I only like horror if it's really suspenseful. That's why I like the classic, original Halloween so much.  Even Halloween 2 was good on this level.  But most of it today is just a gross-fest, it's just boring.

I only made it through the first 5 minutes of Saw III before I had to turn it off and swear off that franchise.

The scariest movie i remember seeing was Event Horizon.  More of a sci-fi movie but really just weird and creepy.  I'm not a big fan of the "jump out and shock" type of horror...more of the psychological, creepy, weird, scare the crap out of you kind.

You may like the movie I had mentioned earlier - In the Mouth of Madness.  It also stars Sam Neil and I believe is based on a John Carpenter book.

I might have to check it out.  Maybe when the wife is off doing something else.

"Run Lola Run".

A German suspense/thriller.

Manni and Lola have 20 minutes to find (steal) 100,000 Deutschmarks or they're goners (at least he is). Should be watched in English Language mode. Subtitles take your eyes off any movie.

I included Lola Rennt (german title) in my list as well.  In addition to having a thumping techno soundtrack it has some great German philosophical references and themes... the same way the German language has great words that are not translatable (gemütlich, schadenfreude) there is a word for her scream... where by a female heroine screams and it causes a paradigm shift or epiphany for her or society... really great stuff.  Too bad the word alludes me. :(

You can't go wrong with the Evil Dead trilogy.

The Shining is the best horror movie.  That or The Exorcist.

Exorcist is solid.  I don't think its quite "horror" but I love Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal... Anthony Hopkins is a beast and that character is so intriguing.

Lawrence of Arabia

Teenage mutant ninja turtles

I'm big on Kung-Fu flicks, so my favorite movies are:

Hero (Jet Li's swordplay is STUNNING in this movie)

Enter the Dragon (Bruce Lee's last fully complete film- nuff said)

Shaolin and Wu-Tang (those of you who are fans of hip-hop have surely heard at least one clip of this movie- in at least one Wu-Tang album.  CLASSIC kung-fu flick).

Legend of the Drunken Master (Jackie Chan at his peak- classic final fight sequence)

Some of my other favorites are:

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is my favorite western, hands down.

Forrest Gump (great film)

Pulp Fiction (the soundtrack BY IT'S SELF is great)

Saving Private Ryan

Scarface

--Citizen Kane

--Double Indemnity

--Judgment at Nuremberg

--Mrs. Miniver

--Vertigo

--Rear Window

--Strangers on a Train

--Marty

--The Marriage of Maria Braun

--Scarlet Street

--Nashville

--Cinema Paradiso

--The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

--Night of the Shooting Stars…

Teenage mutant ninja turtles

Thanks for igniting some intentionally repressed memories.

Scarface

I kill a Communist for fun; but for a green card, I gonna carve him up real nice.

You wanna f-k with me?! Oooooh-kaaay.

Taxi Driver

The Usual Suspects

Fight Club

To Kill A Mockingbird

Cache' - probably does not belong, but I just like this movie.

Sleeper: Children of Men - the whole feel and mood and the thought that women mysteriously can no longer become pregnant is haunting and intriguing.  The chaos that follows is surprising yet makes sense, reminiscent of some our own world's issues.

Children of men is a great movie.

--Double Indemnity

One of the best noir films ever made.

Truth.

In the Heat of the Night is also very good, but not noir.

Noir? Murder My Sweet

Fantastic movie.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (The ending is bad and anticlimatic, but otherwise this is the best comedy ever made IMO)

Office Space (Have you seen my stapler?)

The Life of Brian, although that's a tough call vs. Holy Grail

Chinatown captured the feel of Los Angeles when it was compelling

Office Space

The Right Stuff

The Last Emporer

The Untouchables, for that Enio Morricone theme music.  Where's Frank Nitti?  He's in the car.

