Cleveland: Random Development and News
With $10M extra of capital backing, the Port of Cleveland can make more project funding available to developers or cities. Deal gives ports more breadth to issue bonds "A new contract between Jobs-Ohio and six port authorities promises to boost funding for real estate and business projects across the state. The private, nonprofit economic-development corporation is putting $50 million into reserves for five regional bond funds, including programs sponsored by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority and the Development Finance Authority of Summit County. That deal, the result of 18 months of discussions, will give the ports the collective wiggle room to issue hundreds of millions of dollars in additional bonds...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/deal-gives-ports-more-breadth-issue-bonds

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Ohio had more deaths than births in 2020, a grim first in state history amid COVID-19 "From the Columbus Dispatch: About 143,661 Ohioans died last year while 129,313 were born, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health. So far in 2021, Ohio has logged 107,462 deaths and 100,781 births. In the 112 years since statewide record keeping began in 1909, deaths never previously surpassed births despite countless wars, economic downturns and disease." --newsfeed from Crain's Cleveland. Cleveland: Shaker Square: Development and News
"The city correctly understood that Shaker Square is the anchor for the southeast side of Cleveland..." -- Cleveland Neighborhood Progress CEO Tania Menesse. Talk about taking condescendingly about someone giving you $10M. This article has good details on the process. CNP will seek additional funds beyond the $10M and then sell it to a new owner once brought up to snuff. https://wcpn.ideastream.org/news/cleveland-proposes-paying-off-shaker-square-debts-transferring-ownership

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
There is no requirement to show the feds how $ will be spent. In any event, the first $121M to be spent, council approval pending under city law (not federal) is nothing transformative at all. "The City of Cleveland today announced fund distribution details for its portion of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) stimulus. In total, the City of Cleveland was allocated more than $511 million of ARPA funds – the eight largest award in the nation. Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s plan for spending $121 million of the city’s stimulus is currently being reviewed by Cleveland City Council under legislation (Ord. Number 843-2021). View the attachments announcing the specific projects and program descriptions in the legislation: • Legislation https://clecityhall.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/ord.-843-2021-arpa-legislation.pdf • Building & Housing https://clecityhall.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/bldg-housing-arpa-program-summary-2021.pdf • Community Development and Economic Development https://clecityhall.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/cd-ed-arpa-project-program-summary-2021-002.pdf ...To date, the city has received half of the total allocation. The second disbursement will come in mid-2022 and all the funds must be allocated by Dec. 31, 2024 and spent by Dec. 31, 2026." (City of Cleveland) The links above detail how the money will be spent. For example Woodhill Choice Neighborhood- Affordable Housing $3,000,000 Storefront Grants $250,000 Shaker Square $10,000,000 Lead Safe Housing Fund Grants $5,000,000 Warner and Swasey Affordable Housing Redevelopment $2,000,000, etc.... No big, transformative project.

Governor Mike DeWine
Really spooky---is this for Halloween? Look at the photo at the link--at the left, it looks like Death himself, sans scythe, is presenting the new license plate design, with DeWine holding an actual size sample.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I haven't seen any updates either, except for this article from Oct 2020: "In October 2019, Elite announced that Cleveland would be the the home of its Americas headquarters. But due to travel restrictions as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the group has postponed the opening of the Cleveland office and the Elite Global Conference until 2021." https://www.bizjournals.com/cleveland/news/2020/10/01/cleveland-firms-join-london-business-program.html

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Yeah, that's pretty standard. But I meant more than 3 doctors in Cleveland getting rich (who spend money around town and add to the economy), i was referring to a full company being based here so there is a lot of jobs and an actual payroll. That was my frustration.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
The only person Bibb said he would fire---and this only what he said, doesn't mean he'll do it--is the chief of police. Its certainly expected he picks a new cabinet. but beyond that effecting change won't be accomplished by firing everyone---which he can't do anyway as probably 98% of city staff are civil service. It will be by really having the guts to clean house where he can and hiring the right leaders. Unfortunately for these last two points, he has no experience or credibility.
-
Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
Huh? Isn't he a full-time councilman (and council president)? Is this allowed? Aren't there lots of potential conflicts of interest working for a law firm in the city while also being in Council?

