Adios, putito!

Has anyone mentioned movies by Alfred Hitchcock? They are almost all great (I'm not a big fan of the Birds though).

Rear Window is great.

uh, I had Rear Window, along with Vertigo and Strangers on a Train on my list of March 10. I can see nobody ever pays any attention to my posts

It's ok. Scrabble also posted the same movie I did right after my post, and David posted one of his movies twice. :-P

That's why I prefaced it with "Has anyone mentioned..."

March 10th was five whole days ago.  That would have meant I had to go back at least one or two pages back in this thread to check.

Plus, this thread is bound to include repeats.

Oh, and Fried Green Tomatoes!

Well now, if we're adding overly saccharine chick flicks to this list, then you have to add Boys On the Side. Yes, I've seen this...in the theater. Don't ask why, I still haven't figured out what transpired.

Nevertheless, if you didn't cry at the end when Whoopi is singing " I can't help falling in love with you" to a dying Mary Louise Parker....well, then you probably left halfway through the movie like I wanted to do.

Hey that was good too!

And you should all watch Scent of a Woman. My friends think I'm gay because my favorite movie is called "Scent of a Woman" but it's not even a chick flick at all.

Capricorn One

OJ and Telly Savalas at their finest!

That movie only got a 6.6/10 on IMDB.net

So did Con Air.

Con Air was a joke!

Everyone here knows I hate that @sshole Nicolas Cage.

I didn't know that.  But I'm glad you do.  Everybody should.

Isn't he obnoxious? He's so dull and uncharismatic. Who does he think he is? I saw "Knowing" and it was the dumbest movie ever. I thought it would be all intellectual like "A beautiful mind" but it transpires that all he did was look at a list of numbers and draw a line between each set while he was wasted on Jack Daniels, then gott on google to find out that these oh-so-cryptic numbers represent dates.

Then he finds out that aliens (so realistic!) are behind some plot to destroy the earth and start human life anew on another plant. Lame. Sorry, I can't take action/suspense movies seriously when they're ultimately just...about aliens.

I think that all the UO conspiracy buffs will enjoy Capricorn One!

Pretty much every Nicholas Cage movie comes out that way.  Besides the terrible plots, I really can't stand his expressions.  Almost as bad as Keanu Reeves.

If you want a classic 'so bad, its good' movie, check out Cage's ridiculous overacting in the Wicker Man

Nicholas Cage is the bane of my existence.

I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I love you guys <3

Woah woah, wait a minute.  It's not Nicholas Cage anymore.  It's Nick Cage now. Or at least that's what everyone is calling him now.

Nevertheless, if you didn't cry at the end when Whoopi is singing " I can't help falling in love with you" to a dying Mary Louise Parker....well, then you probably left halfway through the movie like I wanted to do.

Killer joke!

Thats what they call him now?  Last I heard he was called, "broke".

Watch the Christopher Lee version first, please.

Watched UP! last night...that was a great movie. One of my favorites of recent years.

Coming to America- Eddie Murphy.  One of the greatest comedies of all.

Meh, I can take him or leave him, although I found Adaptation oddly disturbing.

I can't believe none of you give him a pass for Raising Arizona, though. Come on, that movie is the Coen brothers at their best.

Holly Hunter's overacting was painful to watch in Raising Arizona.

A friend of my brother helped finance that movie.

Black Orpheus is my favorite movie.  It was made in 1959, but looks as though it could have been filmed yesterday, it is so timeless.  The two stars died only last year....the beautiful Marpressa Dawn (born in Pittsburgh, but raised in Dayton) and Breno Mello, as the melancholy Orpheus.

I'm a big fan of 1940s and 1950s movies, especially early Sci-fi.  Not that they are the best ever made, but certainly entertaining in their naivete.

Soylent Green is one of my favs.

he he...I've actually never seen it, but I've been known to spontaneously declare "Soylent Green is people! It's....people!!!! "

that, or 'get your hands off me, you damn, dirty apes'

Man, they don't make them like Charlton Heston anymore.

Soylent Green is one of my favs.

Soylent Green was based on the book in my sig line.  We need a thread on favorite authors: Harry Harrison is up there for me.

for musicals i like west side story....the zombie version

The Outlaw Josey Wales

Law Abiding Citizen!

^ I was surprised how much I liked Law Abiding Citizen.  Great suspense film.  As a parent and husband though, the first scene is very hard to watch.

