I would like the ability to block a user, and not see any post they make. Nextdoor can do this and it has made that app so much more enjoyable.

am i now seeing that you can edit posts for a brief amount of time without them immediately marked as edited? if so its a good idea and most forums do that.

Site improvement suggestion:  On the main page (urbanohio.com), could we show the TEN most recent posts? It used to be that way, but now it only shows five.  I used that page to see the latest 'news' and discussions---and would look at those of the 10 I was interested in. Now, with five its not readily easy to see what's new. Even when I comment on something (Hopkins Airport) I see it disappears from the main page within minutes as other topics take over---so its probably difficult for other people as well to see the latest topics unless they go into the longer page and scroll along every topic heading to see if something new was written within one of the main subject headings.  It was far easier before. Could we make this tiny adjustment? Would be a great improvement.  Thanks for considering it.

I've changed it back to ten for the time being.  The reason for leaving it at five is because it's quite large and stretches the page out more than I like.  When we get a redesigned main web page we'll change the css to make it fit better within the page.

Love the ten--thank you so much.  In this case, functionality is more meaningful that design if the only design impact is that the page is a little longer vertically than otherwise. Please consider keeping ten through the new main page redesign.  Thanks again for this improvement!

You beat me to it.  I was going to ask the same thing.  It was there a few days ago if I remember correctly.

You're all on crack!  It's in City Discussions ?

I really like the "go to first unread post" functionality, but the icon (star/dot) is very small and hard to select, especially on mobile. Could you update the CSS to increase the size of that star/dot so that it's easier to tap/click? For what it's worth, Apple's HIG recommends minimum of 44x44 for tappable icons, while Microsoft suggest 34x34 with 26x26 as the bare minimum. The current size is around 15x15 pixels, so that's way smaller than ideal, especially since they are so close to the Thread Title, which if clicked takes you to the first post. Even bumping it up to 26x26 would help immensely.

I also think the functionality of the star/dot icons is not super obvious, since you have to hover to see the "Go to First Unread" label. On mobile there's no hover state, so there's no way to "discover" this functionality. Possibly substituting the star/dot with a text button or an arrow of some kind would help the user discover that it's a (very useful!) navigation element. That also could help make the touch target larger and easier to hit.

You can change the behavior of clicking on unread topics using the filters at the top of the screen. When this option is set, it will take you the first unread post by default. You won't have to click the dot to left of the thread title. This option is available on mobile too. Change the option and save the filter as your own custom stream.

I'll take a look at it and see what our options are. Thanks for the input.

I've noticed the search bar does not appear when in the "Dark Two" theme. Is this fixable, or just something that I just have to work around with myself when searching?

We need a sad face emoji. We have a laughing one but not a sad one. An emoji to react to a post.

edit: OK, I thought that was a confused emoji. Sorry. Maybe it was another emoji that I can't remember now.

What happened to the Dark theme (not the Dark Dark) theme?  Both the default and Dark Dark themes are downright painful to look at.

Do you have the ability to add the emphasize button similar to an I-phone? To me there is a different between liking what someone says versus strongly agreeing and wanting to emphasize a point.

The Dark theme was no longer updated by whoever created it, therefore became incompatible with current software updates to the forum.  Try the Dark2 theme for now, but I am looking at a new single theme for everyone.  The theme would allow users to switch from light to dark on the fly.

Thanks!  I personally am a fan with themes that are dark, but not all blackout dark.

@X Off topic, but i am a big fan of dark themes - it's just so much easier on my eyes. If you use Chrome, I recently found this extension that has worked wonderfully on roughly 95% of the sites I've visited using its default settings. On the remaining 5% it can be tweaked to your liking. Try it out: https://darkreader.org/

Oh... happy 11,000th post!

Thank you, thank you!  Think of all the time well spent!

When we post a group of photos, the software does not leave any space between them.  Is there any way to have it automatically separate them, or is there something we can do manually to make it happen?

i am not sure, but is there an ohio bridges thread?

i know there are or have been bridge threads in the past for like ohio river bridges or cuyahoga river bridges, but what about just a generic catch all thread for any and all ohio bridges?

if possible, i would like to see a short time lag to edit your posts without the distracting edit notice added -- most forums have that.

i'm all thumbs on my phone and at work much of the time, so i make careless errors.

The only way to make that happen is to allow silent editing of posts.  Presently, the only groups who can do that are: admin, mods, and premium.  Even so, I think most of us leave it when we make edits.

i see there is a time limit to edit posts. is that new? how long is it? seems to be a week or so, is that right? can it be made longer??  maybe like a month or two?

Yes, there is a 5 day limit and it has been that way for probably almost a year.  I have no problem with changing it, but feel 2-3 weeks should be sufficient.

5 days seems appropriate, in my opinion.

Yeah, I'd say 2 weeks max.

Is there a way to post polls?  With the debate going on with the landbridge in downtown Cleveland, it'd be interesting to do a poll and see how the majority feel.

Click "Start New Topic" (near the top right of the page), then the option for "Poll", and create away!

Gotcha!  Now way to embed a poll in a topic though?

Perhaps start a poll thread and then have a mod merge them.  Any thoughts @richNcincy?

I'm not so sure there is an easy way to add a poll to an existing topic.

Is there anyway you could have the last few (2 or 3) posts on each page carry over to the next page, when a topic adds a page?

Another words- when a topic goes to a new page, could you have the previous couple posts from the previous page carry over with it?

I checked the settings and did not see anything that would make this happen.  I know it's available on other forum software and will keep an eye on if the feature makes it to the next iteration of IPS.

  • 1 year later...

I think it would be useful to have a feature allowing non moderators to flag a post as off topic. I think this would help make the Moderators' job easier, while also giving normal commentators a more productive action than meta posting or dragging the thread further off topic. Reporting a post seems too extreme, especially since there isn't an option under report like "this post is off topic for the thread but otherwise fine." Ideally I'd like a flag as off-topic option under the ... button, but I think a specific off topic option under the reporting sub menu would also be fine.

Just my 2¢. I've been seeing more off topic posts recently, and don't feel like there's a productive response for normal commentators.

^Building off this, it would be nice if we could delete our own posts. Again, would probably make sense as an option under the "..." button.
