Nice that you can see the outline of its footprint now.

This thing is going to be a sight!  Very excited..

What capabilities do they have for expanding beyond their footprint within which they're building now?

Looks like none

As I unerstand it, MOCA doesn't have much of a permanent collection.  It is used more for traveling shows and temporary exhibitions.  The structure is being built to adequately handle the demand, I'm sure.

Thats right, they are pretty much strictly an exhibitions space, although Im kinda surprised they would limit themselves as such with people like Toby Lewis and important collectors such as Peter Lewis and Progressive in the area (well sort of).  Especially given that Peter has put up so much funding for other contempory art museums, it seems like it should have been a natural fit here.

I think it's perfect size...

If they had permanent collections, I would argue otherwise.

Now I understand. I didn't realize they lacked a permanent collection.

Huge cranes on site this morning and a ton of steel beams.

The first one will be going up at 1:30 today if anyone can get down here and take pictures.

OK, I have a few quick pics:

First, form earlier today when I say the cranes:

And then, the FIRST steel beams into the air:

Excuse my expletive deleted language, but I'm pretty f-ing excited to see this area when it's all said and done!

Another beam is up this morning!  Keep'em coming...

^But it doesn't show much of Uptown- so don't think you're off the hook completely! ;)  Seriously though, I have very, very much appreciated all your UC-area photo updates.

Drove by today.  Those framing beams are HUGE.  This project is going to be taller than I had anticipated.

I was down there this weekend.  Very interesting to see this building take shape, based on the angles of the structural steel...

^^ Agreed. I think that because the renderings tried to contextualize the building from a little further away, it looked smaller than it's actually going to be. It's a LOT bigger than I anticipated.

This may eliminate our need for picture updates...

Wow, from the web cam, the outer shape of the thing is already very discernible from the steel framing.

This project is cooking.  I bike by it every day.  If everything was built this fast, the projects in this city would all be done by 2013.  It seems as if the uptown apartments cant keep up with it...and they got a head start!!

Just for fun I "connected the dots" and used some of the diagrams to put together how this will look (vaguely).  This is MUCH bigger than I expected, will have quite the presence, especially with the shiny black exterior.

While I can appreciate its uniqueness and I suppose a necessary eccentric quality, I still think that design is just ugly.

I'm just happy it's not beige or brick.  Should be interesting to compare it's daytime presence to its nighttime, lit-up presence.  I'm pretty excited.

Wow!!! They are really moving along. Thanks for the update.

They have to get it under roof before the snow flies in August.... storm.gif

They always go up fast. And then after they are sealed up people on the board start asking if the project has been abandoned or delayed because they can't see work being done. ;)

Quick shot from last week ...

^ Additional UPDATE: they is now a metal roof being installed.

They must have hired the same construction company that Taco Bell hires, it only takes them a week to build anything. They'd already have Med mart and flats east project done and open.

As a general thought, this building always seems too small to me.  You figure almost one whole floor will be devoted

to admin. office, storage, art prep, etc., that only leaves three floors.  And there really is no

opportunity for expansion.

But I'm not the one running MOCA or know of their true space needs.  So who am I to judge.

This looks way bigger than the space they're in now. If anything this is an expansion.

I think someone previously mentioned that they don't have their own permanent collection, thus they don't need as much space.

The first shot Murray Hill took actually makes the building look much larger then the shots taken from the NW corner of Ford and Euclid.  I think the strange dimensions of this building make it look small from certain angles.  Great Pictures!

^Agreed.  It looks like a pentagon in some angles, and an octagon in others.

wow its going up quick now -- looks like it will be fine for everybody except richard serra.

can we get some updated shots on this thread? i was wondering if any of the black 'dethstar' cladding was up yet? if and when i would like to see a panel that up close if possible. thx!

I'd be interested to know how MOCA's reacting to the Bidwell/CMA partnership around contemporary art in Ohio City ... There didn't seem to be much of a weigh-in from MOCA in Litt's recent article. I'm pleased as punch that CMA is getting serious about contemporary art, and I'm hopeful that there's enough appetite for contemporary that both buildings will do quite well, but it could be an interesting wrinkle.

^Yeah, I wondered the same thing when I saw David Franklin's quote in the PD coverage (http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/09/cleveland_museum_of_art_and_bi.html):

“I want the Cleveland Museum of Art to be the glue for the contemporary scene in Cleveland, which feels ready to burst,” he said.

Still, the new MOCA building is going to be much larger and more visible and will benefit from its proximity to the other museums, IMHO, so I doubt they feel very threatened in terms of visitor counts.  They might feel slighted by all the money the CMA is getting for contemporary programming though.