I could probably rattle off 100 of my favorite films, so here's a small list off the top of my head:

MICHAEL CLAYTON - Beautifully shot, genuinely suspenful, superb acting.  Clooney's best role to date. One of the best corporate thrillers ever made.

GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS - Some of the best dialogue in cinema, one of the best casts in cinema.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION - Ushered a new era of film, super gritty, excellent cinematography and direction.

BLADE RUNNER - Speaks for itself. Greatest sci-fi film ever made.

THE INSIDER - Crowe's best, Mann's best. Personally, this film has been very influential in my own writing.

THE HORSE'S MOUTH - Great dialogue; quick and witty. Guinness' best role. Completely charming and ultimately heart breaking.

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD - One of Lumet's best. Brutal, beautiful.

WALL-E - A new benchmark for animated films. Beautiful.

AMORES PERROS - Brilliant in every way.

CITY OF GOD - One of the best shot films I've ever seen.

SYNECHODOCHE, NEW YORK - Brilliantly acted and filmed. Challanging.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - A masterpiece.

DOG DAY AFTERNOON - Lumet's best. Pacino's best.

I STAND ALONE - The absolute most brutal and disturbing film I've ever seen. Brilliant.

THE PROPOSITION - One of the best examples of an excellent story, cast, director, cinematographer and composer all coming together to make a near perfect film.

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS - Excellent. Love the boozy swagger of the music and the completely amoral characters. Burt Lancastor is genuinely intimidating.

I might do some more later.

Bull Durham.

Bull Durham.

Bah. Let me tell you something, every time I tell people I hate Kevin Costner, I get "well, he was good in Bull Durham".

No, he wasn't. He played the same shlock that he plays in every movie. "Oh I'm trying to play a hard case on the outside, but I'm really sensitive on the inside...except I'm not good enough of an actor to play the hard case, so I just come across as wishy washy in everything I do"

^Agreed.

actors that don't act?  Harrison Ford is the king of it.

AJ isn't that a better post for the Pet Peeve thread? :)

BTW Costner was stunning in the Big Chill. Dynamic acting that he never matched.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085244/trivia see fact two.

Overall I am not a huge Costner fan for the reasons listed above but he doesn't bother me too much in Bull Durham because of the interplay between him and Tim Robbins. Also his schtick is well suited to baseball movies for whatever reasons. Field of Dreams was good too but maybe that was because he wasn't suppose to be a tough guy and I also like seeing Boomers having to eat crow. However I never bothered to see "For the love of the game".

Bull Durham it's all about Ebbie "Nuke' LaRoosh, garter belts and breathing through your eyelids. Although when i watched it this last weekend I thought Susan Sarandon even looked old in that, which I guess is a testament to her Plastic surgeon keeping her stuck (and possibly better than) in 1988. She was a cutie in Rocky Horror Picture Show though.

LOL...took me a minute to figure out what the heck you were talking about! I'll give you that one. Fine work there.

You know i knew he played the corpse but I never realized that he filmed flashback scenes that were cut from the final film until I just read it in IMDB. Must have been some really fine acting....

He played the wrist, because that was about all that was shown of the corpse.  Great movie BTW though.... an even better soundtrack.

Costner's acting abilities also shine through in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves... well, that is during the bits of a few scenes that he is actually able to maintain a British accent.

the recent Hamlet

A Man for All Seasons

Becket

The Great Escape

Papillon

All about Eve!  That movie is fierce!

I liked Costner in The Untouchables.  I could really relate to the drama of criminals run amok in a Midwestern city twenty five years before I was born.

'cause I'm from Niles.

Finally got a chance to see Avatar and am adding it to my list.  While I did not see it in 3-D, the plasma/blu-ray/surround sound combo definitely is jaw-dropping with this movie.  I bought a copy the day after I rented it.  Not a bad deal for under $30 considering it came with a regular DVD copy that I can give to someone less technologically sophisticated than my man-cave...

Avatar was good but the plot was just a modernized version of Pocahontas.

Has someone posted the Pocahontas mash-up yet? There really are no original stories.

The whole nerve plug thing was pretty original though. I liked that.

I was enthralled by the sci-fi whimsy of counter-culture star Kurt Vonnegut, and it was pure delight for us late-baby-boomers when the film version made its occasional appearance at the Wedgewood Cinema in Austintown.  Another antiwar film listed by Boreas.  Slaughterhouse_Five-719122.jpg
