Ferry route could ease trip across state line

By Brenna R. Kelly and Marla Matzer Rose

Enquirer staff writers

A proposed Ohio River ferry could bring more Indiana residents to Northern Kentucky shopping destinations and more Kentuckians to Rising Sun's riverboat casino.

The year-round ferry would run from Ky. 18 in Boone County near McVille to a landing about a mile north of the Grand Victoria Casino.

The boat would be able to hold about 10 to 12 cars, tour buses and even a tractor-trailer. Fares have not been set.

Zone change sought out for a ferry

Boone asked to OK landing

BY BRENNA R. KELLY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

BURLINGTON - The group that wants to start a ferry between Rising Sun and Boone County has asked the county for a change in zoning to allow the ferry.

Rising Sun officials say the Ohio River ferry would make it easier for the Indiana city's 2,400 residents to get to Northern Kentucky - cutting a half hour off the drive. It would also make it easier for Northern Kentucky residents to get to Rising Sun's Grand Victoria Casino & Resort, which is a mile south of the landing.

On the Boone County side, the landing would be on 4 acres on McVille Road owned by Robert and Lois Pikar of Fort Thomas. There would also be a parking lot and a boat dock off the road.

I love ferries and all, but they seem to be a thing of the past.  There are only a few successful ferries left around here anymore:  Anderson Ferry (delhi's only resonable means of connection to the outside world) and those that shuttle people back and forth for riverfront events (reds games, festivals, etc.)

The ferry between Ohio 800 and Sistersville WV (between New Martinsville & Marietta), is one of my favorites. It's small and unpretentious but it provides a short, enjoyable ride with good scenery. It's well-utilized, and everyone seems to know everyone else.

Forum to discuss Belleview ferry

BY PAUL MCKIBBEN | COMMUNITY RECORDER STAFF WRITER

BELLEVIEW -- To help educate the public about a proposed ferry from Rising Sun, Ind., to Boone County, the project's proponents will host a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Kelly Elementary School in Belleview.

"We understand that the residents of that area have some concerns and we'd like to be able to basically present what the (Rising Sun/Ohio County) Port Authority intends on doing," said Jim Carmichael, a real estate agent with First Commercial Realty in Florence who is working on the project.

Ferry fears

Residents worry project won't help the county

By Luke E. Saladin

A plan to open a ferry between Rising Sun, Ind., and Belleview, Ky., is drawing opposition from local residents who fear traffic generated by the operation would tax rural roads in western Boone County.

The proposal calls for a public boat ramp and about eight parking spots at the ferry's docking point in Kentucky on property located on McVille Road - Ky. 18 - in Belleview, near Waterloo Road. The ferry would be able to carry eight vehicles at a time.

Proposed ferry gets mixed reactions

By Luke E. Saladin

Post staff reporter

A proposal to run a ferry between Boone County and Rising Sun got mixed reviews at a public hearing Wednesday.

The Rising Sun/Ohio County Port Authority is pushing for a zone change on a 4.2-acre lot in Belleview that would be developed as the dock and parking lot for the ferry, which would run between the Boone County hamlet and Rising Sun, Ind.

At the hearing before the Boone County Planning Commission, supporters of the venture reiterated their stance that the plan was not designed to increase business at Grand Victoria Casino & Spa, Rising Sun's signature business.

Boone planners to review ferry proposal

By Luke E. Saladin

Post staff reporter

Now that the public has had a chance to speak, Boone County officials this week will begin deciding if a proposed Ohio River ferry from Belleview to Rising Sun, Ind., is a good idea.

The Boone County Planning Commission Review Committee will make a recommendation on the plan Wednesday, followed by the full planning commission May 17. Although proponents and opponents of the ferry plan to attend the two meetings, neither meeting will include an opportunity for them to speak because a public hearing was in March.

Planning commission frowns on ferry

BY BRENNA R. KELLY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Plans for an Ohio River ferry might be sunk.

A committee of the Boone County Planning Commission on Wednesday unanimously rejected a zone change and permit needed for the ferry, which would run between Rising Sun, Ind., and McVille Road.

"The entire committee felt that there had been not one of our conditions met for a zone change," Commissioner Lisa Wilson said.
