That theme is a no frills basic theme.  I might be able to add the search function but in the mean time just use https://forum.urbanohio.com/search  This will work regardless of the theme.

How about an option to upload photos for posting so we don't have to host them ourselves?

How about a "Social" section. A specific area for posting gatherings (not just the big forum meets, but smaller, informal ones too), social events, urban issue related meetings/seminars, local night scenes, live bands, festivals, art showings, etc.

I could see people posting local happenings in their city, like an art exhibit opening or a developer meeting about a new condo tower being built. Be a fun way to find people to do stuff with in your city. I'm sure we all have friends like mine that melt when they're more than 5 miles from Easton, so it would be nice to be able to find some folks who like to leave the suburbs once in awhile.

I know we all can't make it to forumer meets either, so we could use the "Social" section as a way to find one-on-one or two or three meetings for urban neighborhood tours and the like.

one word...DIAGRAMS!!

Someone on this forum has to go to Wooster in Wayne County. With a population of 25' date='000, this city is known for being home to the first Christmas tree in the U.S., great ethnicity, a well respected college, and is the smallest city in the world with its own department store, -Freedlander's. Also, there are many 6-8 story buildings downtown, really a must see 'hub' in the heart of amish country.[/quote']

I'll do wooster this weekend if i have time.

If you're still lingering "guest" give me a few suggestions for areas to scope out aside from the obvious downtown walkabout

Diagrams we could put in the Site Info sections or even, more appropriately, if the diagrams are more specific, we could put them in each individual city.

Ronnie, you are in charge of making Urban Ohio diagrams for EVERY CITY IN OHIO. :)

This isn't exactly an exciting suggestion, but I'd like to see a few maps showing locations of neighborhoods, landmarks, or whatever. I'm often looking at all the great photos on this site but not knowing where things are unless I happen to be personally familiar with them. I want to know where everything is, dag nab it! I guess that's why I study geography, though...

^perhaps some interractive maps on the main page of UO, where clicking on region "x" of the map takes you to the neighborhood page?

Who would draw the maps? It's a good idea, though.

^

Well hell, I can do that...and it's actually a good idea. We use that in the foosball website's to locate playing locations around the country. It's quick, easy and nifty.

I'll make one for ya Rich, and get it back to you to see what you think.

good idea!

Put PigBoy on that chore. OWU should have ArcView. :)

Seriously, if in a pinch, I have B&W maps of the "major" Ohio cities and have scanned most of them (and via Photoshop and PageMill incorporated them into my website). ODOT is not going to chase us down for using them to locate places.

  • 2 weeks later...

^no, there used to be one at SSC (don't know if its still there) that was that was a smiley holding up a sign reading, "job for the pope"

^

I have a few maps selected, Rich. I am debating on how to do it. It could go by...

1. Counties: which would probably mean lots of pages and hyperlinking.

2. Cities: probably wouldn't be too bad at first until you start getting lots of cities on the site.

3. Divide Ohio by sections, ie. NorthWest, NorthEast, Cenral, SouthWest, SouthEast.

I'm kinda partial to the section idea...

What about neighborhoods for the big cities?

As for non-serious reponses, census tracts reminded me that I have a shapefile of all the census blocks in Ohio (65,000 or so). I was going to suggest using that, but I looked at it and it turns out that it's only centroid points, not the actual boundaries. Now that I think about it, that's probably what I used to make population density maps of Ohio, which I believe I posted here at some point.

If we have maps, it should be down by section, of course. And then, it'd be NICE to have neighborhood maps but oh well :(.

i wanna see the striking looking steel plants before they are all torn down (like clevo just did to the isg blast furnace).

hell's belle's it's known as the rust belt for a reason so let's see some real live rust while it still exists!!!!!

so to summarize, steel plants and other industrial relics (ie, the hullets) okey dokey smokey? thx

i do have industrial valley as a cleveland hood (on the main page), they do get kinda ancy when a random guy with a camera tries to take picture of your industrial plant.

What about a list of significant building projects planned or under construction throughout the state?  It seems like the Downtown Cleveland Building Projects website is more or less dead, so we need it. Columbus has Retro-Metro, which is pretty OK.  What about other cities?

That's what Projects & Construction is for ;).

I'm in favor of having a Sticky topic of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Akron, Toledo, etc in the Projects & Construction forum and updating the "list" everyweek with new projects and such.  I think it would be more practical.

