Wow, what a mixed bag...in a good way.  If you showed me 10 of those pics and asked me what city it was I'd probably give you 10 different answers.

Gorgeous city.

Bravo!   I never knew!

At first my instinct was Richmond, Indiana (right next to Ohio), with an outside chance of Virginia.  Looking at the pics I'm now guessing Virginia because of the following:

1.  VCU, or VIRGINIA Commonwealth University

2.  a Hess gas station (there are none of those in Indiana)

3.  an Exxon station (not in Richmond, IN; the closest ones are on I-74 west of the Ohio state line)

4.  a US 1/US 301 sign (those routes do not run in Indiana)

5.  a sign with a phone number having an 804 area code (804 is for Richmond, VA)

6.  some white license plates with letters having serifs (characteristic of Virginia plates)

7.  if you look hard enough in one of the pictures of a big building, you see the word VIRGINIA in the bottom left of the pic

8.  part of the Virginia state (or is it commonwealth?) flag

Wonderful thread, by the way!  I was there last year!  Unfortunately it rained that day.

My sister-in-law lives at the far western edge of the Fan. Great neighborhood. Cary Street is a lot of fun to stroll along. Monument is a little creepy as a northerner.

Whoa! And I'm guessing "fabulous" is code for "the gays have taken over! Run for your life!!!"

Fantastic.

And as far as something not to like, there is the penultimate photo.

These pictures are beautiful!

Don't see Richmond on here too often... thanks for sharing!  Why is it called The Fan District?

I'd also add that big white apartment building toward the top of the list is actually a really nasty roach and rat invested apartment building that has gotten condemned a couple times.

I think the name comes from the shape as it spreads out from downtown Richmond. The West End of Richmond near UofR is really pretty too, but there is a lot of not so nice areas to put it mildly.

Great looking neighborhood!

I never knew Richmond has this much!

Interesting mix of architecture.  You can see the city develop over time.  Good preservation.

Amazing.  A surprise to me; although I had heard of the district, had no idea it was that attractive.

I was curious too and a friend from Richmond told me that after the Civil War and the city was burned and greatly destroyed.  Development in the boom years from say the 1870's to the 1920's grew the city to the north and west in a great fan shape from downtown.

Damn!

very good -- lots of beautiful housing stock in those neighborhoods!

ive only breezed thru richmond and as i recall and someone mentioned it has plenty of not very nice looking areas too.
