  1. Will there be any Superior-fronting retail in this project?
  2. Just tell us this please: how many stories?

You can do anything with numbers. It would be easy to say something like Burke provides a $12.5B economic benefit to Cleveland, while another can say it is only $6.2B. But whatever the number, it is most certainly a positive number.
  4. People from Columbus who are relevant to development and investment.

My post? Do you mean this one? If so, i was using YOUR dates, so I was comparing 2000 to 2018.

What did your neighbor tell you? I'd be interested to hear. "spend the money to modernize Burke in an effort to increase revenues" -- YES! I like this thinking, though its more important to increase passenger levels than revenues. That should be the objective.

Cleveland Trust--where do you get your numbers? The last time I asked, you cited a non-aviation reporter at Scene whose article was full of errors. And now you say "Burke lost close to 50% of its traffic between 2017-2018."? That's absurd. So you don't poison otherwise innocent minds, here are real numbers: 2017 26,773 Itinerant (BKL is either origin or destination) + 11,798 local (flights that take off and land at BKL) 2018 25,209 itinerant + 9,288 local hardly a 50% decrease in traffic---and these are aircraft numbers--not passenger numbers.

Taxpayers or the city general fund are NOT subsidizing Burke. Its part of the airport system of the city. Hopkins and Burke are part of an enterprise fund of the city----they are not funded by the general budget. Its in the interest of operations at Hopkins that Burke stays open. If you're on a commercial flight at Hopkins, do you really want to be 10th in line for take off because you have little Cessnas in front of you as part of a flight school?

I agree. We must leverage this fact that we have this airport---as it really sets us apart from other cities---and use it to help us grow. Regarding the high school, Aviation H.S. is back in business! It is not currently in the original building at the moment. It is across the Shoreway right now at 14th & Lakeside. Its a CMSD school. Also, it expanded its curriculum--and it now teaches maritime subjects in addition to aviation. Here's the new website: http://davisam.org/

I think adding an updated passenger terminal at BKL would be a nice way to improve the airport.

Dude--where do you get your numbers? You counting flights that fly over the airports that are handled for one reason or another by the local tower? Air Carrier + Air taxi + General Aviation + Military--for flights from place to place (not arriving and landing at same airport---so excluding, e.g., flight school operations): 2000 CLE - 324,111 BKL - 20,564 (11,371 in 2018) CGF - 22,579 (8,532 in 2018) Total - 367,254 Hopkins is lower now, yes. But the average aircraft is larger. CO loved the ERJ's at their CLE hub....those are mostly phased out by US carriers.

The designated relief airports for Hopkins are Burke, Cuyahoga County, Medina, Lost Nation, and Lorain County. The most capable in terms of runway capacity and trained emergency services of all of those is BKL.
  13. Pugu replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Aviation
^"It was NEVER a reliever airport." Burke was not created to be a reliever---but was developed to be an airport in its own right. But, in terms of an integrated national air system, BKL is an FAA-designated reliever for Hopkins.
  14. Pugu replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Aviation
Not only CLE, but, actually, ALL airports need relief. "growing majority would like to take it back. " You mean restoring the Municipal Dump? That's what was there before. If you want to make BKL better utilized, advocate for closure of a weaker asset---the county airport. But don't try to hurt or reduce the city by eliminating something that gives it an economic advantage over competitors.
  15. Pugu replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Aviation
Ummm....if you're saying that aircraft crashes are not relevant to temporary closure of an airport, I think you've demonstrated your understanding of aviation issues, which explains your arguments for closing Burke.
  16. Pugu replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Aviation
^Really? Okay. Here are about 1,000-2,000 examples---and this doesn't even include things in Cleveland like the plane that recently skidded off the runway on ice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_accidents_and_incidents_involving_commercial_aircraft
  17. Pugu replied to StuFoote's post in a topic in Aviation
ummmmm....just because it is under capacity, that does not not mean an incident could not occur there....airports or runways are closed ALL THE TIME due to MANY external factors, hence the need for relievers.

^I don't get people's obsession with closing Burke. BKL is reliever to Hopkins and is important to the Cleveland economy. True, the Fed doesn't run checks through there every night. Check clearing is now done electronically. But a new big user is the Cleveland Clinic. They have 2 or 3 jets--painted in their colors--based at BKL and use it fly people into CLE when seconds count. Also, the county airport is a tiny little airport---so comments about "3 airports in the county...." are pointless unless you're talking about closing the County Airport. BKL can handle 737s, A321, B757s, etc. The county airport couldn't handle any of those. And while Hopkins could---see sentence #2 above---BKL is a reliever for Hopkins.
  19. ^I hope you're right! But the bus has to be frequent enough. The last time I tried to take the bus, it was crazy. I took the Red Line from the Terminal Tower to West Blvd then tried to connect to a Detroit Ave bus into Lakewood. I waited and waited and then WALKED to Lakewood. I finally saw the first bus when I was already a few blocks in. And this was a weekday, 6pm. Never again. I guess one hope for the rail system is, now, I could have taken the train to West Blvd, then jumped into a Lyft or Uber---those companies weren't around then, or if they were, were not widely used. PS--that's great, though, that you take the bus even when you (likely) have options. Hope there are more out there like you than me!
  20. I like the balloons. Certainly good for the air traffic at BKL. Re the Waterfront Line, yes, service may increase if this all this happens, but still where will people go? Other than Hopkins Airport, Little Italy, W. 25 St, the Terminal Tower (which can be walked to from here) and Shaker Sq, the rail system and the development around them as destinations is limited. If they can afford the rents/mortgage at the Lakefront, they're not jumping on a bus. We need more investments in rail.
  21. If you think cities are not in competition with each other, what was all that Amazon HQ2 business about? In any event, I wasn't trying to "stir the pot", but merely reporting--like so many others here do--on something overheard. And looking at the data, it doesn't sound unreasonable.
  22. Has Columbus peaked? I heard some people talking that Columbus' growth is slowing: two consecutive years of decreasing GDP growth, despite a healthy national economy and in context of its prior fast economic growth.
  23. Wow. That's quite an image.
  24. A ferry all the way to Toronto is an interesting idea, but it would take a long time to get there--probably 8 hours at least. The concept behind just crossing the lake to Port Stnaley was supposed to save drive time from CLE to Toronto and carbon emissions from all those trucks.
  25. Agree that a ferry to the Lake Erie Islands would work. Re Canada, I'm a long supporter of the idea. It has a long history----Port Stanley local folks didn't want all those trucks on their streets, and then Canada federalized the port so it was no longer a local issue but a Canadian one. Then a second port was mentioned (Port Burwell maybe?). There were some customs processing issues then raised, but now, with the latest customs agreements between the US and Canada (unless Trump killed them) those issues are no longer relevant, meaning a ferry could work if the Canadians can just pick a port and stick with it. There was even an operator selected for the service a while ago, a Dutch company, Royal Wagenborg .
