I know there have probably been a million threads on this...but wanted to see if someone good give reviews on the various downtown apartment buildings.

I viewed a view on E4th and 668 Euclid.  Didn't know if there were any other places worth checking out (Osbourne Bldg?).

I need a 1 bdrm under $1000 / mo.

Thanks.

with a $1,000 budget you pretty much can have your pick...

what are you looking for? i.e. type of area you want to be in; about how old are you; will you be working downtown, if so, where approximately, etc.

I would also check out the Bingham and possibly the Bridgeview.

Realistically, I'd like to be in the $750-$800 / mo range.

I want to be downtown...go to a lot of Cavs / Indians games so obviously 4th Street appealed to me.

I will be traveling for work and working from home...so being near work is not an issue.  I'm a 28 yr old single male...if that has any relevance...haha.

If you're flying a lot, then being closer to Tower City Center and the Rapid line to the airport might be something for you. If so, East 4th and the Warehouse District are options to consider.

Check out Huron Square and the Osborne. Both are very close the The Q and Progressive Field. Also look at 425 Lakeside in the Warehouse Dist. I would stay away from Reserve Square, the Chesterfield and National Terminal Warehouse. Good luck with your search.

I was actually surprised when I was looking last year for a one-bedroom how much prices had climbed downtown. I was being shown places for $900, $1,100, $1,400 ... crazy! But obviously a very good sign of the health of the market. There are some great places on East 4th in that range. If you're willing to live a little further east, your money may stretch further. I was blown away by Walker & Weeks (which given the dorms going up across the street is not going to feel so lonely), and Tower Press has done some beautiful warehouse loft conversions. Both come in under your price ceiling, and you'll have a big space with high ceilings and nice finishes.

And 900 x 12 = over ten grand + parking.  This is way too much for entry level people in a number of common downtown professions, many of whom are working with 25k-35k total and may have sizeable student loan payments.  To anyone for whom this doesn't apply, God Bless.  Crittenden was a good start but I'm still hoping we can develop more... cheapies... going forward.  I think it's an entirely different market than what's currently available, so I don't think this kind of growth would negatively impact existing high-end properties.

Though there are certainly higher priced places, I think the vast majority of downtown 1 br's are in the $750-$850 range.

I lived in the osborn for 6 years and loved it.  I think what I liked best about this area is that it's right next to all the things you want to do, but not "on" it.  This way you don't have to listen to "wwwhhhheeeeeooooooooo!!!" at 2:30 in the morning for 45 straight minutes if you choose to not go out.  Both the osborn and huron square were in that first real wave of downtown housing, so you end up with cool spaces but pretty basic finishes.  And for what it's worth I think units are way better in the osborn than huron square.

there is also Prospect Place across the street.  Those places are pretty pricey, but they are unbelievable.  I'd go check this place out just to see the units if nothing else.

regarding pricing downtown.  That's the nature of the beast.  There are places to live in and around downtown for people just starting out, they just aren't going to be the coolest places in the coolest areas.  It's like that in every city in the world.

Thanks for the helpful advice.

I am looking at the Euclid Block apartments tomorrow...does anyone know anything specific about this building?

Thanks.

I would check out Walker Weeks too. They are located on Prospect but they are not exactly "downtown" downtown. They are across from Cleveland State. I have friend who live over there and they love it. The one bedroom price might be right up your alley!

Are you looking to stay closer to East 4th/East 9th area?

Oh, and one of my friend's mom is moving into 668 next month! I could probably talk to her to see if she can get you a special on rent because she has sent a lot of her work friends & various doctors/people there and from what I know they got a good deal too. The apartments there are really nice and decent sized, I especially liked the double-paned windows. It's nice to be downtown and have a quiet room. Haha.

  • 2 weeks later...

A lot of folks are moving to Cleveland.  Great!  Welcome to my kingdom.  :D

Is walker & weeks a rental property now?  I remember looking at that place 2-3 yrs ago when it was condos and empty.  They had some really nice condos - the only reason I didn't buy there is because they hadn't sold any.

Has anyone heard anything about Tremont Place Lofts? The units seem nice, though a little on the expensive side.

Welcome,

IIRC, Walker and Weeks has always been an apartment building.

If you do a search here you'll find a thread on Tremont place.

Walker and Weeks were condos initially, but they were not moving at all. I think just two of the units sold. They've had tremendous luck with apartment rentals, though, with a ton of CSU students picking them up ... even the largest loft suites, which are gorgeous, are pretty affordable when split 2-3 ways, which many of the students do.

IIRC, there are only 4 one-bedrooms in the entire complex, so those move EXTREMELY fast (I saw one last summer and tried to lease it about 18 hours later, and it was already gone. Beautiful building, nice natural light, awesome history (headquarters to the architects who built most of the historic buildings downtown and some in University Circle) but a little removed from traditional neighborhood amenities.

I'm sure this will change, though, as the Student Life Center comes back to life and the 380 new dorm units going up across the street, all of which is slated to open this summer. I will say that I was warned that Walker & Weeks can get a little noisy from the student population, but that this is less pronounced on the Prospect side of the building. There has also been some talk of CSU purchasing this building and officially making it a dorm ... and what a dorm it would be!!!

Really?  I dont remember that.  Oh well....there goes the memory. :|

I'm glad CSU is expanding its dorm stock, but I really hope they don't buy out all the apt buildings in the area as I think that a college neighborhood benefits by having housing that is open to non-students as well.

i don't think anything in the collegetown footprint is slated to be CSU run or owned...

I don't think they are but with CSU, anything is possible, especially since they are trying to get more students to live on campus. As of right now, once they get the new dorms built, they are supposed to tear down Viking Hall and build another set of dorms. But if they keep trying to buy out apartment buildings, they are going to push other potential residents out of downtown.
