I would vote NO.

All of the Kentucky stuff outside of new residential subdivisions in Boone County (do we really care about those anyway?) already go in the Random Cincinnati thread or have a thread of their own.  Just like "Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky" are redundant, so is having a Random (Greater) Cincinnati thread and a NKY one.

I was wondering if anyone else thinks that the Queen City West thread (for the Queen City Barrel site) should be moved into the projects and construction section?  I don't see why it shouldn't be in that section...

While we're at it, maybe the Ingenuity thread should be moved from the events section into the Urban Var or City Discussion threads.

Any particular reason why?  (I'm clueless why, as I assume it deals with an event).

Yeah.  I don't understand why either.

Is there any way to hide some of the animated smileys from the main view...maybe place them under the 'more' link or something?  It's just that some of those animated ones are a bit much to have flashing all the time while you post.  It would also be cool to get some more smiley options, like you find on other forums (but once again, make it so you click the 'more' link to view them).

Yeah.  I don't understand why either.

Yes, it is an event. You are correct.

But it is more then an event. It is (will be) an economic engine for whichever area the festival's permanent home is (from what I hear, this years location is looking to become the permanent home).

I guess I'm coming from the idea that the Event's section is the least looked over area of the forum.

For example, the "urbanohio.com meet up" thread has 173 comments and 3467 views since May 8, 2004.

That is second to the Ingenuity thread which is number one. This thread has only 118 replies but 3635 views, and this was since July 24, 2007.

To compare/contrast, the "Cleveland (CSU): College Town" thread (disclaimer - I started that thread) has 120 replies and has been viewed 2520 since June 13, 2007.

For a clearer illustration of this, click on the following link and look at the events created, the dates posted, and the number of replies/views. Disregard the Urban Ohio Meets.

Furthermore, this would not precedent setting. there are other threads whose placement is questionable:

City Discussion > Topic: 2007 Hessler Street Fair ... Not to Be?

City Discussion > Topic: Events that Draw a Street Crowd in Your City ( I know - I'm pushing it on this one)

Perhaps I feel this way because of my involvement with the festival. I want it to be as successful as possible.

And to do that, it would be nice to have as much input as possible. Forumers can discuss the event itself, or discuss the places, traffic, reactions, suggestions, opinions, weather, speculate on the next year, etc.

Those are my reasons.

I will completely understand if the these are not sufficient.

^With that said, it sounds like it's in a good place.  And on top of that it's giving the Events section some much needed activity.  City Discussion is already bombarded with a potpourri of discussions, and it's actually probably better for this thread to be where it is.  It could potentially get lost amongst the shuffle in City Discussion, but in Events it reigns supreme.

Just some simple thoughts

Good points.

I agree.

Juat because fewer people look at the Events section isn't a good reason to post something in the wrong section.

As for those other threads, they probably just eluded mods' attention and should be moved.

^half the time I don't even know what section I am in because I just click on "recent unread posts".

When I decide where to post, I like to think of how an outsider would try to find things.

What people don't do much, here, is link to other articles.

Say, you could post in the City Discussion forum about how great a town is because of all the cool events and then link to the corresponding events postings in the events section.

This might be automatable (?) but it would probably just lead to more problems as almost everybody n Ohio has a county fair or an oktoberfest.

Agreed.  If anything, we need more people to come to the Events section and be involved with ALL the events, including the Ingenuity festival.

Once again, I agree.

Very good points that I did not consider.

Thanks.

Is there any way that the Electronic Billboards thread be moved to City Discussion instead of Urbanbar.  The issue has become more than the original chatter box that the thread started as.

What do you admins think??

http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=12034.new#new

I decided its more of a transportation issue. Well rather it is a transportation issue since the issue exists because of the FHA and their regulations.

Well done...thanks

could you elaborate, I don't know if i get the gist?

I think you'd find the image bank itself would get real messy, real quick.  The threads are probably the best resource, and the mods and admins already patrol them quite well to keep them (for the most part) on track...I can't imagine someone spending the tremendous amount of time to maintain an abstracted summary of each of them...though I'm sure if you wanted to build a "Project Abstract" post that just used the quote function and pulled the project-advancing posts from some of the bigger projects, nobody would stop you!

None of those renderings are our property. Some people have issue with us even hotlinking, so i certainly doubt we'd be willing to host (read: steal) those images ourselves. (or put ourselves in that position).

