Posted March 21, 201015 yr Hello- I am single professional woman in my early 30s soon moving to Cleveland. I enjoy running and biking outdoors ( even if it is dark and cold). I have heard that downtown is not safe for this? I really like some of the apartments downtown.. but safety is my primary concern. Any ideas or suggestions of places for me to live?
March 21, 201015 yr I think safety is subjective- at least the perception of safety which is what I think you're asking about. I have known many women who live or have lived Downtown and found it to be perfectly acceptable safety wise. I also know that some women (and of course, some men) don't. I wish it was easier to give a simple yes/no answer. My best advice would be for you to spend a bit of time Downtown to see how you feel, but that may not be possible if you're moving from far away. The safest parts of Downtown tend to be the most active- East 4th and Euclid or Prospect from about Ontario to E. 9th or the Warehouse District. What kind of neighborhood are you used to living in?
March 21, 201015 yr As X said, it's subjective. I am one of the women on the forum and before I had my baby, I was a runner. I wouldn't run downtown in the dark. I have run all over downtown during the daytimes hours, and I see some people out running early morning, but you just don't see it much after dark, male or female. There are places where it's pretty isolated downtown when you're a runner, and you start to get that feeling like hey, maybe I shouldn't be running here, but I've never encoutered anything other than a few wolf whistles. And no, I don't run in anything remotely attractive. JMO.
March 21, 201015 yr Safe to live downtown? Absolutely. Safe to run downtown at night? I would vote yes. Downtown itself offers extra safety forces and a growing professional population. This makes it one of the safest neighborhoods in the city, IMO, safer than some of our suburbs even. However there are areas near downtown, primarily to the east, where I would not recommend running at night. I see these as two very different situations, though that may not be the case for others you've spoken with. I've found that people from outside the city tend to think "downtown" goes out 50-100 blocks in either direction, which it doesn't.
March 21, 201015 yr I knew someone who used to ride her bicycle a couple of miles from downtown to Edgewater Park, do some running from the parking lot east end of the park out west to Cliff Drive and back, then ride her bike back to downtown. She did it in less than an hour at dawn when the air is best and there's few "street urchins" out there. This was before Wendy Park was finished, and I doubt she had time or the stamina for including that in her run. But if you do, you can always do a round-trip from Wendy Park to Cliff Drive. March 22, 201015 yr My opinion is that safety in Downtown is not a serious enough of a concern to be a deciding factor. There really is only one very specific part of downtown that I would consider "seedy" and it is on the fringes. What I would strongly consider is whether downtown is the best place for you considering what you like to do. Downtown is not exactly known for its outdoor activities other than eating/drinking and entertainment. Not that Downtown doesn't have its options to run/bike, but I just think other neighborhoods would be more enjoyable for someone asking about biking/jogging, as opposed to nightlife.

I believe it is safe to live downtown because as a 23 yr old female, I live downtown! My best friend and I ride bikes late at night as well as go for walks at all times at night. The city has done a lot to make sure downtown is well lit, especially on Euclid, which is where I always begin my bike rides (and usually end up in University Circle) on my late night rides. It's nice going down Euclid now that there is a bike lane so you can enjoy the city lights while enjoying your ride. What apartments have you checked out so far?
March 22, 201015 yr I see a good number of women running over the Bridge into Ohio City after work. I also see some women running in the Flats between 6:30am and 8am during the week days.
March 22, 201015 yr 26 yo female downtown resident here..... I have no qualms about running downtown.... especially given that you're running with minimal items on your person and not just sauntering along with a big ol' Coach bag advertising to be robbed! But seriously, few random crimes (i.e. you don't know the assailant) happen in downtown Cleveland compared to what some scared surbabanites might say. I, as a rule of thumb, stay on major roads with car/pedestrian traffic because I feel more comfortable that way, but I really don't even think that's actually even necessary.
March 23, 201015 yr Hi all- Thanks for the suggestions thus far. kayteeohh and the other young women who live downtown.. which apartment complexes do you live in? I am looking at Bridgeview, Bingham. Residences at 668, Reserve Square, and University Lofts. Any info you have about these places or other suggestions for nice downtown apartments would be great.

Are you looking for a condo or apartment? One of my closest friend's mom is moving into 668 and she LOVES it there. She has been referring people there for the past few months because they are in a nice location, right in the heart of downtown, and they have double-paned windows to help keep the sound out. Some units also have a patio (which is the one she is moving into next month). She used to live in Huron Square, so you could check those out. They were very quaint and cozy in my opinion. But I would def. suggest either 668 or Huron Square if you are trying to stay towards the east and Bridgeview if you want to be near West 6th. I don't know much about the University Lofts due to the fact that they were recently built, but what I can tell you is they are right next to the bus routes, CSU, and the highway. I hope that helps :)
March 23, 201015 yr Hello- I am coming from CA ( a very safe area not in a city). I have never really lived downtown in a major city besides Indy... Where are you looking to move to and what are you looking for place wise? There are many places to check out downtown: Reserve Square, The Chesterfield, Walker Weeks, Euclid Lofts, Statler Arms, The Bingham, University Lofts, Huron Square, 668, etc.

While I am not a young woman, I do live with a young woman (24) who likes to run and she enjoys running downtown and over the Detroit-Superior Bridge. She doesn't run after dark, but she's never felt comfortable running after dark anywhere (except maybe in college with a group). We live in the Crittenden, which is right across St. Clair from the Bridgeview. The Warehouse District is a very nice, very safe area, and I would highly recommend it. The area around E4th is also very safe. The only areas downtown that I really try to avoid are East of Reserve Square, but other than that we feel very safe downtown. Good luck on your move!

I am interested in a 1BR apartment with amenities like washer/dryer in unit and garage available. I'd like to be in a location near other young professional people near nightlife/entertainment/restaurants, etc. Thanks for all the suggestions..
March 24, 201015 yr Hi- I am looking either downtown, Tremont, or Cleveland Heights. I am interested in a 1BR apartment with amenities like washer/dryer in unit and garage available. I'd like to be in a location near other young professional people near nightlife/entertainment/restaurants, etc. Thanks for all the suggestions.. I don't know what your price range is but if you are looking into downtown, then I would check out: 668, Walker Weeks, The Euclid Lofts, and Statler Arms. Places like The Chesterfield and Reserve Square do not have a washer/dryer unit in your room but do have washers & dryers in the buildings. As for Cleveland Hts & Tremont, I am familiar with them, but I cannot give you too much advice on places of living. My best friend & I are actually thinking of moving to Tremont this summer. I hope that helps :) Try: http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/apartments_for_rent/tremont_ohio/ Or: http://realestate.yahoo.com/search/Ohio/Cleveland/Tremont/apartments-for-rent
March 24, 201015 yr Recently, a similar discussion thread was initiated by a woman in her 20s who was moving into Cleveland. She chose Tremont, but there are a lot of similarly good suggestions made by other UO forumers: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22112.0.html There was another recent thread initiated by another young woman who was moving here from DC and who was inquiring specifically about Downtown: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22039.0/all.html If you decide to look at Tremont and need some specific questions answered, feel free to PM me. Good luck!