Medtech company with ties to CWRU, UH completes $70 million IPO "Lucid Diagnostics Inc. (Nasdaq: LUCD), an esophageal cancer test-maker that uses technology developed jointly by medical school faculty at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals, has completed a $70 million initial public offering.....The underlying technology for EsoCheck and EsoGuard was co-invented by Sanford Markowitz, the Ingalls Professor of Cancer Genetics and Medicine at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and an oncologist at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center; Amitabh Chak, a professor of medicine at the med school, gastroenterologist at the University Hospitals Digestive Health Institute and the Brenda and Marshall B. Brown Master Clinician in Innovation and Discovery at UH Seidman; and Joseph Willis, a professor of pathology at the medical school and pathology vice chair for translational research at UH...." https://www.crainscleveland.com/health-care/medtech-company-ties-cwru-uh-completes-70-million-ipo? Idea and technology created by Cleveland people and Cleveland institutions, and fostered by Cleveland organizations. Why is this a New York company?!?!? It should be a Cleveland company. How do we keep such businesses in Cleveland? All that payroll and profit and prestige and supporting business gone to NY instead of here. I don't know if they started in CLE and moved to NY or just set up in NY over CLE from the outset but either way its not good for CLE.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
how does "folding things into the county" help? why not address the problems of the city and find better solutions. These are processes. Giving up your own store and just adopting the processes of another organization--who has absolutely no experience in the city in older properties in older neighborhoods with different, denser conditions--better? Constant talk of giving things to the county is utter nonsense.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
I hate to accept it, but you're probably right unless he can pull some kind of October surprise. After 16 years in Council, it must be pretty devastating though to be taken out by a guy like Bibb.

Cleveland: Population Trends
^maybe. I dunno. I'm not suggesting "Parma" be added---i was only responded to the person who was basing things on population size. I think it's silly to have "Elyria" in the name of Cleveland's MSA. I think the full seven counties should just be "Cleveland MSA".
-
Cleveland: Population Trends
CLEVELAND is the market. Not Elyria or Mentor. I could see the argument for "Akron", so Cleveland-Akron, but its still "cleveland" so Cleveland MSA is what it should be. "Akron" included would just be to appease Akron. Regarding your name above and the reasons, it therefore should be Cleveland-Akron-Parma---as Parma is bigger than Elyria by 20 or 30k.
-
Cleveland: Population Trends
^You referring to MLS's? If so, they're different. Cleveland's MLS has a silly name. Its not Cleveland MLS--compared to Central Ohio MLS, Cincy MLS, or Dayton MLS--for Columbus, Cincy, and Dayton--its "NOW MLS". Good way to brand Cleveland. "NOW" is: Ashland, Ashtabula, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Huron, Jefferson, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Portage, Sandusky, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, Washington and Wayne Counties.
-
Cleveland: Population Trends
^Now all we need to do is drop "Elyria" and pick up Summit and Portage counties to have the real "Cleveland MSA."

Cleveland: Random Development and News
This should be in the Cleveland Business Thread, but it's locked. Regarding CLE's dismal share of VC money compared to Columbus, I wanted to say that hopefully this will help things: "NEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Ernst & Young LLP (EY US) today announced that the EY-Nottingham Spirk Innovation Hub in Cleveland, Ohio, has opened its new facility. The Hub, which has been supporting clients virtually throughout the pandemic, combines Nottingham Spirk's design, engineering and product development offerings with the global EY organization's strategy and commercialization capabilities and wavespace network." https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ey-nottingham-spirk-innovation-hub-opens-in-cleveland-ohio-301402680.html https://www.ey.com/en_gl/ey-nottingham-spirk-innovation-hub

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2021
I used to like Sandra Williams and I supported her in the primary. She just lost all my respect. I get it if she doesn't like Kelley, but that doesn't mean she has to actively endorse the non-Kelley candidate.
-
Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
or maybe--since Yabo said "since college"--the cousin has no basis for comparison and doesn't know how things are at other companies. Overall, if their reputation within CLE is crap (mostly), Lincoln should 1) fix their management and 2) actively recruit outside of CLE--which will also have the benefit of bringing new people to Cleveland.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
Interesting, thanks. I didn't know that. My memory only goes back as far as the Shangri-La and there was a great Chinese restaurant "House of Hunan" or maybe "Hunan House" on the ground floor.
-
Cleveland: Hotel Development
That's the old Shangri-La Inn. Great to see it come back to life by Marriott! Was it a Sheraton before it was Shangri-La? The Sheraton I knew was previously the Bond Court and is now the Westin at E. 6 and St. Clair.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
2/3 of all VC money goes to Columbus? While Cleveland is the largest market? Very sad. Hopefully this will wake up the city of cleveland, economic development organizations in Cleveland, and tech start ups here that we are quickly falling behind. It is utterly absurd that Columbus would get 66% of all VC money. If anything, CLE should be the 66% with the remainder to be split with Cincy and Columbus.