Its someone else's work.

I don't see why people get all hot and bothered about this...if it's properly cited and no one is trying to steal the credit than who cares.  Aren't we in our legal right to use those if we properly cite??

Mayday, you reading this? You usually have a well crafted response.......

If we are talking about using photos for a strictly academic purpose (i.e. a presentation for a class), it's generally okay to use them provided they're given proper citation. HOWever, some photographers are a little touchy about any of their images being used for any purpose and it might be a good idea to get permission just to be sure. Whenever I've been contacted by students wanting to use my images, I'm usually more than happy to help - and I usually have more stuff available in my archives but they wouldn't know that unless they asked.

Now as far as renderings of projects - we're usually lucky to even get them; and they're sometimes copied from other media sources. The problem there is that it's possible the designers (or developers) have an exclusive agreement with certain media outlets. We would have to get permission from not only the architect/designer, but the original media outlet as well. Then there are the issues of preventing mis-use. Suppose some NIMBY is opposed to a new project, finds a rendering on our image bank and makes posters and plasters them all over town? 1. We'd never be privy to any renderings again, 2. We'd have some very p!ssed off designers/developers to deal with. And it wouldn't be the forum at large, it would richNcincy and ColDayMan (as proprietors).

I think the idea is good in theory, but given the reality of copyright issues, I just don't think it wouldn't be feasible.

Bingo.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Good points...I'll keep that in mind when posting renderings in the future.  But in all honesty, if they release it to a news source, that distributes it to the public, then they should kind of expect that type of thing.  It's just the day and age we live in...we shouldn't be to blame for that.

Most of the renderings I have posted were acquired at public meetings or have to do with public entities. So I have no problems posting any of this. Sunshine laws.

Well, asking will usually generate a "yes." I've asked for renderings in the past, and most are published on their respective web-sites. Their response is typically, "they are on the web-site, feel free to save them to your hard drive and publish them -- as long as its not for a commercial venture."

problem is, we make money here at UO (Google Adsense, enough to pay the bills). While we don't make money directly off of rendering X, that rendering may have brought a person to our site and then they click on an Adsense.

But usually, UO is not hosting the photos. They are linked to flickr, photobucket, or some personal server.

Doesn't that make a difference?

I have a request.

We are getting close to the 1500 member count (I understand this does not mean there are currently 1500 "active" members).

I think it would be a good time to add a new subject under the General Discussions container.

Urban Ohio Market

It could be our own version of Craig's List without the personals section... or with... whatever.

Right now I have an old Nikon and Minolta with a bunch of lenses I would like to sale, and I would like for the members here to have the first shot at purchasing them.

Thoughts?

I don't foresee a problem with it, but given historical volume of people trying to sell stuff, the random Urbanbar doesn't seem to generate much interest. I know larger message boards who have also tried this, and It never remotely becomes active.

Ebay style - nice!!

Or so I thought there was something we can use.  Can't seem to find it right now.  Will do some more searching later.

I would like to see it put in place. I have a lot of items I'd like to sell, but I hate using eBay.

we of course charge a 82% fee of final sale value for the listing

Changed the main page around a few days ago for anyone who is interested.  It is a very minor change.

Any luck on the market add-on?

Or should I just post in it in the Urban Bar?

I was unable to find one that is an add on for smf.  I'm sure I would be able to find one that is independent and add it to the site.  Would that work?

The minor change looks fine, Rich.

Does anyone ever read the guestbook?

"You guys should really find more pictures of Indianapolis, the ones you have barely show the historical character of the city."

A rating system is available but not one that will automatically lock a thread.

I like the idea of a rating selection for each thread.  Its an additional way to sort each thread.

Changed the main site front page again.  Added some of the forum info via SSI.

I've got another one.

This one I thought of after seeing the link to Urban Ohio on the Avenue District website.

Can someone with appropriate skills create badges of various sizes that can be placed on websites, blogs, etc?

I know I would put one on mine.

tanks

Those look good. So does a person have to host the pic on their own? And what would the script look like to link it back to here?

You can link these ones if you want, I'll leave them online.

Use this code on your site but first remove all the parenthesis:

(<)a href="www.urbanohio.com"(>)(<)img src="http://www.urbanohio.com/badges/uobadge2.jpg"(>)(<)/a(>)
