  1. ^ No, MUCH worse than that. He KILLED the Cleveland subway project. I think the city actually had Federal funds allocated to it---and he sent them back.

^Ultimately, what's the point of comparing county populations? Markets aren't based on invisible lines marking political entities. Re Amazon, I know I'm probably in the increasing minority, but I'm not a fan of Amazon and really prefer to buy things after I can see and touch them. I'd shop at an Ikea any day over Amazon. And if I do have to buy online instead of locally, I use jet.com or product-specific sites like bn.com, based on what i'm buying.

^the opening video changes images way to fast. and for a few it dwells too long on something less interesting. surprisingly poorly done.

^Its because Columbus is a much smaller market than Cleveland. Columbus is around 2M, but Cleveland is around 4.5M. (The Cleveland store would draw from Cleveland (3M) plus Canton and Youngstown areas.) Even if Columbus is growing, it will be a long time before it surpasses Cleveland.
  5. ^Usually condos are built a little better than rental units--condos have better sound proofing, thicker walls, etc. So I hope the developer builds with this vision in mind---condos after 5 years.....

I really don't think it's how Ikea would perform in Cleveland, rather how would a Cleveland store effect Columbus and Pittsburgh. With a Columbus store on the North end of that metro, and Pittsburgh store on the north end of that metro, that would put three stores in potentially too close proximity for their liking. And who knows what those stores balance sheets look like. Maybe they're not strong enough to take the blow of Clevelander's gaining their own location. I agree with MissinOhio. Something is very strange when it comes to Cleveland and Ikea. Sure, CLE would impact columbus, Pit, and Detroit sales, but the loss at those three stores would be made up significantly by the huge volume coming from the 3MM local shoppers in the 7-counties surrounding Cleveland. And besides the Columbus (especially) and PIT (i think) are fairly new, so CLE could have been built before those two cities. It is something. Population is stagnant, but still very large (3MM) and bigger than Pit or Columbus. and even though stagnant, spending power has steadily increased over 30 years. So what is it? Cleveland's big bad reputation? That Columbus got a store and Cleveland didn't is a real FU to Cleveland by Ikea. Is that fueling a lack of cooperation or just general disgust from Cleveland towards Ikea? Do some decision makers at Ikea have some personal issues/problems with the city that is affecting their business judgement?

would be good to see a section on transportation on the page--like tower city, E22/Prospect, Health Line, Burke Airport, the Port, Amtrak Station, etc.
  8. What an incredible city this could have been today, if not for Norm Krumholz. That he is honoroed with a street name shows the city still doesn't get it.
  9. ^hmmm... I myself hadn't been there in 25 or so years---but I had been there a few times and it each time it was excellent. Of course, a lot can happen within 25 years, as well as lots of new competition. Website is still up--and mentions lunch: "Massimo’s is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11:00 AM-2:00 PM. The lunch buffet is $6.95 for dine-in and $3.00 to take out." $3 for lunch for a fancy place?!? That is strange, not to mention having take out at all for a place like that! Sorry to see them go.
  10. ^Didn't know it was just an event space that the regular restaurant closed. When did that happen?
  11. Massimo da Milano, on W. 25 St, is closing. I haven't been there in years, but it was a great restaurant. Its been there for at least 30 years. Truly a pioneer for that part of Ohio City. However, the PD just glosses over it--and this is where I learned of it closing. It should at least say why.... ".....will occupy the first floor of the historic Forest City Savings and Trust Building, built in 1890s and currently occupied by Massimo da Milano, which will close later this month." Would it really kill the PD to hire one or two more editors? The industry's been so hurt, they could probably get someone for cheap.... Anyone know why its closing? http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/12/want_to_run_a_restaurant_cleve.html
  12. ^I'd agree with that. And because they are part of NY State and PA, they are in smarter, more progressive, and forward thinking states that isn't trying to kill the cities. For example, those states understand the value of public transit. In Ohio, they would shut down all the transit systems and redirect that money to the roads if they could.
  13. Re a Dunkin Donuts on Rockwell......man, we must be really desperate for things to densifying Euclid Ave to include it in this thread!
  14. ^Also, to add: Campus Int'l is the only IB school in Cleveland (metro Cleveland, that is).
  15. Yabo713--you counted those cars over how many minutes of time? or were they all parked? Would be interested to see also how many OH cars there were to get a sense of the magnitude of the out of state plates--or even better--OH cars by county (e.g., 18=Cuyahoga, 47=Lorain, etc.) to see the cities pull from other places.....

^Even that layout is far better than what we ended up with. Looking at that photo, in the original plan, the tower was on the corner of 9th and Lakeside--great street presence and energy. What we got today is a much short building set WAY BACK from the corner and a stupid green lawn or whatever on the corner of 9th and Lakeside.
  17. ^"Within the last five years....a 200 percent increase of children 5 to 9 years old shifted the paradigm." that's great news. Of course, those are only population estimates. I wonder where these kids are going to school.
  18. ^any thoughts on this?

I wish we still had the Cleveland Press.
  20. ^Cleveland ranks #2--that's great. I get the medical and aviation stuff, but do we manufacture cell phones and computer chips in CLE? or do final assembly of them? Those two were particularly interesting.
  21. Just went to the cited link to see what this development was about. The beach and the pool like nice. Japanese developer?
  22. ^are these units for-sale or rental units?
  23. ^"Cleveland Euclid Hotel Associates, LLC: $2 million toward restoration of the Cleveland Athletic Club complex. The 15 story, 253,000-square-foot building has been vacant since 2008 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The redevelopment ultimately will provide 161 units of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments......" FINALLY some residential units that are larger than 2brs. You can't keep families Downtown without them--and they're likely to skip the inner neighborhoods for the burbs if they're not provided.