All Quiet on the Western Front--our teachers assigned it, and I am grateful

Midway--can't turn it off

The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis--when our country was born

NOT! Forest Gump--I wish I had those 90 minutes back.  I fell asleep watching Red October.  Dances with Wolves put me to sleep, but when I watch it on TV, it has more meaning to me.

The number one movie of all time is...Avatar!

I (used to) speak German. I took many German classes in college, so much so that I was like 1-2 classes away from a German minor. But I do not know of this word. I did not have any luck googling it either.

I keep thinking "Schrei" or some variation of it. But that's just your basic, ordinary "scream"... auf deutsch.

But, yes, Lola's scream would fit the definition that you've described.

^^Good call on Last of the Mohicans.

But no love for Forrest Gump and Hunt for Red October???

Lawrence of Arabia

WORD, O'Toole should have gotten the Oscar.

The Game with Michael Douglas is one of my personal favorites.

The Game was great, a total mind fuck.  He was awesome in Wall Street, Jewel of the Nile and Romancing the Stone as well... the last two are chick flicky but I like the adventure aspect.

Personal favorites:

American Beauty

Run Lola Run

Last Picture Show

Arsenic and Old Lace

Citizen Kane

There Will Be Blood

Unforgiven

The Coen Brothers first movie:

Blood Simple

The Stranger is good.

So is The Battle of Algiers.

whats better than a best movie?

hows about three in one?

huh? yep.

ps -- warning dont watch if you are prone to epilepsy!!!

^ This an excerpt from a recent project that fuses Planet of the Apes, Omega Man, and Soylent Green. The 3 films (in their entirety) are visually alternated with each other every 1/10 of a second, while the soundtracks are layered simultaneously. Originally screened as part of SOuthern Exposure's Bellwether Exhibition, and more recently presented in my solo show at Catharine Clark Gallery (www.cclarkgallery.com).

The thing about great art is that it teaches us things about ourselves.  For example, I learned very quickly from this piece that I see little use in trying to watch 3 movies visually alternated with each other every 1/10th of a second.

Flight Of The Navigator

^While it get points for a young Sarah Jessica Parker with purple streaks, please tell me you are kidding...

Not really kidding but I guess different people have different tastes.

It'll be 110% better than the planned remake, I can guarantee you that.

Alright if you want to name-drop stuff like Flight of the Navigator, you better include The Goonies.

Jeez, all these movies I've never even seen are mentioned. You all make me want to go to Blockbuster right now.

^^^ Yeah, I already picked up one that I saw listed here from the library- "All Quiet on the Western Front" (good call, Boreas).  I didn't expect a 1930 movie to be able to portray action so intensely.

Has anyone mentioned movies by Alfred Hitchcock?  They are almost all great (I'm not a big fan of the Birds though).

Rear Window is great.

North by Northwest is another good one.  I love Cary Grant.

Two other great Cary Grant/Alfred Hitchcock movies: North by Northwest and Notorious.

On an unrelated note, I love "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."  Jonathon Winters was hilarious (and from the well known Winters Bank family of Dayton).

Some of my other favorites are:

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is my favorite western, hands down.

yeah, baby, Sergio Leone!  That was a great film.  Deserts, music, villans,...

Blondie: "Angel Eyes is in town"

Tuco: "I'll get my gun, I'll kill him, I'll be right back"

Taxi Driver

Any movie that inspires someone to shoot Ronald Reagan is a movie that I gotta see!

Has anyone mentioned movies by Alfred Hitchcock?  They are almost all great (I'm not a big fan of the Birds though).

Rear Window is great.

uh, I had Rear Window, along with Vertigo and Strangers on a Train on my list of March 10. I can see nobody ever pays any attention to my posts

Con Air: Best movie ever made.

It's ok. Scrabble also posted the same movie I did right after my post, and David posted one of his movies twice. :-P

I noticed that, although I had to look up Con Air as I don't remember the movie, much less had seen it (in spite of its "all star" cast ). But the double post must be an indication of its cinematic/artistic superiority
