Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
^We just signed off on low-rise development---townhouses on Superior around this photo--at E15--with no retail component. We should leverage the asset of main roads rather than treat them like small numbered streets in the neighborhoods; in other words don't allow such development on main thoroughfares. the city even did this on Euclid in Hough of all places. So don't blame the roads for being too big---its the lack of uses along them that limit their use and city hall allows such uses.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
The benefit of living in the city vs the suburbs is the convenience and ability to walk to things. So on the retail front, there MUST be a few bars, some restaurants---both nice ones and things like Chipotle or quick inexpensive places, dry cleaner, a CVS or Walgreens--at the very least. You need these to have a neighborhood. And of course, though these benefit the residents, they will also be supported by people visiting the area.

I can't read the tiny writing either (even after zooming in). Anyone know if the apartments are rentals or for-sale units (or both)?

So the Plain Dealer is rightfully criticizing cleveland.com and the video they supposedly made---but the story is on cleveland.com? It they are really separate entities, shouldn't they each have their own web site?

^How refreshing it could have been if a forever-solon company, when having made the decision to build a new HQ, would do so Downtown or in Midtown.

Did we ever learn why Sweet Melissa's closed in Rocky River? Was it really the slow service? Anyway, a new restaurant is opening in their old space this fall, Char Whiskey Bar + Grille. "Char will specialize in locally sourced meats and fresh burgers, mac and cheese and more. The bar will serve up over 100 types of whiskey." https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/09/char-whiskey-bar-grille-coming-to-rocky-river.html

Coworking Spaces in CLE?
I don't think there are any Wework locations in CLE. The company just postponed its IPO... "WITH ITS stylish shared workspaces and chic occupants, lubricated by fruit-infused water and nitro coffee on tap, WeWork, a firm that rents out temporary offices, had seemed to be riding the wave of a new trend in managing desk-jockey life. But the nine-year-old private company has suffered a setback, announcing on September 16th that it would postpone an initial public offering (IPO) that had been expected to raise $3bn-4bn. Investors, it seems, cannot decide what the firm is worth. They have four main worries. The first, and most glaring, is WeWork’s lack of profits. The firm argues that this is explained by the huge investments needed to secure economies of scale. It says that mature locations are profitable—revenues doubled during the first half of 2019 over the same period in 2018, to $1.5bn. But its net losses also rose, if more modestly, to $905m. A second concern is how the company would fare in a recession. It has taken on $47bn in lease payments but has only $4bn in committed future revenues from customers. A third bugbear is corporate governance. WeWork will issue multiple classes of shares that give its flamboyant founder, Adam Neumann, control with a minority stake....." https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2019/09/17/why-wework-doesnt-work-yet