That sounds like a good idea. It might reduce thread proliferation and the creation of redundant and duplicated threads.

I'd really like to see neighborhood maps, that are clickable to bring up the pictures of that 'hood.

  • 1 month later...

any word yet about the neighborhood map idea?

Heh.  It didn't end up going anywhere when I brought up the same basic idea five months ago, either.

The person who said they would work on the maps hasnt been heard from in forever(Ronnie) and Chris and myself have been very busy lately.  We'll get to it sooner or later.  If someone else wants to take a stab at it, that would be fine with us.

I would gladly make some maps, but I wouldn't have a clue how to make them operational in any sense.  And of course there's the issue of determining neighborhood boundaries... I've got Dayton's completely figured out and I know there are some good maps out there for a couple other cities, but so far I don't think anyone has found a complete Columbus or Toledo neighborhood map.

So I guess I'm not good for much, but I wish I were.

But Ronnie did resurface a couple weeks ago, so if he hasn't disappeared again you could pester him about it. :whip:

^ Not sure I get what you're saying.  Can't you just click on urbanohio.com there below the "Pages" thing after the last post?

You still gonna do some maps Pigboy?  All you have to do is design them.....I can make them functional.

Wow... forgot about that.  Yeah, I can make maps (not immediately, but in a few weeks), if you know what kind of look would be good.  Although there's still that problem of the lack of information of neighborhoods, unless some people would be able to draw approximate boundaries from knowledge.  Would you just want a simple image that you can then do your hyperlink magic on?  I'm getting good at interactive maps in Flash, but that's probably overkill.

I can really actually do in less than a year this time, I promise! :-D

Maybe we can search online and come up with a decent map that shows neighborhood boudaries and go off that.  I was just planning on using standard mapping with the picture to make it functional, not really into big flash thingamabobbers.  Unless you want to throw one together and wow us with it?

Nah, no need to go nuts with Flash I'd think... just thought I'd toss it out there.

So will just jpegs work, then?  I'll come up with a set of them- maybe one for each section of the state to show the cities and towns, and some for the cities to show the neighborhoods, and maybe some metro ones for those that have "suburbs" sections.

As far as neighborhoods, I know of pretty detailed boundaries for Dayton and Cincinnati, and I seem to recall a site that had some for Toledo.  The other cities may have some more general maps available, although I have never seen any kind of neighborhood map of Columbus.  But presumably those who actually took the photos in those cities would know approximately where to place a label or something.

Anyway, I'll try to make something nice.  Again, though, not right away.  After this semester ends will be good.

jpegs are fine.

After this semester is fine.(I can't wait for it to end myself.  Working full time and going to school full time should be against the law).

http://www.nhlink.net/neighborhoodtour/nt.php has maps with street names, a little hard to read, but you can figure out the boundaries. Oh this is for cleveland

Just wanted to post that I have not forgotten about the maps, but it turns out I have been fairly well-occupied with other things this summer and haven't gotten around to thinking about them.  But I assure you they are still on my mind and maybe I'll get to them eventually!

Oh, and thanks for that link two months ago, pope.

Where are these maps, people! ;)

Also, is it just me or does the current color scheme of UO drive you crazy? I'm not a big fan of this sky-blue.

How about pink to attract more ladies?

  • 3 months later...

A map with pics for all small towns in Ohio on this site. The names for towns with pics would be the ones shown and you could just click on them. There are so many I haven't heard of but look really nice. Something easier than looking for small towns on Google maps and typing them in the Ohio city forum to see if there are any matches. It gets tedious.

Am I the only one who has gone into the "Look and Layout Preferences" and changed the theme to the "Babylon" theme?

I did that the day it was updated, the colors are much easier to read. Plus, I don't like change.

I'm just throwing this out there and have no idea if the parties involved would be interested, but it has just been something that I've been thinking about.  Jeff has obviously invested a lot time and effect into creating his historical Dayton threads, which I am quite grateful for as I have learned a great deal from him and his research.  I was just wondering if his research could actually be hosted on Urban Ohio as a part of the Dayton section.  It is good to have it in the forum to discuss, but after time it gets buried and I would hate to loose that info if the forums were ever pruned or something like that.  It was just an idea I had...and like I said, I have no idea if Jeff, Chris, and Rich would even be interested but I just wanted to throw it out there.

I would like to see thread post numbered.

I think it would make it easier for reference purposes.

thanks,
